The Stingy Suitor

My university diploma was still warm in my hand when my grandfather's call came through: "Lydia, the young master of the Gresham Family is waiting at the café. Go now." I gripped that thin piece of paper as if I were holding onto a destiny already arranged for me. I pushed open the café door, and the man in the gray suit looked up, his eyes appraising me like a product: "You're Lydia Sue, right? Next week, you'll go to City H with me to build our relationship." Before I could even nod, he was already standing. What I didn't know was that those two huge suitcases were packed full of ridiculous secrets that would completely change this trip.收起

Chapter 1 of "The Stingy Suitor"

Right after my university graduation ceremony ended, I was still clutching my gilded diploma when my grandfather called. He said he had already arranged for me to meet Luke Gresham and told me to head to a café downtown right away. I sighed. Grandfather had always been worried about my future, saying Luke Gresham is the heir of Gresham Group, with a solid family background. I packed up and took a cab to the café. Pushing open the door, I immediately spotted Luke Gresham sitting by the window. He wore a gray suit, his hair perfectly neat, with an untouched cup of coffee in front of him. I walked over and sat down. He glanced up at me and said calmly, "You're Lydia Sue, right? I'm Luke Gresham." I nodded, called the waiter over, and ordered a latte. Luke got straight to the point: "My grandfather and your grandfather have known each other for years. This meeting is to finalize our marriage arrangement." I was momentarily stunned—I hadn't expected him to be so straightforward. He went on, "I'm planning a trip to City H next week. If you don't mind, we could go together and get to know each other a little." I hesitated for a moment, but since Grandfather really wants us to get along, I nodded and agreed. When I was packing at home, I purposely brought a few pretty dresses, planning to take some nice photos in City H. On the day we left, I ran into Luke Gresham at the airport. He had two huge suitcases by his side, looking really heavy. Curious, I asked him, "You brought so much stuff. What exactly is all this?" Luke patted the suitcases proudly and said, "These are all potatoes—some raw, some cooked." I was so surprised my mouth fell open: "Why did you bring so many potatoes?" He said, "Eating out in City H is pricey. Bringing potatoes can save money. Eating potatoes three times a day saves a lot." I felt a little uncomfortable, but since I was traveling, I just endured it and moved on. At the security checkpoint, the staff weighed my luggage and said, "Sir, your baggage is overweight and you'll need to pay an excess baggage fee." Luke Gresham immediately frowned. "Overweight? How could it be overweight? These are all essentials." The staff patiently explained, "Sir, your luggage exceeds the allowed weight, so you'll have to pay the excess baggage fee according to regulations." Luke Gresham said firmly, "I'm not paying. This charge isn't worth it." Then he opened the suitcase, took out some cooked potatoes, and started eating them voraciously right in front of everyone. People around us gathered, pointing and whispering. I was so embarrassed I wanted to crawl into a hole. I tugged on Luke Gresham's arm, "Stop eating, this is too embarrassing. I'll pay the excess baggage fee." Luke Gresham shrugged my hand off, his mouth full of potatoes, mumbling, "You don't need to pay. I can handle it myself. You don't get it—that's called being thrifty." He kept eating for a full half hour, only stopping once the suitcase reached the weight limit. I stared at the greasy corner of his mouth, my stomach twisting. Before boarding, he handed me a boiled potato: "Here, take this. Eat it if you get hungry on the plane. Once we get to City H, you'll be having potatoes for all three meals. No buying anything else." I frowned and said, "I don't like eating potatoes, and eating them all the time isn't good for our health." Luke Gresham's expression darkened. "Lydia Sue, how can you be so unaware of thrift?" "A daughter-in-law of Gresham Family needs to know how to manage the household. How would you take care of things if you're like this?" The anger inside me flared up instantly: "Luke Gresham, I'm traveling with you, not coming here to suffer." "If you want to eat potatoes three meals a day, eat them yourself. I'm not joining you." He wasn't expecting me to push back, froze for a moment, then his tone turned even harsher: "Don't be ungrateful. If it weren't for your grandfather, I wouldn't have come out with you."

Ben slammed his wine glass hard on the table, the wine splashing onto the back of my hand, sharp and cold. "Wendy, you actually think you deserve to celebrate a birthday?" "Today's Nancy's death anniversary, you poisonous woman who stole her place—how dare you have the nerve to celebrate your birthday?" I trembled all over, about to explain, but he shoved me harshly to the ground. "If it weren't for you, Nancy would never have thrown herself into the sea." "I should've let you die with her!" In excruciating pain, my phone buzzed with an anonymous message—a glaring photo. Nancy, wearing a bikini, nestled in the arms of a stranger, laughing wildly and carefree. Then the phone rang, Nancy's voice dripping with sarcasm: "Sister, happy wedding anniversary." "Nancy? You're not dead?" "Dead? How could I possibly die without seeing you suffer at Ben's hands, worse than death itself? What a waste that would be." "You think Ben loves you? You're...

David stretched out his hand, which was missing an index finger, and walked toward me. The old scar at the stump glowed with a cold light under the desk lamp. Miss Xavier immediately rushed over, the tips of her nails almost poking my face. "Nancy, you're talking nonsense!" I stared at David's trembling severed finger. "At three o'clock in the morning, you secretly threw the pillow stained with my amniotic fluid into the garbage dump. Do you want me to find the cleaner from back then to confront you?" David's face turned deathly pale in an instant, and he clenched his fists. "I was just afraid your father would withdraw his investment and the company would go under..."...

At the moment the waves shattered the reef, I sank to the bottom of the sea, bearing eighteen years of grievances. Before my consciousness faded, Tina's malicious laughter still echoed in my ears: "Nicole, you're just a country bumpkin. Everything that belongs to the Scott Family was always mine!" "I never wanted to take anything from you, Tina," I said, coughing up seawater, my voice hoarse. "But why did you forge evidence, claim I stole Mom's jewelry, and drive me out of the house?" Mrs. Scott's voice was as cold as ice: "Don't call me Mom! Tina is my only daughter. Someone like you, who came from an orphanage, is not worthy of the Scott Family!" My eldest brother Bruce stood aside, his eyes filled with disgust: "Behave yourself and get out. Don't bring shame to the Scott Family anymore." "Adam, the 99th marriage proposal, are you ready to finally make me happy?" Bella's voice came through the phone, dripping with her usual disdain. I gripped my phone tight, staring at the video my friend sent—she was at a bar, leaning against Harvey, laughing like crazy: "He's just an idiot. Even if he proposes a hundred times, I still won't say yes!" "This time, it's definitely going to be spectacular." I heard my own calm voice say, "I booked the most expensive penthouse in the city, flew in five thousand roses, and even invited the media." Her breathing got noticeably faster: "You should've done this ages ago! When exactly?" "Tomorrow night at seven. But Bella..." I deliberately paused, "are you sure you'll say yes just because it's a big show?" "Of course! I always keep my word." After hanging up, I chuckled softly at the photo of her entertaining guests on my computer screen. "Adam, are you crazy?" My buddy...
