The Wrong Love

David stretched out his hand, which was missing an index finger, and walked toward me. The old scar at the stump glowed with a cold light under the desk lamp. "Nancy, I lost my finger to save you back then. Can't you give me another chance..." "When you used your hand to help Miss Xavier hide the pillow that killed my child, why didn't you think about giving my child a chance?" Miss Xavier immediately rushed over, the tips of her nails almost poking my face. "Nancy, you're talking nonsense!" I stared at David's trembling severed finger. "At three o'clock in the morning, you secretly threw the pillow stained with my amniotic fluid into the garbage dump. Do you want me to find the cleaner from back then to confront you?" David's face turned deathly pale in an instant, and he clenched his fists. "I was just afraid your father would withdraw his investment and the company would go under..." "So the lives of my child and my mother are not as important as your company?" I took a half-step back, pointed at the door, and said, "Get out now. Otherwise, I'll call the police and make you explain everything to them!"收起

Chapter 1 of "The Wrong Love"

The March wind bore a damp chill as it swept through the neatly arranged cypress trees of the cemetery. Holding a bouquet of pale purple forget-me-nots, I slowed my steps and stopped before my mother's gravestone. In the photograph, my mother smiled softly, the delicate lines at the corners of her eyes filled with the warmth of time. I crouched down and placed the bouquet before the stone, my fingertips gently tracing the cold marble. "Mom, I've come to see you." My voice was fragmented by the wind, scattering over the vast cemetery. Soft footsteps came from behind me; I did not turn around. At a time like this, no one would come to disturb. It wasn't until a bright yellow bouquet caught my eye that I slowly turned my face. David Jones stood three meters away, holding a large bunch of sunflowers, their petals trembling gently in the breeze. Five years had passed without seeing each other; he seemed largely unchanged, save for a few more traces of weariness etched between his brows. My gaze settled on his right hand; his index finger was missing a segment, the scar at the break glaring vividly in the sunlight. That was when he saved me—his finger had been torn off by the machine in the process. But that kindness was crushed to ashes the very day he betrayed me. He hesitated, stepped forward, and placed the sunflower beside the forget-me-nots, his voice tinged with barely perceptible hoarseness: "I came to see your mother." I said nothing, simply reached out, took the sunflower, and tossed it into a nearby trash bin. His face paled instantly, his broken-fingered hand clenched involuntarily: "Nancy Scott, do you really have to do this?" "My mother did not like sunflowers." I knelt once more before the gravestone, lit three incense sticks, and said, "She only loved forget-me-nots." The curling smoke from the incense blurred his outline. I watched the flames dance, placing the paper money into the iron basin one by one, the ashes swirling upward with the wind. "It's been five years," he stood behind me, his voice pleading, "Can we please talk properly? I know I was wrong back then, and I have regretted it ever since." "There's nothing to talk about." I cut him off, my eyes still fixed on my mother's photograph, "The past—I've long since let it go."

At the moment the waves shattered the reef, I sank to the bottom of the sea, bearing eighteen years of grievances. Before my consciousness faded, Tina's malicious laughter still echoed in my ears: "Nicole, you're just a country bumpkin. Everything that belongs to the Scott Family was always mine!" "I never wanted to take anything from you, Tina," I said, coughing up seawater, my voice hoarse. "But why did you forge evidence, claim I stole Mom's jewelry, and drive me out of the house?" Mrs. Scott's voice was as cold as ice: "Don't call me Mom! Tina is my only daughter. Someone like you, who came from an orphanage, is not worthy of the Scott Family!" My eldest brother Bruce stood aside, his eyes filled with disgust: "Behave yourself and get out. Don't bring shame to the Scott Family anymore." "Adam, the 99th marriage proposal, are you ready to finally make me happy?" Bella's voice came through the phone, dripping with her usual disdain. Even if he proposes a hundred times, I still won't say yes!" "This time, it's definitely going to be spectacular." I heard my own calm voice say, "I booked the most expensive penthouse in the city, flew in five thousand roses, and even invited the media." Her breathing got noticeably faster: "You should've done this ages ago! When exactly?" "Tomorrow night at seven. But Bella..." I deliberately paused, "are you sure you'll say yes just because it's a big show?" "Of course! I always keep my word." After hanging up, I chuckled softly at the photo of her entertaining guests on my computer screen. "Adam, are you crazy?" My buddy...
