The Rescue Team Leader's Conspiracy

2026-03-04

The earthquake hit without any warning. I barely managed to stagger half a step before the violent shaking threw me down, my forehead slamming hard against the corner of a cabinet, and my vision going black in an instant. "Felix! Help me!" I screamed with every ounce of strength, the dust choking me, tearing at my lungs. The bedroom door slammed open, and Felix's figure wavered into view amid the shaking. He was the rescue team leader, supposed to be my anchor in that moment. But he didn't even pause for a fraction of a second. "Felix! I'm here!" I reached out to grab his pant leg, but my hand found only empty air. He paused for a moment, his back rigid, his voice laced with an unsettling urgency: "Wendy, I have to go save people first—wait for me!" "I'm going to get crushed to death!" I watched him grab his jacket, my heart squeezed tight as if gripped by an icy hand. "Even though you're the rescue team leader, don’t forget I'm your wife too!" He didn't look back. The security door slammed shut with a clang, cutting off my screams and the earthquake's roar. The next second, the world spun wildly, and a fierce, burning pain shot through my right leg. The man I've loved for five years chose to abandon me in the face of life and death...收起

Chapter 1 of "The Rescue Team Leader's Conspiracy"

Now, I'm left with only half a life. More precisely, only half my body remains. My right leg feels hollow and empty; the wind blows through the pant leg like a soulless bag, flapping against the wheelchair's armrest. All this was caused by that sudden earthquake. And by my husband, Felix Carter. When the earthquake struck, I was in the kitchen, preparing vegetables. The tiled floor suddenly shook violently, my vegetable basket crashed to the ground, and greens scattered everywhere. I instinctively ran toward the door but was knocked to the ground. The load-bearing wall groaned under the unbearable strain, dust pouring from the ceiling like a waterfall. I screamed Felix Carter's name, my voice swallowed by the roar around me. Felix Carter was the team leader of the city emergency rescue team; that day, he was supposed to be resting at home. I saw him rush out of the bedroom, swaying, his figure unsteady. His eyes flicked over me, pausing for barely a second. Then, he spun and bolted to the hallway, grabbing his jacket and rescue kit. "Felix Carter! Help me!" I screamed with everything I had. His footsteps faltered for a moment, but he didn't look back. He slammed the security door shut with a loud bang. At that moment, I didn't even have time to feel despair creeping in. The prefab ceiling panel crashed down with a thunderous crash; I felt a searing pain shoot through my right leg, then everything went dark. When I woke again, I was lying inside a makeshift rescue tent. My right leg was wrapped in thick bandages, but I had no sensation at all. The nurse told me that to save my life, they had to amputate my right leg. I nodded without shedding a single tear. It felt like my tears had dried up the moment I was trapped beneath the rubble. Outside the tent, the noise was alive with waves of cheers rising and falling. I turned my head and saw Felix Carter surrounded by a crowd as he walked inside. He wore a rescue uniform dusted with grime, his face weary, but his eyes strikingly bright. "Leader Carter, you're incredible! You saved three more people!" "No wonder he's the team leader—this entire rescue depended on him!" Praise surged toward him like a tidal wave; he smiled and waved, looking both humble and determined. It wasn't until he reached my hospital bed that his smile faded slightly. "Wendy, I'm sorry I'm late." He held my hand, his voice thick with guilt. His hand was warm, but to me, it felt as cold as ice. I looked at him, wanting to say something, but in the end, I only whispered: "It's okay." I didn't want to expose him, and I didn't dare to. At that moment, I knew—between us, just like my right leg—that everything was completely broken. On the third day after the earthquake, a simple commendation ceremony was held at the temporary shelter. Felix Carter was undeniably the central figure. Director Warren stood on the makeshift podium, holding the microphone, his voice strong and clear. "In this sudden disaster, Leader Felix Carter, led from the front, fighting tirelessly for over thirty hours straight, rescuing twelve trapped people, embodying true heroism with his actions!" The audience erupted into roaring applause, with some even shouting excitedly, "Hero!" Lee stood in the front row, clapping vigorously, her eyes shining with admiration. She was a veteran member of the rescue team and had always been a fierce supporter of Felix Carter. "Leader Carter is our hero—putting aside his own safety, thinking only about saving others!" Lee said to those nearby, pride thick in her voice.

I was awakened by a kiss from Morris Jackson. "Awake now?" He chuckled softly, his fingertips brushing my cheek. I suddenly grasped his wrist. "What about the mole on your right cheek?" He froze, then propped himself up with his left hand. "Darling, you're mistaken. My mole has always been on the left." The bedroom door opened, and Naomi Scott leaned in the doorway wearing my silk nightgown. "Morris, I made some soup—your favorite." Her tone was intimate, as if she was Morris's wife. Blood seemed to rush backward through my veins. "Why is she here?!" Morris Jackson casually draped his arm over her shoulder. "Naomi is a guest. Don't make such a big deal out of it." I stared at the man with a mole on his left cheek, left-handed, defending his bitter rival. My heart suddenly turned cold. "You're not Morris Jackson... who are you really?" He leaned close, his hot breath whispering in my ear: "The Mirror...

The iron chains rubbed my wrists raw. The damp, musty stench of the basement made me cough uncontrollably. Ruby Lynn ground her heel into the back of my hand. She looked down at me, sneering. "Did you really think Mom and Dad brought you home to welcome you back into the family?" "You're nothing but a pawn to prop up the Lynn Group's stock prices!" I bared my teeth, glaring at her. "Even pawns can bite back. I remember every last detail about your company's cancer-causing products." Mother sauntered over with a glass of red wine. She splashed the liquid all over my face. "Bite back? Who'd ever believe the word of a lowly country brat like you?" "Once the company goes public, we'll dump you back in that mountain village to rot." Father kicked me hard in the knee. His voice was cold and menacing. "Behave yourself. Or you'll regret it." I licked the wine off my lips. Then...

"Vincent, let's get a divorce." I slid the agreement across the table. He glanced at it, then suddenly grabbed it and tossed it into the candle flame—the fire flared, swallowing the words "Beth Woodward." "Are you out of your mind?" He slammed his hand on the table and stood up. "I don't love you anymore." My voice was steadier than I expected. "Every lie you told only made me more disgusted that I ever loved you." His eyes darkened, and he suddenly leaned in: "Do you think divorce is that simple?" Just then, the phone rang. I answered. A woman's voice came through, laughing: "Mrs. Woodward, your husband said something interesting last night while he was at my place..." I looked at Vincent Mussolini's suddenly changed face and whispered into the receiver, "What did he say?"收起
