Chapter 1 of "99 Men"

In the eighth year of our marriage, news of the Luke family's financial collapse struck like a thunderclap, catching me completely off guard. Everyone pointed the finger at Calvin Luke. He was the illegitimate son who acknowledged his lineage just six months ago—and since his return, he has plunged the Luke household into turmoil. I had just finished my fifth D&C surgery at the hospital. The anesthesia hadn't worn off, and a piercing ache pressed down on my lower abdomen when I received a call from Kevin Luke. His voice trembled with tears. He said Calvin Luke had delivered an ultimatum: as long as I slept with ninety-nine men, he would spare the Luke family. My hand holding the cell phone shook, tears splattered over the screen, but I gritted my teeth and agreed. I had loved Kevin for eight years, from the time he had nothing to when he became Mr. Luke. I couldn't stand by and watch all his hard work be destroyed in an instant. After hanging up, I took a taxi to the warehouse Calvin Luke had designated. Pushing the door open, I saw Kevin Luke lying on the floor, his face drenched in blood, the stains at the corners of his mouth still fresh. He saw me, struggled to his feet, ignoring his wounds, and clutched me tightly in his arms. "Wendy, I've wronged you." His tears burned the skin on my neck. "Once the Luke family weathers this storm, I swear I will repay you a thousandfold. Not a single one who harmed you will be spared." I wiped the blood from his face and told him I wasn't afraid, as long as he was safe. At that moment, I didn't notice the flicker of cold calculation in his eyes. Only after the ninety-eighth man had left did I drag my nearly shattered body to find Kevin Luke. I wanted to tell him, just one more to go—we're almost at the end of this torment. I didn't dare enter straight away, fearing the scent on me would disgust him, so I stood outside his office door and waited. But the voices inside stabbed at my heart like an ice pick. "Brother, that's the ninety-eighth. Wendy Scott probably doesn't even have the courage to hold her head up anymore, does she?" It was Calvin Luke's voice, thick with scorn. "I'll make her taste what it's like to be humiliated." Kevin Luke's voice was as cold as ice. "If she hadn't exposed Vivian's private photos back then, Vivian wouldn't have been driven to depression by cyberbullying. Those three scars on her wrist still haven't faded." My entire body froze, as if my blood had turned to ice. My account was hacked eight years ago. I explained it to Kevin Luke, but he simply refused to believe me. "Are all the videos saved? Once the last one finishes, we'll leak everything to the media." Kevin Luke spoke again. "I want to utterly destroy her reputation." I couldn't bear to listen any longer. I turned to leave, but suddenly a sharp pain shot through my lower abdomen. Clutching the wall, I crouched down, tears pouring uncontrollably. The office door swung open, and Calvin Luke stepped out. When he saw me, his smile grew even more mocking. "Oh, Mrs. Luke? You just lost your baby a week ago, and already you're back on your feet? Quite the stubborn spirit." He kicked my arm with his foot. "Just one more left. Hang in there, and you'll be 'free' soon enough." He had only taken a few steps before turning back to look at me, his eyes concealing something I couldn't understand. Then Kevin Luke appeared, his face instantly softening into the familiar tenderness I knew so well. He hurried over, gently supporting me with cautious care. "Wendy, what are you doing here? Are you feeling unwell?" I gazed at the persistent redness and swelling on his face and suddenly realized—every time I saw him, he was bruised. I used to believe Calvin Luke had beaten him, but now I know—it was all an act he performed for me. How could one person sink this low, all for revenge?

The iron chains rubbed my wrists raw. The damp, musty stench of the basement made me cough uncontrollably. Ruby Lynn ground her heel into the back of my hand. She looked down at me, sneering. "Did you really think Mom and Dad brought you home to welcome you back into the family?" "You're nothing but a pawn to prop up the Lynn Group's stock prices!" I bared my teeth, glaring at her. "Even pawns can bite back. I remember every last detail about your company's cancer-causing products." Mother sauntered over with a glass of red wine. She splashed the liquid all over my face. "Bite back? Who'd ever believe the word of a lowly country brat like you?" "Once the company goes public, we'll dump you back in that mountain village to rot." Father kicked me hard in the knee. His voice was cold and menacing. "Behave yourself. Or you'll regret it." I licked the wine off my lips. Then...

That login notification lighting up my phone screen felt like a silent thorn piercing through the calm of my wedding preparations. He said it was his cousin borrowing the account to watch shows in her new neighborhood—a perfectly logical explanation, said with such ease. But I instinctively recorded the audio. This wedding was destined to be far from peaceful.收起

A Calculated Exit

"Vincent, let's get a divorce." I slid the agreement across the table. He glanced at it, then suddenly grabbed it and tossed it into the candle flame—the fire flared, swallowing the words "Beth Woodward." "Are you out of your mind?" He slammed his hand on the table and stood up. "I don't love you anymore." My voice was steadier than I expected. "Every lie you told only made me more disgusted that I ever loved you." His eyes darkened, and he suddenly leaned in: "Do you think divorce is that simple?" Just then, the phone rang. I answered. A woman's voice came through, laughing: "Mrs. Woodward, your husband said something interesting last night while he was at my place..." I looked at Vincent Mussolini's suddenly changed face and whispered into the receiver, "What did he say?"收起

That day, I came home early. My pajamas were on another woman, who was leaning against my husband's chest. "Mrs. Charlotte," she smiled, her voice sweet as poisoned honey, "Alexander said I look better in these pajamas." Alexander Salk silently held her shoulders. "We are getting a divorce." My voice was unexpectedly calm. The gentleness on his face instantly froze, replaced by a darkness I had never seen before. "Divorce?" He chuckled darkly, closing in on me step by step, his breath hot against my ear. The next moment, my mouth was covered, a sharp, acrid scent invading my nostrils. Before my vision blurred, I heard him whisper by my ear, like a lover's final murmur: "Sleep. When you wake, you will forget all the painful memories... and only remember how much you love me."收起

It's not like you're the one running the 800 meters." He didn't look up, his voice low, "Don't let your guard down—Christina's in this too." Before the starting gun, Christina Sterling came over, her sweet smile hiding a sharp edge: "Melanie, don't go easy on me later!" I was about to snap back when Chip Johnson suddenly grabbed me: "Melanie, maybe you shouldn't run? I'm afraid you'll get hurt." "What nonsense are you talking about!" I shrugged him off. "I've trained for a whole year just for today!" The gunshot went off, and I dashed forward, but halfway through the second lap, a sharp pain shot through the sole of my foot, like needles stabbing into my flesh. I gritted my teeth as I crossed the finish line...

That wedding six years ago was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. "Farina Franco, you truly disgust me." Gene Donovan threw the photo in my face, his eyes sharp like a poisoned blade. The photo showed me naked, tangled with a stranger—fake, all of it fake. "Listen to me, let me explain—" "Explain?" He sneered, "My sister's diary is right here! Your father raped her and drove her to suicide! There's not a single decent person in your family!" He forcibly dragged me away and shoved me into the car. "Where are you taking me?" "The psychiatric hospital. You're insane and need treatment." His voice was cold and emotionless: "This is the punishment you deserve."收起
