Me at Fifty

2026-03-04

Sitting alone in the dimly lit room, clutching the invitation to the "Happy Family" challenge, my heart felt as if it had plunged into an ice cellar. My heavily pregnant daughter and my son-in-law, who's always playing the pitiful victim in front of the camera, actually joined forces to deceive me onto the judgment stage of this mediation show. Under the spotlight, lies cut like knives, and I became their sacrificial pawn to boost their clicks and views...收起

Chapter 1 of "Me at Fifty"

My name is Hanna Lynn. I'm fifty-eight years old and was the head of the language teaching and research group at the city's key high school before retiring. Chalk dust has whitened my temples, and years of teaching have forged my backbone for nurturing and educating. My spouse passed away when my daughter, Stella Scott, was ten—an acute heart attack, without leaving a single last word. I held his cold hand and sat on a bench in the hospital corridor all through the night. The next day, with red eyes, I taught morning self-study to my students. From that moment on, I became both father and mother, raising Stella into adulthood. Stella was determined and got accepted into the local teachers' college. After graduating, she became a homeroom teacher at an elementary school. Her job was stable, but her temperament resembled her father's—gentle and lacking decisiveness. Now she is eight months pregnant, her belly proudly rounded, and she has to support her back when she walks. This should be the happiest time for the whole family, yet my heart feels heavy, like a stone suspended in the air that won't settle. The source of my unease is my son-in-law, Mario Young. Mario Young was Stella Scott's college classmate from a remote rural village. After graduating, he didn't look for a proper job but instead followed the trend and became an internet celebrity. Every day, he films little snippets of family life in front of the camera. His image is that of a 'struggling youth from the countryside,' always calling everyone 'family.' His tone is so sweet it's almost sickly, especially when he talks to me—'mom this' and 'mom that.' But that smile always feels like a mask stuck to his face, hiding a sharpness in his eyes I can't quite decipher.

The Login Alert Hides a Lie

2026-03-04
That login notification lighting up my phone screen felt like a silent thorn piercing through the calm of my wedding preparations. He said it was his cousin borrowing the account to watch shows in her new neighborhood—a perfectly logical explanation, said with such ease. But I instinctively recorded the audio. The wedding dress still sparkled in the display window, the scent of the invitations barely faded, yet I had already begun investigating my fiancé. This wedding was destined to be far from peaceful.收起

A Calculated Exit

2026-03-04
"Vincent, let's get a divorce." I slid the agreement across the table. He glanced at it, then suddenly grabbed it and tossed it into the candle flame—the fire flared, swallowing the words "Beth Woodward." "Are you out of your mind?" He slammed his hand on the table and stood up. "I don't love you anymore." My voice was steadier than I expected. "Every lie you told only made me more disgusted that I ever loved you." His eyes darkened, and he suddenly leaned in: "Do you think divorce is that simple?" Just then, the phone rang. I answered. A woman's voice came through, laughing: "Mrs. Woodward, your husband said something interesting last night while he was at my place..." I looked at Vincent Mussolini's suddenly changed face and whispered into the receiver, "What did he say?"收起

That day, I came home early. My pajamas were on another woman, who was leaning against my husband's chest. "Mrs. Charlotte," she smiled, her voice sweet as poisoned honey, "Alexander said I look better in these pajamas." Alexander Salk silently held her shoulders. "We are getting a divorce." My voice was unexpectedly calm. The gentleness on his face instantly froze, replaced by a darkness I had never seen before. "Divorce?" He chuckled darkly, closing in on me step by step, his breath hot against my ear. The next moment, my mouth was covered, a sharp, acrid scent invading my nostrils. Before my vision blurred, I heard him whisper by my ear, like a lover's final murmur: "Sleep. When you wake, you will forget all the painful memories... and only remember how much you love me."收起

The Needles in My Shoes

"Chip, tie my shoelaces tighter. If I win, I'll buy you ice cream!" I stood on tiptoe, nudging his arm. He crouched down, his fingers going a little stiff. I teased, "Nervous? It's not like you're the one running the 800 meters." He didn't look up, his voice low, "Don't let your guard down—Christina's in this too." Before the starting gun, Christina Sterling came over, her sweet smile hiding a sharp edge: "Melanie, don't go easy on me later!" I was about to snap back when Chip Johnson suddenly grabbed me: "Melanie, maybe you shouldn't run? I'm afraid you'll get hurt." "What nonsense are you talking about!" I shrugged him off. "I've trained for a whole year just for today!" The gunshot went off, and I dashed forward, but halfway through the second lap, a sharp pain shot through the sole of my foot, like needles stabbing into my flesh. I gritted my teeth as I crossed the finish line...

That wedding six years ago was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. "Farina Franco, you truly disgust me." Gene Donovan threw the photo in my face, his eyes sharp like a poisoned blade. The photo showed me naked, tangled with a stranger—fake, all of it fake. "Listen to me, let me explain—" "Explain?" He sneered, "My sister's diary is right here! Your father raped her and drove her to suicide! There's not a single decent person in your family!" He forcibly dragged me away and shoved me into the car. "Where are you taking me?" "The psychiatric hospital. You're insane and need treatment." His voice was cold and emotionless: "This is the punishment you deserve."收起
