The Scratch-Off

2026-03-04

I prepared customized scratch cards as an anniversary gift, together totaling a huge sum. When he scratched off that string of numbers with his own hands, his voice trembled with excitement. But the next moment, his phone rang. He said he was taking this "windfall surprise" to immediately visit another woman. At that moment, I fully realized that what he had scratched off was not the prize, but the true nature of his changing heart.收起

Chapter 1 of "The Scratch-Off"

Today is the third anniversary of my relationship with Jack Judd. I ordered a stack of scratch-offs from an online store half a month ago. Each scratch-off has a different prize amount. But together, they add up to exactly 13,140,000 dollars. I wanted to use this gift to bring up the topic of marriage with him. At six in the evening, I sat in an elegant restaurant we had agreed on, holding the gift box filled with scratch-offs. Jack was forty minutes late. As soon as he sat down, he complained about the traffic and didn't even say "Happy Anniversary." I swallowed my disappointment and pushed the gift box toward him. "This is your anniversary gift. Scratch them and see." Jack raised an eyebrow and casually unwrapped the gift box. He picked up the first scratch-off card and scraped off the coating with his nail. "520?" He paused in surprise, then picked up the second card. "1314?" Then the third, the fourth... When he scratched the last card and saw that sequence of "10000000," his eyes instantly lit up. "Quinn! Is this— is this real? 13.14 million dollars?" He grabbed my hand, his voice trembling. I smiled and nodded, about to say something about marriage. Suddenly, his phone rang. It was Mandy Johnson calling. When Jack answered, his tone immediately softened, completely unlike the excitement he'd shown moments before. "Mandy, I'm coming over right now—I have a big surprise for you." After hanging up, he stuffed the scratch cards into his bag and got up to leave. I grabbed him. "Jack, today is our anniversary. Where are you going?" He looked back at me, his eyes full of impatience. "Quinn, don't be so childish. Mandy's home alone and scared—I have to go keep her company." At that moment, Mandy suddenly walked in through the dining room doorway. She was wearing the dress Jack had said last time "doesn't suit me," walked straight up to Jack, and linked her arm with his. "Jack, I couldn't wait any longer, so I came to find you." Jack reached out and gently ruffled her hair, the affectionate gesture painfully obvious. "Wait a moment, I'll withdraw that 13.14 million dollars and spend it all on buying you bags, okay?" Mandy smiled and nodded, then shot me a challenging glance. I looked at the two of them, my heart aching as if pierced by needles. "Jack, what do you mean?" Jack scoffed, "Quinn, you don't really think I want to marry you, do you? Besides cooking and taking care of me, what else can you do?" "Mandy is more beautiful than you, more sensible, and can help me pull strings. I've long grown tired of you." Mandy added, "Quinn, you can't force love. Jack loves me, so stop holding on." Looking at their ugly faces, I suddenly felt incredibly clear-headed. "Fine, let's break up." Jack paused for a moment, then laughed: "Break up? Fine. I have 13.14 million dollars now; what kind of girlfriend can't I find? Quinn, don't regret this later." After saying this, he hugged Mandy and walked out of the Western Restaurant without looking back. I sat there, staring at the untouched steak on the table, tears finally streaming down my face.

I was awakened by a kiss from Morris Jackson. "Awake now?" He chuckled softly, his fingertips brushing my cheek. I suddenly grasped his wrist. "What about the mole on your right cheek?" He froze, then propped himself up with his left hand. "Darling, you're mistaken. My mole has always been on the left." The bedroom door opened, and Naomi Scott leaned in the doorway wearing my silk nightgown. "Morris, I made some soup—your favorite." Her tone was intimate, as if she was Morris's wife. Blood seemed to rush backward through my veins. "Why is she here?!" Morris Jackson casually draped his arm over her shoulder. "Naomi is a guest. Don't make such a big deal out of it." I stared at the man with a mole on his left cheek, left-handed, defending his bitter rival. My heart suddenly turned cold. "You're not Morris Jackson... who are you really?" He leaned close, his hot breath whispering in my ear: "The Mirror...

The iron chains rubbed my wrists raw. The damp, musty stench of the basement made me cough uncontrollably. Ruby Lynn ground her heel into the back of my hand. She looked down at me, sneering. "Did you really think Mom and Dad brought you home to welcome you back into the family?" "You're nothing but a pawn to prop up the Lynn Group's stock prices!" I bared my teeth, glaring at her. "Even pawns can bite back. I remember every last detail about your company's cancer-causing products." Mother sauntered over with a glass of red wine. She splashed the liquid all over my face. "Bite back? Who'd ever believe the word of a lowly country brat like you?" "Once the company goes public, we'll dump you back in that mountain village to rot." Father kicked me hard in the knee. His voice was cold and menacing. "Behave yourself. Or you'll regret it." I licked the wine off my lips. Then...

That login notification lighting up my phone screen felt like a silent thorn piercing through the calm of my wedding preparations. This wedding was destined to be far from peaceful.收起

"Vincent, let's get a divorce." I slid the agreement across the table. He glanced at it, then suddenly grabbed it and tossed it into the candle flame—the fire flared, swallowing the words "Beth Woodward." "Are you out of your mind?" He slammed his hand on the table and stood up. "I don't love you anymore." My voice was steadier than I expected. "Every lie you told only made me more disgusted that I ever loved you." His eyes darkened, and he suddenly leaned in: "Do you think divorce is that simple?" Just then, the phone rang. I answered. A woman's voice came through, laughing: "Mrs. Woodward, your husband said something interesting last night while he was at my place..." That day, I came home early. My pajamas were on another woman, who was leaning against my husband's chest. "Mrs. Charlotte," she smiled, her voice sweet as poisoned honey, "Alexander said I look better in these pajamas." Alexander Salk silently held her shoulders. "We are getting a divorce." My voice was unexpectedly calm. The gentleness on his face instantly froze, replaced by a darkness I had never seen before. "Divorce?" He chuckled darkly, closing in on me step by step, his breath hot against my ear. The next moment, my mouth was covered, a sharp, acrid scent invading my nostrils. Before my vision blurred, I heard him whisper by my ear, like a lover's final murmur: "Sleep. When you wake, you will forget all the painful memories... and only remember how much you love me."收起

"Chip, tie my shoelaces tighter. If I win, I'll buy you ice cream!" I stood on tiptoe, nudging his arm. He crouched down, his fingers going a little stiff. I teased, "Nervous? It's not like you're the one running the 800 meters." He didn't look up, his voice low, "Don't let your guard down—Christina's in this too." Before the starting gun, Christina Sterling came over, her sweet smile hiding a sharp edge: "Melanie, don't go easy on me later!" I was about to snap back when Chip Johnson suddenly grabbed me: "Melanie, maybe you shouldn't run? I'm afraid you'll get hurt." "What nonsense are you talking about!" I shrugged him off. "I've trained for a whole year just for today!" The gunshot went off, and I dashed forward, but halfway through the second lap, a sharp pain shot through the sole of my foot, like needles stabbing into my flesh. I gritted my teeth as I crossed the finish line...
