The Designated Bride

"Don't move." As the rusty black cloth was tied over my eyes, I heard the kidnappers' harsh warning. After being shoved into the basement, they handed me a mobile phone: "Call your parents. We want ten billion." My hands and feet went ice cold as I dialed the number: "Mom, I've been kidnapped..." No sooner had I hung up than the basement's iron gate was slammed open. Siegfried Lowell stood backlit, his entire body strapped with explosives. He grabbed me and took off running. Photos of my kidnapping spread across the internet, with rumors saying I was violated by eighteen men. But Siegfried Lowell arrived holding a bouquet of roses. "Don't listen to their lies," he said, dropping to one knee and revealing a diamond ring. "Marry me, Amelia Clark."收起

Chapter 1 of "The Designated Bride"

A cold touch spread across the back of my neck. Just as I stepped out through the studio's glass door, a black cloth smelling of rust was thrown over my eyes. "Don't move." A coarse male voice whispered into my ear, dripping with menace. My heart skipped a beat. I tried to struggle, but my wrists were tightly bound with rough hemp rope. The force dragging me was strong; I staggered as they shoved me into a bumpy van. The van was thick with the smell of gasoline and cheap tobacco, making me cough uncontrollably. "Who are you?" I forced the words out, voice trembling. No one answered. Only the heavy sound of breathing mixed with the rumble of the vehicle filled the air. I had no idea how long I'd been there until the vehicle abruptly stopped, and I was dragged out once more. Beneath my feet was damp earth, the air thick with mildew—it was clear we'd reached some underground place. When the black cloth was ripped away, I squinted against the sudden light. In front of me was a dim basement; moss clung to the walls, and cluttered wooden crates were piled in the corner. A man wearing a black mask stood before me, holding a mobile phone. "Call your family. We want a ransom of ten billion." He held the mobile phone out in front of me. Ten billion. That number sent a chill through my entire body. Though the Clark Family is wealthy, they simply couldn't round up that much cash in such a short time. I clenched my fists, my fingertips whitening: "My parents might not be able to raise that much." "That's your parents' problem." The man's voice was cold and flat. "If the money isn't ready by midnight, you'd better just wait to die." He pressed the speakerphone button and dialed my mom. "Mom." I forced my voice to stay steady. "Amelia? Where are you?" My mother's anxious voice came through on the line. "I've been kidnapped. They want one billion in ransom, delivered to the designated place by midnight." I spoke quickly, and then the man hung up on me. My mobile phone was taken away, and I was tossed onto the cold floor. Fear washed over me like a tidal wave. I thought of Siegfried Lowell—the man I had loved for ten years. From the very first time I saw him on campus at fifteen, my eyes never left his form. He was the heir to the Lowell Group—handsome, radiant, like a star shining in the night sky. I never dared to approach him; I could only watch from a distance. I don't know if this time I'll ever see him again. The clock in the basement ticked away, each tick pounding against my heart. Time slipped by slowly; outside, there was utter silence. Despair was setting in—maybe my parents really couldn't raise the ransom, maybe today I'd be buried here for good. Just as I was about to break, the basement's iron gate was suddenly kicked open. Blinding light poured in, and I instinctively raised my hand to shield my eyes. A familiar silhouette stood backlit in the doorway. It was Siegfried Lowell. I was stunned. He was covered head to toe in explosives, the fuse hanging at his side, his eyes sharp as knives. "Let her go." His voice was low and commanding, carrying an authority that brooked no refusal.

In the center of the hotel ballroom, Bruce knelt on one knee, holding two printed pages. His gaze seemed tender, but his words pierced like ice: "Melissa, sign this prenup, and we're engaged." "Repaying dating expenses after a breakup? Quitting my job within two years to prepare for pregnancy? Bruce, you call this security?" My voice trembled, the papers shaking in my hand. His face darkened with impatience. "My mom says women need boundaries to be reliable. Don't make a scene—everyone's watching." "Reliable?" I laughed coldly. "You want your money back, while I become an unpaid housekeeper? This engagement is off." I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm. "Are you really doing this? After all I've invested, you won't even sign an agreement?" Panic flickered in his eyes. "Your investment was just calculation and control?" I shook off his grip. "These three years... I wasted them on you." Just as I walked away decisively, his phone rang abruptly....

Clenching the strap of my canvas bag, I blended in with the customers, secretly spying on my own supermarket. Then the piercing alarm blared—for me. That intern manager, Diana Bourbon, hurried over. "The alarm on the security gate went off. What are you hiding? Take off your coat for inspection!" All eyes drilling into me, I forced myself to stay calm. "I didn't steal anything. You have no right to make me take off my clothes." She sneered, suddenly leaning close to my ear and whispering just loud enough for us to hear, "Right? Celine Anderson, do you really think you're the only heiress of the Anderson family?" "Your mom, Zoe Liebes, is just a homewrecker!" My mind went blank, and it felt like all the blood in my body had frozen solid. She looked at my pale face and smugly dropped the final bombshell: "My mom, Riley Bourbon, is Bob Anderson's legitimate wife. So, you, a secret daughter, what...

"The perfume on your suit, Frank, isn't mine." I threw his coat onto the sofa, my fingertips cold. He tugged at his tie, avoiding my eyes. "I must've picked it up from a client. It happens." "Would a client join you for a candlelit dinner in the Rose Private Room on our Wedding Anniversary?" I slammed the invoice down. "And draw a heart with Mindy's lipstick?" "Whitney, stop being unreasonable!" He slammed his fist on the table. "Mindy's your sister — she's the deputy general manager of the company! We were just talking business!" "Talking business requires lying about working overtime?" I stepped closer. "Requires her parachuting into your company as the deputy general manager without even basic logistics knowledge?" The door suddenly flew open. Mindy walked in with her bag, smiling brightly. "Sister, why are you quarreling with Frank again?" "Quarreling?" I sneered. "You said you were on a business trip abroad last week — so why was your...
