Fading Loyalty

Charles Lopez casually tossed the divorce agreement aside; the paper brushed my face before falling onto the sofa. "Eileen, how long do you plan to make a scene?" He loosened his tie, his voice thick with impatience. I didn't move, just looked at him. "Signing it is best for both of us." He seemed to find it amusing, leaning in close. The familiar scent of his cologne mixed with a hint of unfamiliar, cloying sweetness. "Eileen, if you leave me, where else could you possibly go?" He pinched my chin firmly, "A housewife without a job—how do you expect to support yourself?" I brushed his hand away, my tone so calm it made him frown: "That's none of your concern."收起

Chapter 1 of "Fading Loyalty"

I placed the drafted divorce agreement on the coffee table while Charles Lopez was watching the financial news. He didn't even lift his eyelids, lightly pressing the remote to turn the volume down. "What are you sulking about now?" His voice carried his usual casual indifference, as if it were just a trivial matter. I said nothing and simply pushed the pen toward him. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling window, falling onto the agreement, making the black text especially clear. Only then did Charles Lopez turn his face toward me, his brow furrowing slightly: "Eileen, are you serious?" "Yes." I nodded, my voice so calm it surprised even me, "I've made up my mind." He put down the remote and leaned back on the sofa, his gaze sweeping over the agreement's terms as his expression darkened. "The house is yours, the car is yours, and the funds will be transferred to your name," he read the property division clause aloud, his tone tinged with mockery. "Eileen, are you doing this to spite me or do you really want to leave?" "I really want a divorce." I cut him off, "If you're unwilling, then I don't want any of it. I just want to sign the divorce papers." Charles Lopez's expression turned completely cold. He stood up, came over to me, and looked down with a towering presence: "How have I wronged you? After all these years, haven't I treated you well enough?" I lifted my eyes to him—the man I had loved for eight whole years—now his face was marked only by unfamiliar distance and coldness. "You haven't wronged me." I said softly, "It's me who doesn't want this anymore." "You don't want this anymore?" He repeated those words, as if hearing the most ridiculous joke ever told. "Eileen, we've been married for five years. I've been loyal to you without question. What exactly are you unhappy about?" Loyalty. The word was like a thin needle, lightly pricking me, but I hardly felt the pain anymore. I once longed so desperately for his loyalty, but once disappointment had piled up enough, those two words lost all meaning. "Charles," I looked him in the eyes and said, word by word, "I don't need your loyalty anymore." Charles Lopez's face grew even darker. Just as he was about to speak, his phone suddenly rang. He glanced at the caller ID, his eyes flickering briefly, and without avoiding me, he answered immediately. "Hello?" His tone softened instantly, a stark contrast to the coldness he'd shown me moments before. "Okay, I understand. I'll be there right away." After hanging up, he grabbed the coat from the sofa and tossed me a line: "Stop messing around. We'll talk when I get back," then hurried out. I knew it was Ophelia Sharpe calling. That woman, always saved as "client" in his phone, yet sending him suggestive messages late at night. I walked to the entrance, watching his car vanish beyond the community gate, then slowly closed the door, refolded the divorce agreement, and slipped it back into my bag. He thinks I'm just throwing a tantrum, but what he doesn't realize is that I've been waiting for this day for a long time. In the stillness of the night, I always find myself remembering the early days when we first got together.

The smell of disinfectant returned, stabbing into my memory like a needle. "Cynthia," Veronica Salk nudged me with her elbow, her voice barely above a whisper, "he's looking over again. That gaze... exactly the same as in the last life." I stared at Jeff Fitzpatrick rolling up his sleeves in the distance—his hands that had once carved seventy-two cuts into me. "I know." My throat tightened. "He's about to hand us that 'ticket to hell' again." Sure enough, he came over, the velvet box glaring under the light. "Cynthia, Veronica," his voice was as gentle as a serpent's tongue, "there is something I must say to you today." The shutters clicked rapidly around us, our colleagues beginning to jeer. In my past life, it was in this very commotion that I foolishly reached out my hand. "I hope," he opened the box, the diamond's cold gleam sharp and forbidding, "to choose one of you to be my wife." I dialed Mom's phone number, but all I heard on the other end was laughter and chatter. "Mom, I'm having surgery today to donate my corneas to Jason." "Stop pretending to be a good person!" "We never forced you to donate your corneas to Jason!" After hanging up, I tremblingly dialed Jason's number, hoping to hear...

On the first day of school, sunlight heated the fresh ink scent of the new textbooks until it was almost scalding, and I thought this would be a perfect beginning. But my mobile phone vibrated wildly inside the podium drawer, like a bomb about to detonate. In the parent group chat, a message popped up: "Teacher Collins, how can such terrible textbooks be used for my son?" In the next moment, the words "Richest Man in J City" slammed against my face, and all forty pairs of eyes in the class fixed sharply on me. I clenched the chalk tightly and took a deep breath—so my very first lesson of the new semester was called "war."收起

In the center of the hotel ballroom, Bruce knelt on one knee, holding two printed pages. His gaze seemed tender, but his words pierced like ice: "Melissa, sign this prenup, and we're engaged." "Repaying dating expenses after a breakup? Quitting my job within two years to prepare for pregnancy? Bruce, you call this security?" My voice trembled, the papers shaking in my hand. His face darkened with impatience. "My mom says women need boundaries to be reliable. Don't make a scene—everyone's watching." "Reliable?" I laughed coldly. "You want your money back, while I become an unpaid housekeeper? This engagement is off." I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm. "Are you really doing this? After all I've invested, you won't even sign an agreement?" Panic flickered in his eyes. "Your investment was just calculation and control?" I shook off his grip. "These three years... I wasted them on you." Just as I walked away decisively, his phone rang abruptly....

Clenching the strap of my canvas bag, I blended in with the customers, secretly spying on my own supermarket. Then the piercing alarm blared—for me. That intern manager, Diana Bourbon, hurried over. "The alarm on the security gate went off. What are you hiding? Take off your coat for inspection!" All eyes drilling into me, I forced myself to stay calm. "I didn't steal anything. You have no right to make me take off my clothes." She sneered, suddenly leaning close to my ear and whispering just loud enough for us to hear, "Right? Celine Anderson, do you really think you're the only heiress of the Anderson family?" "Your mom, Zoe Liebes, is just a homewrecker!" My mind went blank, and it felt like all the blood in my body had frozen solid. She looked at my pale face and smugly dropped the final bombshell: "My mom, Riley Bourbon, is Bob Anderson's legitimate wife. So, you, a secret daughter, what...
