Blind to My Heart

"Jesse, did you 'mistake someone' again? Was it your secretary or your assistant this time?" He chuckled softly on the other end of the phone, "Honey, you know I have face blindness." "Face blindness?" I stared at the surveillance footage on the tablet showing him kissing a strange woman. "Then why have you never mistaken your ex, Leila?" His breath caught abruptly in the receiver. I walked to the window, looked down at his recently parked car, and whispered into the phone, "Jesse, it's time to end your act." "Guess how long you can keep pretending if I hand over proof of your 'selective face blindness' to the board?" There was a deathly silence over the phone for a moment, then his voice turned sharply cold: "Nora, what do you know?" I smiled. "Secrets enough to destroy you. Like..."收起

Chapter 1 of "Blind to My Heart"

My name is Nora Quinn. I have been married to Jesse Franco for three years. To everyone else, he's a successful man. But only I know he suffers from prosopagnosia — face blindness. The first time I noticed something was wrong was just outside the pantry stall at his office. That day, I left work early, planning to pick him up from the company. As I neared the pantry, I heard strange sounds coming from inside the stall. I held my breath and quietly crept closer. Through the crack in the cubicle door, I saw Jesse Franco holding a young woman, kissing her. I recognized her—she was the new intern in his department. My heart sank instantly. I pushed the door open and rushed in, demanding to know what he was doing. Jesse saw me and frantically pulled the intern away. He dropped to his knees, grabbed my hand, his eyes full of innocence. "Nora, I'm sorry — I mistook her for you." "I thought she was you, truly, please believe me." I looked into his sincere eyes, my heart a whirlwind of emotions. His face blindness had been medically diagnosed. I sighed and, in the end, chose to trust him. But I never imagined this was only the start of a nightmare. Before long, I noticed his strange behavior again. That day, I returned from a business trip without telling him beforehand. I opened the door— the bedroom door was ajar, and laughter between a man and a woman drifted out. I trembled as I pushed the door open. What I saw hit me like a lightning strike. Jesse Franco and his female assistant lay tangled and disheveled on the bed. I was trembling with anger, unable to utter a single word. Jesse Franco saw me and panicked once again. He hurriedly got off the bed and knelt before me once more. "Nora, I didn't mean to do it." "I mistook someone again; she was wearing clothes just like the ones you wore last time." "I thought it was you coming back. Can you forgive me this once?" I watched as he repeatedly used his face blindness as an excuse, my disappointment growing deeper. But I still clung to a faint hope. Maybe I could find a way to make him remember me. Since then, I've been trying all kinds of methods. Every day, I wear the same style and color of clothes. I want him to recognize me by my clothes. But the results haven't been promising. He still sometimes calls out my name to someone else. Then, I came up with another idea. Every morning before I leave, I draw a small heart on my face. The red heart is very noticeable. I thought this way, he'd always be able to recognize me. But reality hit me hard again. That weekend, I had arranged to take a walk in the park with Jesse Franco. I got there early and sat on a bench, waiting for him. From afar, I saw him heading toward the park lawn. I thought he had seen me and was about to get up, but then I saw him walk over to a girl. That girl was very beautiful. Jesse Franco wrapped his arms around her, and they tumbled onto the grass. My heart sank completely. The heart mark on my face was still clearly visible. How could he mistake someone else again? I rushed over and shoved Jesse Franco aside. He saw me, and a flicker of surprise crossed his face. Then, the familiar look of guilt settled in again. "Nora, I'm sorry, I..." "You mistook her for me again, didn't you?" I cut him off, my voice heavy with fatigue and disappointment. Jesse nodded, still wanting to say something more. But I didn't want to hear it anymore. I turned and walked away, tears streaming down my face. I really don't know how much longer this kind of life can go on. I even started to question whether his prosopagnosia is real. But every time I catch his "sincere" gaze, I falter again. Maybe... I'm just imagining things. He was just gravely ill. I told myself this quietly. But that unease took root in my heart and slowly began to grow, like a seed. I knew I couldn't keep fooling myself like this. I had to uncover the truth.

He swept his hand across the flower rack; the sound of shattering glass exploded. "Darcy Lancaster!" I raised the wooden stick in self-defense. "Get out, and take your woman with you." He sneered as he stepped closer, "Seven years gone, and your temper's only grown. Remember how you betrayed me back then?" "Betrayed? You were the one who ruined my life first." The wooden stick slammed down with a whistle, blood pouring from his temple. "Sabrina Sinclair!" He staggered, grabbing the shelf. "You dare..." "What do I have to be afraid of?" "Why didn't you call me a dead weight when you were buying her limited-edition bags and slinging your arm around her shoulders?" He slammed the door open and stormed in. "Delete that post! Or you'll regret it!" "People are just telling the truth." I tapped the recording, and Lydia's cloying voice cut through the air like a knife. "Mr. Shaw, when are you going to divorce that frumpy wife?" Henry's face turned purple with rage. "You dared to investigate me?" "I just wanted to know if this family was worth it."...

That white luxury car I cherished most was driven out the door by his assistant, Susan, filled with people I didn't know, laughing so boldly. I picked up the phone, my voice so cold it sounded unfamiliar even to myself: "Follow that car and bring it back to me unharmed." My friend advised, "Maybe your husband allowed it?" I laughed, "Him? He doesn't have that kind of nerve yet." That night, Rory sat beside me, his tone reproachful: "Susan is just a young girl, playing around. Aren't you being too harsh?" I looked up at him and said each word clearly, "That is my car." He frowned, "She is my assistant. For my sake, can you not forgive her just this once?" I stood up, stared into his eyes, and finally asked the question I had been holding inside: "Rory, if one day you found that everything you rely on—your money, your car, your company—was all controlled by me, would...

The Name Carved in Error

I knelt at the end of the church's red carpet, holding the wedding ring high—engraved inside was "Reagan"—though the bride's name was Stacy. She tore off her veil with a fierce motion, her slap ringing out so sharply the stained glass seemed to tremble: "Your mother lies collapsed in the front row, and you have your first love engraved in the ring, Charles Jones—will you still go through with this marriage?" The moment the ambulance rushed in to take my mother away, I knew this wedding was over, and so were we. Three years later, holding my newborn daughter in the maternity ward corridor, I saw Stacy, soaked in blood, grin at me: "I sent her father to prison for you. Do you remember what you owe me?" I lowered my head to soothe the child, softly replying, "I remember, but the one whose life is owed is someone else; the one who owes you is your next life."收起
