A Rusted Love, A Life in Debt

2026-03-04

I once believed that the worn coin was our vow never to part. "When I get rich, Cindy Gilman," Evan Shaw said, pressing the coin into my palm, his eyes bright like stars, "I'll use it to marry you." Ten years later, dressed in suit and tie, he married my stepsister, Tina Leslie. He brought her to my shabby candied hawthorn shop, his voice flat: "Two skewers, please." I threaded the hawthorns and handed them over without looking up. "Fifteen a skewer, scan the code." He reached deep into his pocket and pulled out that old coin, its edges worn down heavily. "Cindy, do you still remember?" His voice was low, "It's what I owed you back then." I pushed his hand away, like shoving aside a pile of burning ashes. "I don't accept coins anymore," I said, "especially old ones."收起

Chapter 1 of "A Rusted Love, A Life in Debt"

The candied hawthorn shop in Flores City's old alley had just opened; the syrup was still bubbling in the pot. I held the bamboo skewer, threading bright red hawthorns, when familiar yet strange footsteps came from the door. Looking up, Even Shaw stood in the morning light, his suit crisp, the watch on his wrist catching the gleam—no longer the boy in a faded school uniform he once was. The woman linked to his arm was Tina Leslie—my stepsister. "Two skewers of candied hawthorns, please." Even Shaw's voice was low, his gaze lingering briefly on my face. I bowed my head, threading the hawthorns with a flat tone: "Fifteen a skewer, please scan to pay." He pulled an old coin from his pocket and placed it on the counter, its edges already worn. "Do you still remember this?" He rubbed the coin between his fingers. "This is the first skewer of candied hawthorns you treated me to back then. I still owe you one coin." My heart clenched sharply; it was a mark etched deep into my youth. "We don't accept cash anymore, especially old coins." I pushed his hand away, rejecting him coldly. At that moment, my son Michael ran out from the inner room, clutching my leg and shouting, "Mom, I want strawberry candied hawthorns." He looked up at Even Shaw, his eyes clear and pure—just like the young Even Shaw. Even's pupils suddenly contracted, his face instantly went pale. He stared at Michael for a long moment, lips moving but saying nothing. Tina laughed softly, linking her arm with his, her tone edged with teasing: "Oh, Cindy, look at you , living such a humble life now... and raising a fatherless kid all by yourself." "Tina." Even frowned sharply and scolded, but didn't pull away her hand. I picked up Michael, turning sideways to block his gaze. "Whether we live well or not, it's none of your business." Even Shaw fixed his gaze on Michael's eyes and brows, his Adam's apple moving as he swallowed, then finally took out his phone to scan and pay. He didn't take the coin but turned away with resolve, walking off with Tina. Michael pointed at the coin: "Mom, that man dropped a coin." I looked softly at the coin and said, "It's not ours, no need to pick it up."

My Doting Ex Boss

I rolled down the car window and stared at the figure bending over to pick up the exercise books. "Look up. State your name." He lifted his eyes, his voice as cold as ice. "Simon. None of your business." I twirled the diamond bracelet on my wrist and flipped a black card onto his exercise books. "Come with me. Money, power, a future—I'll give you everything." He brushed the black card away with his hand. "I can't accept the charity of Miss Scott." "Charity?" I scoffed. "There's nothing I can't get in this world—you included." He stood up straight. "You can try." I narrowed my eyes and tapped my fingertips against the car window. "I'll try then. Let's see how long you can keep this tough act up." He ignored me and turned to leave, but I called out to him. "Simon. Remember this day. From now on, I'm the one who holds your life in my hands." His steps...

Happiness is Never Denied

I was two months pregnant, but at the New Year's party, I heard my husband's childhood friend Penny smile and say: "I did more private things with Leo before." " My husband Leo blushed but didn't deny it. He just said casually, "That's in the past." I had intended to get a decent divorce, but unexpectedly I fell into a deeper conspiracy. Penny turned on the live stream and cried her eyes out. "Leo and I have been in love since childhood. It was always Annie who stood between us!" "She insulted me and even slandered me for stealing!" Everyone started to look down on me, and I became the mistress that all despised. What's even worse is that they came to the door with food and pretended to apologize. I drank the vegetable soup they made, but what I got in return was a severe abdominal pain. After that, the doctor told me, "There are a lot of substances...

You Killed Me, Then You Loved Me

My marriage contract was a reckless gamble—betting three years of my youth, betting on a child, betting that he would spare me a glance. "Joseph, if I'm pregnant, would you stay with me a little longer?" I pressed close to his ear, my voice sickeningly sweet. He shoved me away, his gaze cold as ice: "Bella, stop dreaming." That day, I overheard his phone call with Jasmine. "She can't get pregnant." He chuckled lightly, like he was talking about the weather, "That accident... I arranged it." I leaned against the wall, my nails digging into my palm. "Why?" I heard my own trembling voice. He turned around, looked at me, his eyes completely unfeeling: "Because you're not worthy." Later, when I handed him the divorce papers, he signed without hesitation. Seven days later, I was supposed to fly far away, but at the last moment, I called him— "Joseph, if I told you I'm pregnant with your child, would you...

After the 99th Confession

I stood in front of the tightly closed door, my palms drenched in sweat. Today was supposed to be the day I proposed to Calvin for the 100th time. My heart was filled with anticipation. "Anna, what are you here for again?" Calvin leaned against the doorframe, his eyes cold and a look of impatience tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Calvin, this is the 100th time. You said you'd marry me once I'd done it a hundred times." He let out a soft chuckle, his eyes full of sarcasm. "Don't be so naive. Those were just jokes." My heart plummeted suddenly, as if falling into an abyss. "Why? I've changed so much for you..." "That's just your own self-indulgent devotion," he said. Just then, a news alert popped up on my phone—Calvin had made a high-profile confession to Quincy. I froze in place, tears gushing out of my eyes. "Calvin, have you had enough?"收起

A Love Designed to Hurt

The phone rang—it wasn't Ethan. I hadn't even had time to react when the door was kicked open. They covered my mouth and dragged me into the car. I was locked in an abandoned warehouse for over ten hours, without eating and drinking, until Ethan burst in with the police. He held me tightly, his hands trembling, his voice quivering: "Elizabeth, don't be afraid, I'm here." After the rescue, he was tender and attentive, until I realized I was pregnant. When I told him the good news, he paused in surprise, then smiled, placing his palm gently over my belly: "I will take good care of both of you." But later, he handed me a paternity test report, his expression darkened. "Look at this." The conclusion on the report struck like a heavy blow—the child was not biologically related to him. "Impossible!" I gripped his arm. "This must be a mistake!"

Dump the Loser, Become the CEO

I was choking on the stench of the dirty Christmas stocking. When I yanked it out, Lucy was wearing my nightgown, with the limited-edition necklace bought with my parents' inheritance around her neck. "Alex Fisher, how dare she do this to me?" My voice was hoarse. "Lucy's just fooling around. Cut her some slack." He frowned. "Fooling around? Using my parents' money to buy a 'counterfeit' to curry favor with your mistress?" I pointed directly at the necklace. Lucy giggled coquettishly. "Alex has been fed up with you for ages. I'm his true love." "True love?" I stepped closer to him. "You tricked me into investing the inheritance to save the company, just to buy this crap?" He roared. "The money was for cash flow!" "Cash flow that requires a necklace and an haute couture priced at ten million?" I held up my phone. "I've got all the recordings and transfer receipts of you two." He raised his hand to...
