A Heaven Without You

2026-03-04

I fell from the eighteenth floor, yet began to float in midair. Looking down, I saw Julia White kneeling beside a pool of blood, her fingertip nearly touching my untied shoelace. She cried out my name, her voice breaking like shattered glass. When her spirit caught up with me, tears still glistened on her face. "Cyrus Lowry... we can finally—" "We can't." I cut her off; the little dog's spirit in my arms radiated a warm glow. She froze, her outstretched hand stiff in midair. "What?" "The heaven I'm heading to," I said, pointing to the pure light behind me, "has no place for you."收起

Chapter 1 of "A Heaven Without You"

Just as I finished arranging a pair of brown Oxford shoes on the shelf, the wind chime at the door jingled. Looking up, I saw Julia White's high heels step onto the entrance rug. Beside her was Giles Duke, their hands linked. Instinctively, I wanted to hide, but my body froze in place. Julia's gaze quickly landed on me, a cold smirk playing at her lips. "Well, well, isn't this Cyrus Lowry?" Her voice was soft, yet it seemed to freeze the very air in the shop. Giles leaned against the shelf, hands in his pockets, eyes full of scorn. "How did you wind up selling shoes? You weren't like this back then." He said slowly. I clenched the shoe brush tightly, saying nothing. Julia walked over to a pair of slender-heeled sandals, bent down, and pointed. "I want to try these on." I picked up the shoes, preparing to crouch down. "Wait." Julia suddenly spoke. "My feet are sensitive. You kneel and put them on for me." Everyone around turned to look, and my face immediately flushed. "Julia, there's no need for this." My voice trembled. "No need?" She raised her voice, "Back then, you let Giles suffer so much—what's this compared to that?" I thought of Mochi still waiting at the pet hospital for the medical fees, and my heart sank deeper. "I'll give it a try for you." I gritted my teeth and said. When my knee touched the cold floor, I heard a sharp intake of breath from others. Julia stretched out her foot, her tone arrogant: "Hurry up, don't waste my time." Giles was taking photos nearby, his smile never fading. I swallowed my humiliation and slowly put the shoe covers on her feet. A wave of dizziness washed over me, and I steadied myself against the shelf. Julia frowned, "Pathetic. You can't even handle something this simple." I said nothing, only wanting this humiliation to end quickly. When the end-of-shift bell rang, the store manager called me into the office. "Don't take what happened today to heart," he said. He handed me a glass of water. I shook my head, only wanting to know when the salary would be paid. "The salary is paid at the end of the month, but if you're in a hurry, I can advance you some." The store manager said. I thanked him, but in my mind, there was only one thought: to get my wages, pay Mochi's medical bills, and then find a quiet place to end it all. The pain from the terminal brain cancer grew more frequent; living had long since become torment.

"Survival of the fittest—that's the rule of the apocalypse!" Harry sneered. "Trash like you is just wasting air by being alive!" Before his words faded away, the howls of zombies suddenly erupted in the night. I clung to the shelf, watching as a face-missing zombie pounced at me. Suddenly, a sharp pain exploded in my head, and a faint blue light flickered at my fingertips. To my surprise, the zombie retreated obediently behind me, whimpering softly. "Wha... What is this?" When I brought Quentin Hill some soup, the moment I pushed the door open, Marianne Ray was grinning as she stuck a QR code on my forehead. I ripped off the paper—"Damaged goods on clearance." Blood boiled in my head like a buzzing storm. "Quentin!" I looked straight at my husband. He just frowned and wiped his hands. "Marianne was joking, why are you taking it so seriously?" That night, Marianne Ray posted the photo of me with the QR code on her social media, captioned: "Expired secondhand goods, who wants it?" Quentin Hill's comment was right under it, just two words: "No thanks." At that moment, I heard a string inside my mind snap with a sharp "pop." I picked up my phone and called the bank manager, my voice so steady it felt strange even to me: "Freeze all the supplementary cards I issued to Quentin Hill." Then I dialed another number and said on the other end, "Bring the...

I stood at the entrance of the office building, clutching the dismissal notice, when a video from Melody suddenly popped up on my phone: "Bruce Lewis is getting married next week. You're welcome to witness this happiness." Seven years of restraint crumbled in an instant, and the old scar on my wrist felt hot—it was left there seven years ago. "Nora, Bruce stood up at the wedding!" A colleague's message had just appeared when a hand suddenly grabbed me. I turned around to see Bruce's bloodshot eyes. He was gasping for breath: "I've been looking for you for seven years." "Mr. Lewis, we don't know each other well." I wrenched myself free from his grip. "My mom forced you back then, and I had no idea!" He held out a bank card. "I'll make it up to you. Let's start over!" "Make it up to me?" I laughed until tears came. "With my mom's life? Or with these seven years...
