Chapter 1 of "The Earthquake"

Today marks the third anniversary of my marriage to Jim Luke. Last week, when he left for the neighboring city to discuss a project, he gently touched my hair and promised to bring me back a limited-edition pearl brooch. I'm a civil affairs reporter at the city television station. The news from the earthquake area just flashed on the news app, and clutching my press badge, I rushed straight to the editor-in-chief's office. "I'm applying to go to the frontline. I have experience, and I... I want to look for my husband." I whispered that last part. The editor hesitated for a moment, glanced at my reddened eyes, and finally nodded. He sent Peter to go with me and even handed me a rescue suit: "Stay safe, and call me anytime if you need anything." As the car headed toward the earthquake area, the radio kept broadcasting the latest casualty figures. My hands gripping the phone were drenched in sweat; I dialed Jim Luke's number over and over, but all I got was a busy signal. The highway was jammed with rescue trucks and ambulances, red police lights flashing in the rain, stabbing into my eyes. Peter comforted me beside me: "Ella, Jim's a lucky man; he'll definitely be okay." I said nothing, just stared at the ruins rushing by, my heart clenched tight, struggling to breathe. At the edge of the earthquake area, we showed our press passes before they allowed us in. Collapsed buildings were everywhere, the air thick with dust and the sharp scent of disinfectant, and people called out their loved ones' names, crying in the ruins. I split from Peter; he went to film the rescue efforts while I held Jim Luke's photo, questioning the rescue workers one by one. "Have you seen this man? Around 1.85 meters tall, wearing a gray suit and carrying a silver-gray pen." After nearly two hours of asking, no one had seen him. I approached a section of ruins that had just been half cleared when suddenly, among twisted steel bars, a flash of silver caught my eye. I ran over, crouched down, and started clearing away the rubble; my fingers were cut by sharp stones, and blood immediately began to seep out. It was that pen—the limited edition I hunted through three stores to buy for his birthday last year. He said he wanted to carry it to every meeting from now on. "Here! Maybe here!" I shouted toward the rescue team not far away, my voice trembling. The rescuers ran over, wanting to help with tools, but I was already digging with my hands like a madwoman.

Seven Years in Pain, a Lifetime in Vain

I stood at the entrance of the office building, clutching the dismissal notice, when a video from Melody suddenly popped up on my phone: "Bruce Lewis is getting married next week. You're welcome to witness this happiness." Seven years of restraint crumbled in an instant, and the old scar on my wrist felt hot—it was left there seven years ago. "Nora, Bruce stood up at the wedding!" A colleague's message had just appeared when a hand suddenly grabbed me. I turned around to see Bruce's bloodshot eyes. He was gasping for breath: "I've been looking for you for seven years." "Mr. Lewis, we don't know each other well." I wrenched myself free from his grip. "My mom forced you back then, and I had no idea!" He held out a bank card. "I'll make it up to you. Let's start over!" "Make it up to me?" I laughed until tears came. "With my mom's life? Or with these seven years...

The Arrow of Love

The moment I gripped the wooden bow at ten, I knew archery and Eddie would be the passions I'd never be able to let go of. Eddie was the legendary captain of the archery team, my first mentor, and my love. He once held my wrist and said, "Calm your heart, let the arrow follow your breath." To stand beside him, I trained for three months, forging thick calluses on my palms. But when the selection results came out, I was five points short. "Eddie, just this once, could you put in a good word for me with the Selection Team? I swear I'll give it my all from now on—I won't ever let you down!" But he pushed my hand away, his eyes cold as ice: "Cindy, no. Archery can't have shortcuts—if you are not good enough, you are simply not." I stared at his sharp profile, my heart pricking like it was being stabbed. I thought he was...

I was a celebrity with three Best Actress trophies in hand and a net worth of over 100 million. Ten years ago, on that sweltering summer afternoon, in a corner of the film set in Collywood City, there was a young extra named Jim in a faded costume. The light in his eyes was blazing bright. I revised scripts for him, found him mentors, and paved the way with my connections. I watched him rise from an unknown actor in web dramas to the very peak of A-list stardom, step by step. For our tenth anniversary, I booked the dressing room at the film and television base. I set out his favorite red wine and hid the gift I had been preparing for half a year, wanting to give him a surprise. But behind the slightly ajar door, ambiguous sounds stabbed at my eardrums, making them ache. The moment I pushed the door open, Yvonne's disheveled hair and the shirt...

Blind to My Heart

"Jesse, did you 'mistake someone' again? Was it your secretary or your assistant this time?" He chuckled softly on the other end of the phone, "Honey, you know I have face blindness." "Face blindness?" I stared at the surveillance footage on the tablet showing him kissing a strange woman. "Then why have you never mistaken your ex, Leila?" His breath caught abruptly in the receiver. I walked to the window, looked down at his recently parked car, and whispered into the phone, "Jesse, it's time to end your act." "Guess how long you can keep pretending if I hand over proof of your 'selective face blindness' to the board?" There was a deathly silence over the phone for a moment, then his voice turned sharply cold: "Nora, what do you know?" I smiled. "Secrets enough to destroy you. Like..."收起

When I opened my eyes again, the disinfectant still stung my nose, but I had returned to the day he took me to a private hospital for a prenatal checkup. He smiled, pointing at the baby mural, with the woman who caused my difficult labor standing behind him. I pressed my abdomen and whispered, "Mason Young, let's get a divorce."收起
