"Get it away! It smells so shabby and rank. Is this all your parents can give—cheap stuff like this?" "They spent time stewing it at 3 a.m. They know you've been working overtime and..." "Working overtime?" He suddenly answered his phone, his tone softening instantly as if it could melt into water. "Fiona, your stomach feels unwell? Don't worry. I'll ask my assistant to send medicine right away and order some light congee for you. Be good." After hanging up, he glanced at the divorce agreement in my hand. "Don't bring things like this to the company. Just let the assistant handle it." "That's my divorce petition! Dylan, do you really care so little about our five-year marriage?" "Care? What else can you do besides doing laundry and cooking? How long do you think you and Alex could survive without me?" "You think I can't live without you? Do you really believe I don't know about you and Fiona?" "So what if you know? At least she understands me—unlike you, who's full of the rustic from some small town." I slammed the insulated food bag onto the coffee table. "Dylan, I've had enough of this marriage! But mark my words—I'm not a quitter." "Oh? What else do you plan to do then?"收起

Chapter 1 of "Winning My Life Back After Divorce"

The sensor light in the entryway flickered on and off. I carried the heavy insulated bag, my fingertips numb from the cold wrapped in the cloth. Inside the bag were lamb ribs my parents had butchered at three in the morning—picked the tenderest racks, stewed for a solid four hours, then frozen and sent with care. "Dylan, you home?" I slipped on my shoes and called out toward the living room. Only the sound of tapping keys replied. Dylan sat on the couch, laptop on his lap, the screen's light casting cold shadows on his hard profile, jaw clenched tight. He didn't even look up, just frowned: "Move it away, it smells like mutton." My hand froze in midair, the warmth inside the insulated bag slowly seeping through the fabric, but it couldn't warm my cold fingertips. "This is my parents' way of showing they care," I softened my voice, trying to sound calm, "They know you've been working late every night lately, and said mutton's good for your health, so they specially made this soup." "Care?" Dylan finally stopped what he was doing and looked at me, his eyes full of undisguised sarcasm. "Cindy, your parents can't do much—besides sending these worthless things, what else can they do?" My throat tightened, like something was stuck in it, and I couldn't squeeze out a single word. Married for five years, and he's always been like this. He despises me for coming from a small county town, despises my parents' earthy smell, despises the gifts they send, saying they're not fancy enough for his Mr. Jones status. His phone vibrated in his pocket, shattering the silence in the living room. He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and all the scorn on his face disappeared without a trace, replaced by a softness I'd never heard before. "Fiona, what's wrong?" He picked up the phone, his voice soft and low, a world apart from how he had just spoken to me. "Stomach upset? Don't worry, don't rush," he said, brow furrowed, voice full of concern. "I'll have Assistant Clark bring you some stomach medicine right away, and order some light porridge. Just wait there quietly, don't move around." "Okay, once I'm done with this, I'll come find you. Be good." When he hung up, a faint smile lingered at the corner of his mouth, but the moment he turned to face me, that smile faded instantly, replaced by cold, indifferent silence. "Company stuff?" I asked softly, though I already knew the answer deep down. "None of your business." He stood up to leave, and a stack of papers slipped from his pocket, scattering across the floor. I bent down to pick them up, and the title on the top paper caught my eye — Divorce Agreement. That was the one I had gathered the courage to hand in at his company last week. I thought he'd at least glance at it, but he didn't take it seriously and just stuffed it carelessly back into his pocket. He glanced at the papers in my hand, expressionless, his tone casual as if discussing something trivial: "Stuff like this, don't bring it to the company again. Just let Assistant Clark handle it." "Dylan Jones, this is my divorce petition." I clenched my fingers so tightly my knuckles went white, my voice carrying a faint, almost unnoticed tremor. "Got it." He opened the door and his footsteps quickly faded down the hall, leaving behind a light, careless remark, "Not coming back for dinner tonight." I stood alone in the empty living room, the insulated bag resting on the coffee table, the lamb soup inside slowly cooling — just like our five years of marriage: warm at first, now frozen solid, never to warm up again.
