Chapter 1 of "The Fake Husband"

The screech of tires against the pavement shattered the dusk as I looked down, texting Leo Luke. The phone screen glowed, the input box still holding the words "waiting for you to come back and eat the pork rib stew I made," before the violent impact sent it flying the next second. My body slammed into the windshield like a kite with its string cut; a sharp pain pierced my forehead, and warm liquid streamed down my cheek. I reached out to grab the phone that had fallen onto the passenger seat; my fingertips just touched its cold surface when my consciousness faded into darkness. When I opened my eyes again, the sharp scent of disinfectant filled my nostrils; an IV line was inserted in my arm, and every movement sent waves of aching through my entire body. Outside, the sky was dull and gray; a nurse pushed a treatment cart by, her footsteps ringing clearly in the empty corridor. "Ms. Lincoln, you're awake?" The doctor in the white coat entered, holding the medical records, his expression grave. "Both your kidneys are severely damaged. The left one is completely necrotic and must be removed. Moreover, both your legs have suffered irreversible nerve damage. From now on, you may... never be able to stand again." The doctor's words pierced my eardrums like an ice pick. I suddenly glanced down at my legs beneath the blanket—they lay still, completely numb. Tears struck the white sheets, spreading into a small, damp stain. I opened my mouth but couldn't utter a sound. As the caregiver wiped my face, I seized the moment to ask about my phone. She paused, saying that only a shattered phone case was found at the car accident scene—the motherboard inside was badly burnt beyond recognition. Leo Luke's phone was no longer reachable. I asked the caregiver to turn on the phone for me; in the pinned chat, the last message was still mine—"Pork rib soup"—he hadn't had time to reply. Three days later, a man in a dark blue shirt entered the ward, carrying a thermal flask, his hair perfectly combed. With red eyes, he gripped my hand, his palm intentionally warm: "Wendy, I'm your husband, Felix Carter. Don't be afraid, I will save you." I gazed at his face—the unfamiliar features, the strange voice—but when he said the word "husband," his tone was so natural, as if rehearsed a thousand times.

"Natalie, the year's first blessing got at X Temple is not only Bruce Green's life-prolonging talisman, but also your destined tribulation. Are you certain you want to go for it?" asked my master. I clenched the fortune chart tightly in my hand. "The old man entrusted his family to me on his deathbed. I cannot let the Green Family fall into ruin in Bruce's hands." "He doesn't recognize you at all, and even treats you like a lowly ant. You've gone undercover in his company for three years, and saved him from danger three times. When has he ever looked at you squarely?" my master said. Bruce's icy words echoed vividly in my mind in an instant: "Natalie, stop pestering me with this feudal superstition. Whatever Stacy wants, I'll give her without a second thought." I ground my teeth and replied, "What I want is not his approval, but to keep my promise." My master handed me a peachwood hairpin....

That trust lasted five whole years. "Wendy, it's time to pay the tuition fees again. I haven't gotten my part-time salary yet..." "I've transferred the money to your card. Let me know if it's not enough." "Wendy, all my classmates wear designer brands. I feel a bit inferior..." "Send me your address. I'll mail you a few custom-made suits." "Wendy, I want to start a business. I'm short of three million in startup capital..." "It'll be in your account tomorrow." "Wendy, once the company stabilizes, I'll marry you in style!" "Okay. Adoption Scam in the Hospital Ward

The pungent smell of disinfectant pierced my nostrils sharply. I lay weakly in the VIP ward, a hollow ache gnawing at my lower abdomen—this was the seventh miscarriage in my five-year marriage. Squeak! The ward door was suddenly thrown open. Mario walked in holding a swaddle, his eyes flickering: "Jessica, this child has had a tough life. His mother is gone—will you adopt him?" I looked at that chubby pink little face, and my heart softened instantly: "I'll raise him." But that night, a conversation from the study hit me like a thunderbolt: "She can't even keep her own child. Raising one will keep her in line. Once I build a relationship with Alan, I'll file for divorce, and she'll have to leave with nothing." So this was all their scheme! Trembling all over, I pushed open the door and confronted them: "Is this child yours and Ruby's? You tricked me into adopting him just to make me leave with...

After He Knows My Dad Backs Him Up

I stood in front of the door to that private room—familiar yet unfamiliar. Taking a deep breath, I pushed it open slowly. "Well, isn't this Daisy? What a rare guest." Leo's repulsive voice rang out. "Mr. Shawn is now the boss of a listed company. If Daisy can be with him again, wouldn't she reach the top in one step?" I looked up, and my gaze met Gavin's eyes—the very ones I had once been obsessed with. But now, they were filled with nothing but strangeness and a sense of superiority. "I heard you opened a small art gallery. If you are short of money, you can just say so." He casually handed over a black card, and the condescending pity in his tone made me sick. "I don't need it," I replied coldly. "Back then, she begged you nonstop to marry her. Now even after the divorce, she still comes here to leech off your fame—she really has no...

On my 25th birthday, I held the engagement ring and waited for Mark. As soon as he walked in, he said, "Cindy, let's break up." "Why? I've already applied to transfer to your city!" I grabbed his arm, but he pulled away and showed me his Moments — a photo of him with a girl in white, captioned "For the rest of my life." "I'm tired. I have someone I like now." "You're ending our five-year relationship just like that?" I blocked the door and begged him through tears. "Don't make a scene." He pushed me aside. "If I don't like you, I just don't." When my father suddenly had a cerebral hemorrhage, I called him crying, "Please come see my dad. He treated you like his own son!" "We broke up. Your family's matters have nothing to do with me." The call ended, and when I dialed again, I found myself blocked. Later, at my father's funeral, he actually...
