When I Become His Family

2026-03-04

Inside the maternity ward, I endured soul-shattering pain, finally greeted by the cry of my daughter. Yet when the nurse brought this little baby to me, my heart was heavy with sorrow—the child's father, Alex, had left us forever. I never imagined that Daniel Collins, who once promised to care for us, would abandon my daughter and me for another woman, and then a kidnapping crisis would silently descend...收起

Chapter 1 of "When I Become His Family"

The corridor outside the maternity ward was so quiet that only the ticking of the clock on the wall could be heard. The autumn wind slipped through the half-open window, carrying the scent of phoenix tree leaves and a faint chill. I leaned against the cold wall, my hands clenched so tightly they turned white. The child in my womb seemed to sense my anxiety, occasionally giving a gentle kick. The nurse pushed open the door and poked her head in: "Family member, prepare yourself, it's coming soon." I nodded, but felt a tightness in my throat, unable to speak. Daniel Collins stood not far away, clutching a cup of coffee long since gone cold. His eyes were somewhat vacant, as if his mind was elsewhere. "Are you nervous?" I couldn't help but ask. He paused for a moment, then forced a faint smile: "A little." I said no more. Since Alex left, the conversations between Daniel Collins and me have always been brief and polite, yet separated by an invisible wall. My name was called from the maternity ward; as I was pushed inside, I glanced back. Daniel Collins simply nodded and did not follow me in. The labor was far longer than I had imagined. Each contraction felt like a blade twisting inside me; I gritted my teeth, my forehead drenched in cold sweat. Around me, the doctor's calm commands and the nurse's gentle reassurances echoed softly. "Push! Harder!" I lost track of time until a sharp, clear cry pierced the air. Completely drained, I collapsed on the delivery bed, tears streaming uncontrollably. The nurse held a rosy little life before me: "It's a girl, six pounds three ounces." I reached out to take her; my fingertip brushed her soft cheek, and in that instant, every pang of pain gave way to a profound and unfamiliar emotion. Her eyes were closed, her eyebrows curved delicately, and her nose was just like Alex's. "Nova." I whispered softly; the name rose from the depths of my heart, almost instinctively. At that moment, the phone on the bedside table began to vibrate. The screen lit up with the name "Daniel Collins." I pressed the answer button. His voice was breathless, as if he had just run: "Is the child safe?" "Safe. It's a daughter." I hesitated, "When... will you return?" There was silence on the other end for a few seconds, then the faint rustle of paper. "I'm still busy with company matters. I'll come back as soon as this is settled." His tone was gentle, "Get some good rest. I've already asked a nanny to come over and take care of you." I uttered a soft "Mm," then hung up the telephone. Outside the hospital room window, a few phoenix tree leaves fell, spinning as they drifted to the ground. I gazed at the child in my arms, an inexplicable ache suddenly swelling within me — Alex never got to see her with his own eyes.

No Way Back to Love

The flashbulbs flickered frantically. I clung to Caleb Lewis's hand, but my smile froze stiff on my face. The coldness from his fingertips seeped through the fabric of my formal dress, piercing straight to the marrow of my bones—much like the growing chill in our relationship. "Mrs. Lewis, how do you respond to the recent gossip about your husband?" A reporter's microphone was practically shoved in my face. Caleb suddenly tightened his grip on my wrist, his voice dropping to a warning whisper: "Don't say anything stupid." I turned to look at him, only to catch a fleeting glimpse of ruthlessness in his eyes. When we got home, he shoved my hand away abruptly: "Wear the haute couture I prepared for you at next week's charity gala." His words were a frigid command, as if he were speaking to a stranger. Late that night, the characters "Acute Leukemia" on the hospital diagnosis report stabbed at my eyes, making them ache....

No One Wins

The phone screen glowed faintly in the dead of night, once again a message from that familiar yet alien number: "Do you think you have won?" I walked barefoot to the liquor cabinet and poured myself half a glass of wine. Outside the floor-to-ceiling window, the city lights scattered like spilled diamonds. Charles Sinclair slept soundly in the bedroom, his breathing even and calm. How absurd—after sharing the same bed for ten years, it was only this morning that I discovered a woman's earring inside the lining of his suit—shaped like a gardenia, utterly unlike my taste. "Jane," he suddenly spoke from behind, startling me so that my fingertips trembled and the puck struck the rim of the glass. "Why aren't you asleep yet?" I turned around and swirled my glass, letting the amber liquid shield his probing gaze. "I was thinking about what Micah said today," I let my voice fill with exhaustion, "Am I such a failure as...

The Scorned Wife's Redemption

Standing in the rain, I held Snow in my arms in front of the Lynn Family's villa. The nanny Amy frowned as soon as she opened the door. "Sophia? What are you doing here?" Hugo Lynn stroked Snow, his eyes cold. "Who let you in?" "Returning the cat." I held it out to him, and Snow immediately leaped into his arms. Rachel looped her arm through his, her smile sharp with malice. "Still stuck in the shadow of your divorce, are you?" I turned to leave, but Hugo called after me. "Rachel and I are getting engaged next month. I won't send you an invitation—don't want to ruin your mood." I glanced back, sneering. "Congratulations. Birds of a feather flock together." Rachel lost her composure at once. "You were the one who cheated back then..." "You drugged me and faked those photos!" I pulled out the surveillance screenshots. "Did you really think he'd never find out?" Hugo clenched his fists...

In my past life, I fought tooth and nail to raise my "younger brother," supporting him through college. Predictions of My Unborn Child

I caressed my swollen belly; the seven-month pregnancy felt heavy and full. The bank card under the pillow held the last lifeline of our family. "Mom, hurry and buy the funds and stocks! They'll surge tomorrow for sure!" A childish voice cut in abruptly, laced with an eerie urgency. That voice! In my past life, I trusted it, poured everything we had into it, only to end up with a stock market crash, company bankruptcy, my husband becoming a vegetable, my son dying a tragic death, and finally being pushed off a high-rise by my mother-in-law. "Mom, hurry up! Use the money to treat Harry and help Dad out of the pinch!" It kept urging me. "Okay, I'll do as you say." The voice fell silent at once, as if satisfied with my obedience. Little did it know that the debts from my past life would be repaid with interest in this one! At dawn, I clutched Kevin's stock account...

My Presumed-Dead Ex Is Dating My Sister

A gun barrel pressed against my lower back, and a familiar voice said, "Lydia, don't look back." I clenched the martyr's certificate, my thumb brushing the character "Felix": "It's been three years. How dare you show up! Did you forge the death notice back then?" His grip tightened: "It was for the mission. Forget me—it's for the best for both of us." "Forget you?" I spun around sharply. "I've guarded your 'ashes' for three years, and now you're going to marry Mindy?" His eyes darkened: "Lydia, there's more to this. I can't explain." "More to this means watching me suffer, watching her provoke me?" I touched the scar on his neck. "You got this saving me. Can you forget that too?" He stiffened. Mindy's footsteps echoed in the corridor. He pinned me against the wall: "Don't expose the past, or else—" I cut him off: "Or else kill me, and forge another death notice?"
