Two Bowls of Noodles

2026-03-03

At two in the morning, I rushed out of the emergency room holding my older brother's newborn twins, only to be mistaken for a freeloading mistress at my husband's trendy restaurant. A bowl of crab roe noodles costing 180, the waitress threw me to the ground twice and then tried to extort 88,000 from me. She smashed my cell phone, pushed my niece, laughing like a madwoman: "Charles Clark has long been mine!" I shielded the babies, blood dripping down my arm, and when I looked up, I saw my husband walk in— At that moment, I decided I would no longer be the gentle wife; I would make them pay back every penny, with interest.收起

Chapter 1 of "Two Bowls of Noodles"

My name is Windy Lynn, and I'm a nurse in the Emergency Department at the City Hospital. After pulling three night shifts in a row, the head nurse finally granted me two days off. I stepped out of the hospital just before dawn, the sky faintly lightening and the air carrying the crisp chill of early autumn. I wrapped my coat tighter, wanting nothing more than to go home and sleep deeply. But less than two hours after I'd lain down, the doorbell rang urgently. Peering through the peephole, I saw my older brother Mike Lynn's newborn twins—Dylan and Lydia. The two little ones stood on their tiptoes, faces pressed against the glass, like two eager, anxious kittens. I sighed and opened the door. They burst in like runaway cannonballs. Dylan grabbed the hem of my pajamas, swinging it: "Aunt, the TV said Mr. Clark's restaurant has a new crab roe noodles flavor. We want to try it!" Lydia nodded, holding up a crumpled flyer in her little hand. It showed golden, glossy noodles sprinkled with bright green scallions—truly tempting. These two kids are the pride and joy of my older brother and sister-in-law, and usually the closest to me. How could I possibly refuse? I ruffled their soft little hair. "Alright, change your clothes and I'll take you out." Charles Clark's "H Restaurant" has become a trendy spot recently, tucked deep in an old alley. Its gray brick and tile facade is adorned with red lanterns, and when you push the door open, wind chimes tinkle, evoking a vivid charm in the Southern Part. I held Lydia in my arms while Dylan tugged at my shirt. As soon as we stepped inside, a waitress led us to a window seat. The rosewood table shone brightly, draped with an off-white tablecloth. Outside the window, an old wall was covered in ivy, and every now and then, the ring of a bicycle bell sounded as someone rode past. The menu was styled like a traditional stitched book, releasing a faint scent of ink when opened. The children's portion of crab roe noodles was priced at 180—not cheap—but seeing the eager look in the kids' eyes, I still ordered two. "Auntie, aren't you going to eat?" Dylan tilted his head and blinked his eyes, dark as black grapes. "Auntie's not hungry. Just watching you all eat is enough." I smiled and brushed the stray hairs from his forehead. Dylan leaned on the windowsill, tracing the outline of cars on the glass with his finger, murmuring, "That bus has two floors." Lydia was fascinated by the celadon tableware on the table; her little hand lightly tapped the rim of the bowl, giggling at the clear, crisp sound. About twenty minutes later, the waitress brought over two bowls of noodles. The steaming hot scent of rich crab filled the air. Golden crab oil coated the delicate noodles, topped with a soft-boiled egg and sprinkled with chopped scallions and white sesame seeds—an incredibly tempting sight. "Be careful, it's hot." I helped them cool the noodles by gently blowing on them. Dylan, eager and impatient, took a big spoonful, instantly smearing bright orange crab roe at the corner of his mouth, like a little mischievous kitten. Lydia copied her older brother, taking small bites with her eyes squinting into crescent moons. Before long, Dylan pushed the bowl toward me: "Aunt, it's not enough." His little belly was bulging, yet he kept staring at the noodles on the next table. I waved to call the waiter, and Lily Carter—the one who had shown us to our seats—came over. She wore a pink uniform, her hair perfectly neat, but there was little smile on her face.

I pushed open the study door; moonlight, sharp as a blade, sliced through the still-illuminated screen Cameron Jones was gazing at. That phrase, "The car's dashboard glows hot at midnight," made my pupils contract sharply—he had forgotten the car maintained a constant temperature. I lifted the warm milk I had prepared for him; the bottom of the cup chimed softly, like a countdown. In the next moment, I heard myself say: Cameron Jones, the game has begun.收起

Clutching the contract still warm from the printer, the moment I pushed open his office door, my blood froze. "Cedric, is this the overtime you were talking about?" He slowly pushed the woman in his arms aside, straightened his tie, and spoke with a dismissive tone, as if brushing off someone unimportant: "Genevieve, don't make a scene. We were just discussing work." "Does discussing work require being this close? Does it require you to loosen your tie?" My voice shook, not from sadness, but from the fire burning inside me. He frowned, his usual impatience showing: "Can't you be more sensible? Go home." I looked at him and suddenly felt that the face I had loved for so many years was terrifyingly unfamiliar. I bent down to gather the scattered documents, walked to the door, and then stopped—without looking back. "Cedric," my voice as cold as ice, "you will regret this." He probably thought it was just another empty threat...

I gripped the thermos handle tightly, my knuckles turning white. Laughter drifted from the hospital ward—it was Evelyn Carter's, clear and sharp, mixed with her words, "Reed, bring cake this afternoon." I looked down at the porridge I had simmered for two hours and suddenly found it laughable. Perhaps I am the only one in this world who mistakes their charity for love, their indifference for family.收起

A girl's soft laughter came through his phone, and his tone instantly softened: "Be good, wait for me." After hanging up, his glare snapped back to me: "Don't touch Rose Xavier, or else—" "Or what?" I cut him off, "To stop my sister's medicine? Raymond Shane, that's all you're good for." "Go ahead and try." He leaned in close, his breath hot against my ear.收起

The smell of alcohol in the private room mingled with a pungent perfume, choking me and making my throat tight. Mr. Wilson patted my shoulder: "Henry, it's not worth it to be such a yes-man." I downed the full glass of wine, my throat burning with pain. But Whitney sneered: "Henry, you look so disgusting like this." "I'm doing all this for you," I said, clenching my fists. "For me?" She suddenly stood up, hooked her arm around Mike who had just walked in, and disdain practically oozed from her eyes and brows. "I was just using you to pass the time. The cold river water seeped into my collar, while someone on the bank shouted, "Stella said Daniel is a threat—he must be eliminated!" A memory from five years ago suddenly came crashing into my mind: Stella standing right in front of me, saying, "The head of the Greenwood Clan can keep you safe. Go with him." "That old man is a pervert! Don't you know that?" I stared at this woman—whom I had mentored for ten years and been married to for three—"You're betraying me just for wealth and status?" "Charles said this is the only way out," she avoided my gaze. Charles—the man who had lived off my opera troupe! I laughed until tears streamed down my face. "You two are in this together to plot against me? I saved you from the snow, taught you how to sing opera, and this is how you repay me?" "Either leave now, or don't blame us for being ruthless," Charles burst...
