Grudges and Loves on Stage

2026-03-03

The cold river water seeped into my collar, while someone on the bank shouted, "Stella said Daniel is a threat—he must be eliminated!" A memory from five years ago suddenly came crashing into my mind: Stella standing right in front of me, saying, "The head of the Greenwood Clan can keep you safe. Go with him." "That old man is a pervert! Don't you know that?" I stared at this woman—whom I had mentored for ten years and been married to for three—"You're betraying me just for wealth and status?" "Charles said this is the only way out," she avoided my gaze. Charles—the man who had lived off my opera troupe! I laughed until tears streamed down my face. "You two are in this together to plot against me? I saved you from the snow, taught you how to sing opera, and this is how you repay me?" "Either leave now, or don't blame us for being ruthless," Charles burst in with a group of burly men, a wooden stick clenched in his hand. I jumped out of the window and plunged into the river, and by some miracle, a cargo ship rescued me. Five years later, I was performing at a theater in the Capital when I saw Stella walking into the private box, arm in arm with Charles. She rushed over to grab me. "Daniel! I've been looking for you for five years. I want to make amends!" I pushed her away. "Make amends? With the life of my daughter Nora?" Charles roared from the side, "You lowly actor—don't ask for trouble!" I fixed my gaze on them and sneered. "What you owe me, and what you owe Nora... you'll pay it back sooner or later."收起

Chapter 1 of "Grudges and Loves on Stage"

The icy river water bore a piercing coldness, slipping through the collar to the flesh; every inch of skin felt as if stung by needles. In the fog of semi-consciousness, the laughter from the shore pierced my ears—those voices sharp and cruel, like poisoned silver needles stabbing repeatedly at my temples. "There's no escape; the stretch of river ahead is riddled with hidden reefs. Even if he can swim, it's useless." "Stella Lopez said that Daniel Shaw is nothing but a curse, and the sooner he is dealt with, the better." "Indeed, if it were not for Stella Lopez's soft heart saving him back then, he would have frozen to death in the snow. Yet, in the end, he turned out to be an ungrateful scoundrel." I struggled desperately in the water, letting the current carry me downstream. The chill in my heart was sharper than the river's, yet a flicker of unyielding will to survive still burned within me — I could not die, absolutely could not perish by the schemes of those two. That rainy night five years ago swirled vividly in my mind, the scene as clear as if it had happened only yesterday. "Daniel Shaw, just listen to me this once — the Hall master of the Greenwood Clan can keep our entire family safe." Stella Lopez stood before me, her voice tinged with a note of pleading, yet in her eyes, there was not a trace of guilt. I looked at her—the woman I had nurtured for ten years, taught drama for five, and been married to for three—and felt as if all the blood in my body was about to freeze. "Stella, do you not know that old man is notoriously perverse? Are you unaware of how many lives he has stained with blood?" "But Charles Green said this is the only way out." She avoided my gaze, yet her tone was resolute, as if she had already accepted this path as inevitable. Charles Green, my brother-in-law by marriage, the man who depends on my family's opera troupe for his livelihood. I couldn't help but laugh, laughing until tears welled up and streamed down my face, mingling with the rain—both salty and bitter. "So you all conspired to send me away in exchange for your wealth and glory? Stella Lopez, am I truly worth so little in your heart?" "Daniel Shaw, I did it for your own good." Stella Lopez stepped forward, trying to take my hand; her fingertips barely brushed my sleeve. I suddenly shook off her hand with such force that she staggered backward. "Don't touch me! Stella Lopez, I saved you from the bitter cold, taught you the arts of singing, reciting, acting, and combat, treated you like a precious gem—And this is how you repay me? Trading my life for your future?" Her face turned pale, her lips twitched, yet she stubbornly said, "At this point, words are useless. Either you go with the Hall master, or..." "Or what?" I fixed my gaze on her eyes, trying to find even the faintest trace of hesitation, but all I saw was cold indifference. "Or don't blame us for forgetting old favors." Charles Green's voice came from outside the door, followed by two brutish men wielding wooden clubs—clearly intent on enforcing their will. I knew in my heart that they were determined to sacrifice me, exchanging me for everything they desired. To remain inside meant being forcibly dragged away as a gift to the Hall master of the Greenwood Clan—an ordeal more humiliating than death; while the river outside the window, though swift and perilous, still concealed a faint hope of survival. I clenched my fists, and while their attention was fixed on Stella Lopez, I suddenly pushed open the window and plunged out. Outside the window roared the torrent; the icy water instantly swallowed me, sweeping away the last vestige of my lingering affection for Stella Lopez. I struggle amidst the waves; even when the currents leave my head dizzy, even when my limbs have long been frozen stiff, I grit my teeth and fight on—I do not want to die. I want to live to witness their downfall, to make them pay for today's betrayal. I thought I might be injured by a hidden reef or swept to the riverbed by the current, but as long as there is breath in me, I will never give up. But heaven was merciful; I was rescued by a passing cargo ship. The captain, a kind-hearted man, seeing that I still had life, gave me hot soup and thereby saved my life.

A Reckoning Deferred

The gilded envelope slid across the desk toward me. The lawyer's voice was flat and emotionless: "Ms. Scott, Mr. Charles' inheritance gift agreement." I gripped my coffee spoon tight: "He's not even dead yet, and you're in such a hurry to divide his estate?" "He has late-stage pancreatic cancer. Only three months left. He just wants to see you one last time." He handed over a photo. The man in it was a gaunt shadow of his former self. Hatred surged through me. I slammed the agreement down: "Tell him I don't care about his money. And I definitely don't want to see him." My phone suddenly rang. His mother's sobs cut through the line like a knife: "Whitney, Charles is coughing up blood again! If you don't come now, you'll never see him alive again!" "See him?" I thought of that snowy night five years ago. I'd knelt before him, begging for help with Nancy clinging to life in...

Five years ago, I pushed open the door to my home and saw them tangled together, their clothes in disarray. "What are you doing?" Dylan River stood up, a defiant look on his face. "Reed, Jennifer and I truly love each other." "She is my wife!" Jennifer George avoided my gaze. "Let's get a divorce. Actually, Dylan and I have been together for a year." Now, upon reuniting, she whispered softly, "Dylan and I have come to your place, hoping to see you." "Reed, there was a misunderstanding back then—" "Misunderstanding?" I pulled my hand away, my voice firm and resolute, "Threatening me with my mother's grave to force me to sign the divorce papers—is that really a misunderstanding? Ruining my life, stepping over my pain to climb higher—is that what you call a misunderstanding?" I stared at them, each word weighed with five years of concealed accusation: "You came here today to harm me again because you think I'm...

But do you think this money is enough to fill the hole in the Lewis Group's project?" Her face dropped instantly. "How dare you threaten me?" "Threaten is too strong a word." I pulled out my phone and waved it lightly. "I just finished chatting with Daniel. He's quite interested in your bidding reserve price." "You dare collude with that illegitimate kid!" Luna shrieked. "I'll add another ten million! Cut ties with him—now!" "Fifteen million total? Done." I pocketed my phone, my gaze turning cold. I gripped the schedule tightly, holding back my anger: "Everything is set. You want to postpone now?" "He's my brother!" she shouted. Then, her brother Drake Woods' weak, deliberate voice came through the phone: "Tina, don't make things hard for Michael. I shouldn't have woken up now..." Tina Woods immediately cut him off with a pang of pain, then turned coldly to me and said, "Michael, the wedding has to be postponed! If not, I'm not going to marry you! You need to come to the hospital right now and apologize to Drake!" I looked at the wedding invitations we had painstakingly prepared over half a year and felt completely crushed.
