The Color of Regret

"Honey, I want oranges." William Xavier's voice came through the phone: "Okay, I'll get some after work." But what I received wasn't happiness—it was the strawberry hairpin from his pocket. "It's for a female colleague." His eyes darted away. Late at night, I unlocked his mobile phone. Pinned chats jumped sharply into view. "William, I really like the hairpin!" "If you like it, I'll buy you another next time." My fingers trembling, he suddenly woke up: "Stella?" I raised my mobile phone; the light from the screen illuminated his ghostly pale face. "Let's get a divorce." He suddenly grabbed my wrist. "Let me explain..." "Explain what?"收起

Chapter 1 of "The Color of Regret"

The burning sensation in my stomach flared up again. I touched my flat belly, hiding a three-month-old life inside. Lately, I've been suddenly craving snacks, and today, I was especially eager for oranges. The thought of the sweet and sour juice bursting on my tongue made my mouth water. William Xavier was a surgeon at the city center hospital, so busy he barely had time to rest. But I still called him. "Honey, can you bring me some oranges after work?" I tried to keep my voice gentle. Hurried footsteps sounded from the other end of the line. "Okay, got it." Dinner was reheated three times before William Xavier finally dragged his weary self home. My eyes lit up as I stared at his hands—empty. "Where are the oranges?" I couldn't help but ask. William Xavier paused, then wore an apologetic look. "Sorry, there was an extra surgery today. I forgot." I felt a pang of disappointment but still nodded. "It's okay, maybe next time." He took off his white coat and casually threw it on the sofa. A small pink box slipped out of his pocket. I bent down to pick it up. The moment I opened it, my heart felt like it had been stabbed with an ice pick. It was a strawberry-shaped hairpin, the rhinestones flashing with a sharp glare. Not my style, nor anything I'd ever asked for. "What's this?" My voice shook slightly. William Xavier's eyes flickered. "Oh, it's for a female colleague. She asked me to help pick it up." I didn't ask any further; the answer was already clear in my mind. At night, William Xavier was sleeping soundly. I picked up the phone he had left on the bedside table. I unlocked it with the password, and the screen lit up. The pinned chat wasn't with me. It was with a girl named Debra Quinn, her profile picture a young woman in a white coat. Their chat was filled with messages. "William, the hairpin is so beautiful, thank you~" "I'm glad you like it. I'll buy you another if I see something nice next time." "William, you're so good to me!" "Silly girl." Followed by a sticker of a girl rubbing her head. I scrolled down and saw a photo of them together. In the hospital corridor, Debra Quinn linked arms with William Xavier, her smile radiant. There was another photo, taken in a restaurant, where William Xavier was cutting steak for her. The date was just last week. He said he was working late that day. The craving for the orange in my stomach suddenly disappeared, leaving only a storm of nausea. I shook William Xavier awake. He groggily opened his eyes. "What's wrong?" "Let's get a divorce." I said calmly. William Xavier's drowsiness vanished instantly. "What did you say? You must be joking." "I'm not joking." I threw the mobile phone in front of him. "How long have you and Debra Quinn been seeing each other?" His face instantly went pale. A night without sleep. William Xavier spent the whole night explaining, saying he was just looking out for a new colleague, nothing inappropriate. I didn't listen to a single word. Those intimate messages and photos spoke louder than any excuse. At dawn, William Xavier left. I curled up on the sofa, hands on my belly, tears silently falling. Child, what am I supposed to do? Around noon, William Xavier came home. He was carrying a large bag of oranges, each one plump and bright. "Stella, look, I bought the oranges you wanted most." His voice bore a tone of pleading. He sat beside me, carefully peeling an orange. The fresh scent of the orange peel wafted around, but I had lost all appetite. He held the peeled orange to my lips. "Here, try it. It's really sweet." I turned my head away, refusing it. "Stella, I know I was wrong," he said, putting down the orange and taking my hand. "I shouldn't have forgotten to buy you oranges, nor gotten so close to Debra." "Give me one more chance, okay? For the sake of our child." Mentioning our child softened my heart a little more.

"Jane, my company has gone bankrupt, and Ryan's leukemia... only that one million-dollar prize can save him." Henry Gordon knelt before me, his eyes red and swollen, clutching our son Ryan Gordon's medical record. Just because of this, I transformed from a white-collar worker into a wild survivor. For thirty days, drinking muddy water, eating roasted bugs, and surviving near-fatal fevers—I held on by picturing my son's pale face. It wasn't until I was hospitalized with a high fever that I overheard, right outside the ward, my "critically ill" son Ryan's voice. "Dad, won't Mom find out? I'm about to break under this act!" Henry Gordon sneered, "Relax. After one month of surviving in the wild, she'll be out of her mind." "Once we get the money, we'll immediately flee the country with Bailey!" So his company wasn't bankrupt, and my son wasn't sick—they just wanted to trade my life for their own freedom. My face drained of color in...

After I Died

On the seventh day after my death, Frederick James' first love, Nancy Dash, who had been "dead" for three years, was resurrected. They wept tears of joy and embraced passionately. The assistant reported in a trembling voice: "The police have found traces of Miss Limbaugh..." He flicked the ash from his cigarette, sneering, "It must be the remains." At that moment, it was as if he were choking me again, his roar from three years ago ringing in my ears: "Why didn't you die instead!" At the police station, he stared at the jade bracelet in the photo of "my" corpse and suddenly erupted into a mad laugh: "You expect me to fall for this trick?" "Her life has nothing to do with me." In a shadowed corner where no one could see, Nancy Dash cuddled close to him, a cold, triumphant smirk playing on her lips: "That idiot Cindy Limbaugh—no one even claimed her body after she died."收起

Three years of companionship, and all the resources my family had poured into him—only to be met with betrayal. "We're done. I won't invest another penny in your company." Cornered, he resorted to desperation and sent masked men to kidnap me in the parking lot. In the abandoned warehouse, he grabbed my chin with a menacing glint in his eyes: "You've ruined everything for me! Now, if I hand you over to the investors, Vivian will be saved!" He forced me to drink the bitter, drugged liquid. Just as my consciousness began to fade, Kevin kicked the...

The iron chain bit into my wrists, sending a sharp pain up my arms. My father squatted on the threshold, smoking a cigarette. I yelled, my throat growing hoarse. He kicked me hard. I fell to the ground. "How dare you rebel! I raised you just to trade you for money!" My mother tried to pull me up, but he shoved her away. "If you keep defending her, I'll beat you too!" That night, I felt around for that old diary. Suddenly, words appeared on its blank pages: "Take your mother and run." I went to find my mother. Her face was as pale as a sheet. "Don't talk nonsense—you must have imagined it," she said, but her hands were trembling violently. Grandma fell while trying to protect me. In front...
