New Bride, New Fate

2026-03-04

The day before the wedding, I received a call from Shirley Quentin. She said, "Howard Thompson, I'm calling off the engagement." All because of a name I had never heard before—Blake Gresham. She withdrew her investments, reported my father to the police, and even threatened the very survival of the Thompson family to make me submit. There I was, clutching the phone, standing in the midst of the meticulously prepared wedding venue, when I suddenly laughed. Fine, Shirley Quentin. This play—I'm not going to follow your script.收起

Chapter 1 of "New Bride, New Fate"

On the eve of the wedding, all of H City was wrapped in an atmosphere both joyful and tinged with subtle tension. I, Howard Thompson, as the only son of the Thompson Family, am about to step into the sacred halls of marriage with Shirley Quentin, the heiress of H City. This wedding, in the eyes of many, is a prime example of a business alliance—and a further cementing of the two families' power. I stood by the window, gazing out at the meticulously arranged garden, where vibrant flowers swayed gently in the breeze, as if celebrating this grand occasion. The air was thick with a subtle floral scent, woven together with the electric anticipation of the joy to come. The servants bustled through the garden, rushing to finish the last preparations for the wedding. I watched it all unfold, yet my heart felt strangely still. This marriage had been arranged by our families from the start; between Shirley Quentin and me, there was more a tacit alliance than any passionate love. Yet fate always seems to delight in unleashing fierce storms when everything appears calm. Just as I was lost in faint hopes for the future, a sharp phone ring shattered the silence. I furrowed my brow, a dark premonition rising within me. The moment I picked up the phone and heard the voice on the other end, my body froze instantly, nearly dropping the receiver from my hand. "Howard Thompson, I'm calling off the engagement." Shirley's voice was cold and resolute, with not a hint of hesitation. Those words struck like a thunderclap, exploding in my ears. I stood frozen in place, my mind blank, as if I'd been struck hard across the face. I never imagined that, on the eve of the wedding, she would say something like that. "What did you say? Shirley Quentin, have you lost your mind?" It took me a moment to snap back, and I shouted into the phone in anger. "I'm not crazy. I'm completely clear-headed. For my mentor's son, Blake Gresham, I've decided to call off the engagement." Shirley's voice stayed calm, yet there was an undeniable resolve beneath it. A flash of fury ignited inside me. Blake Gresham? That man I'd never even heard of had suddenly become the reason she wanted to break off our engagement. I couldn't comprehend it, nor could I accept it. "Shirley Quentin, don't forget, our marriage isn't just about the two of us—it also concerns the fates of both our families." "Have you thought about the consequences of what you're doing?" I tried to calm her down while reminding her of the importance of this marriage. "I'm fully aware of the consequences. I will withdraw all investments from the Thompson Family." Shirley Quentin's words shocked me once again. Withdrawing the investments would without a doubt be a crushing blow to the Thompsons. Many of the Thompson Family's projects depend heavily on the Quentin Group's financial backing. Should that funding be cut off, the fallout would be unimaginable. "How... how can you do this?" I was so furious I could barely speak, my heart heavy with resentment and bewilderment toward her. "I've already made up my mind; there's no room for discussion." Shirley Quentin said, then hung up the phone. I held the phone, my hand trembling slightly with anger. I never imagined that Shirley—always so poised and gracious—would take such a reckless step. I paced back and forth in the room, consumed by anxiety and unease. I knew this matter had to be resolved quickly; otherwise, the consequences would be disastrous. Just then, Father suddenly pushed open the door. His face was dark with a dreadful gloom, his eyes blazing with anger and urgency. "Howard, I already know that Shirley Quentin has called off the engagement. How could she do such a thing? It's utterly outrageous!" Father said angrily. I sighed helplessly and said, "Dad, I didn't expect her to suddenly break off the engagement either. And now she's even threatening to pull all the investments from our Thompson Family. What are we going to do?" Father paused for a moment before saying, "No, I have to go see her and get her to take back that order." With that, Father hurriedly left the room. I watched Father's retreating figure, a deep sense of worry settling in my heart. I don't know what will happen when Father goes to see Shirley Quentin, but I have a nagging sense that things won't be so straightforward.

I shot back. "Calling it a joke to humiliate me with a red stamp that says 'low-grade sow'? Melody, do you really think I'm that easy to bully?" The door opened, and Henry cut me off. "Nicole, Melody's just messing around. Let it go. It's beneath you to keep harping on it." I slammed the report down in front of him. "She insulted me, and you say it's beneath me? As the morning mist, heavy with the dampness of pothos, seeped into my nostrils, the phone vibrated like a grenade about to detonate. The encrypted signal from the military district pierced the screen in an instant. I stared at the cold cup of tea on the bedside table — the tranquility of the third day of leave shattered more completely than the tea leaves at the bottom of the cup. Top-secret A-level files, departure within one hour. The icy shards in the phone call sank down my throat as I felt the hand reaching for my field uniform begin to burn. The words "Photo Album" exploded before my eyes in the encrypted message — this was no ordinary image. When my fingertips touched the metal clasp of the cipher box, I knew that some dormant weight was about to be awakened.收起

On a rainy night at the nail beauty shop, I ducked in to escape the rain for ten minutes, only to be forced by the owner to pay a "venue fee" priced at five thousand. She flaunted a diamond ring: "Mark Young gave me this."—That was exactly the wedding ring I tossed into the trash last week. I smiled and handed over my card: thirty thousand upfront to steady the nerves, three hundred thousand to follow. Ten minutes later, a bodyguard kicked the door open: "Young Lady, are you closing the shop?" They didn't know that I, Reagan Clark, came today to collect my husband's body.收起

Edward Greenspan was gently stroking her photo frame. "When Oscar is a bit older, I'll divorce Freya Roger." My voice trembled, "Why?" "You were unconscious for three years. Luna was the one who stayed with me." He turned away, his eyes calm. "I've fallen in love with her." "What about me? What about our ten years together?" He handed me a check. "I can give you anything—except love." I laughed through my tears, turning away with a heart already cold.
