Leave a Man, Gain an Empire

A red silk rooster stood proudly beside the red carpet, and Ruby scoffed: "Grace, Mason's not free, so he's letting this rooster marry you." "Where is Mason?" I clenched my wedding dress, rage surging through me. Mason strode over and shielded Ruby behind him: "Grace, Ruby was just joking. Don't be ungrateful." "Joking?" I sneered, stepping closer, "I brought a dowry of ten million to save your family, and you humiliate me with a rooster?" Ruby began fake crying: "Mason, it's all my fault. I shouldn't have messed around." "Messed around?" I fixed my gaze on Mason, "You've let her take over my wedding room and embezzle my family's investment. Did you really think I was easy to bully?" Mason's face turned ashen: "Don't act recklessly! Canceling the investment won't do anyone any good!" I pulled out my phone and waved it: "Good? Did you really think I didn't notice what was in the juice that bridesmaid Mia gave me?"收起

Chapter 1 of "Leave a Man, Gain an Empire"

Tomorrow is my wedding day, and I'm sitting in the makeup room, the lace from trying on my wedding dress still lingering at my fingertips. Mia Lynn, my bridesmaid, walked over carrying a glass of orange juice, her smile a little too sweet, almost forced. "Grace, drink some juice to stay hydrated—you'll need to look perfect all day tomorrow." I didn't think much of it and took a big gulp from the glass. The juice tasted a little off, but I just figured it had some special fruit bits in it. The dizziness hit suddenly and violently; everything went dark, and I lost consciousness. When I woke up again, I was surrounded by noisy voices and festive music. I found myself standing at the end of the red carpet at the wedding banquet, still wearing that pristine wedding dress. No, this isn't the venue where my wedding is supposed to take place tomorrow. What sent chills down my spine even more was that the groom, Mason Collins, who should have been standing by my side, was gone. In his place was a big rooster wearing a red silk ribbon around its neck and a small red flower on its head. The guests around whispered among themselves, their eyes full of mockery and pity. "What is going on here?" I struggled against the dizziness, my voice trembling. A woman in a pink dress approached—Ruby Collins, Mason's adopted sister. She looked me up and down with a scornful glare. Ruby curled a mocking smile and said with disdain, "Grace, what else could it be? Mason suddenly had something come up, so he sent that rooster to stand in for him in the wedding ritual with you." "What did you say?" I stared at her in disbelief. "I said, the wedding ritual." Ruby stepped forward, reaching out to push me. "Don't hold up the auspicious time. Mason said once the ritual's over, he'll be back." I jerked my hand away from her, fury surging through me. "No way! Where's Mason Collins? Get him out here to face me!" "What's all the shouting about?" A familiar voice cut through the tension. I turned to see Mason Collins striding over, dressed in a crisp suit but wearing a look of irritation. "Mason, what the h*ll is going on?" I stepped quickly up to him and grabbed his arm. Mason yanked his arm free and stepped protectively in front of Ruby Collins. "Grace, knock it off." He frowned, his voice sharp and cold, "Ruby was only joking. Can you stop being so ungrateful?" "A joke?" I was shaking with anger, tears welling up in my eyes. "Using a rooster to marry me—is that supposed to be funny?" Ruby hid behind Mason, showing half her face, her voice plaintive: "Mason, I just thought it was a joke. I didn't expect Grace to take it so seriously... Sorry, it's all my fault." "Alright, stop crying." "Mason comforted her softly, then turned to scold me, 'Grace, Ruby's still young and doesn't know better. Can't you go easy on her? Today's a happy day—don't spoil it for everyone.'" Seeing his blatant favoritism, the last trace of hope in my heart was shattered. "Let her have her way?" I sneered quietly, my voice low but sharp enough for those around to hear clearly. "Mason Collins, have you forgotten who begged me in the first place to bring my dowry and marry into your Collins Family?" Those words struck Mason like a slap across the face, his expression instantly turning deathly pale. "What nonsense are you talking about?!" he shouted harshly. "Whether I'm making nonsense or not, you know the truth in your heart." I took a deep breath, swallowing the sharp pain in my chest, and said slowly, "I'm calling off this wedding. From this moment on, I, Grace Scott, have nothing to do with you, Mason Collins." After saying that, I turned and, ignoring the uproar behind me and Mason Collins's furious shouts, walked step by step out of this place that had humiliated me.

I stood at the kindergarten gate, holding a box full of cranberry cookies, only to be blocked by Paul's black car. He rolled down the window, and the scent of cedarwood perfume mixed with sarcasm hit me in the face. "Olivia, do you really want to embarrass yourself in front of our son that badly?" I gripped the insulated box tightly, my fingernails digging into the palm of my hand. "I'm here to deliver snacks. This is my job." "Job?" He scoffed, his eyes sweeping over the flour-stained cuffs of my sleeves. "You used to avoid the kitchen like the plague, and now look at you—working as a cook, making a laughingstock of yourself?" He held out a bank card. "Take the money and get out of here. Don't let Alex find out his mother is so worthless." "Paul!" I suddenly raised my voice, tears nearly spilling from my eyes. "There's no shame in earning money with my own hands....

The empty, dull ache in my lower abdomen hadn't faded yet when the hospital room door was kicked open. Melody stood by the bed, wearing a bright red dress. She held her phone screen right up to my face: "Look at your husband Bruce—see how sweetly he's smiling with me in his arms? This is the beach you've been longing to visit for five years but never got to." I clenched the bed sheets so tightly that my fingertips turned white: "You're lying! He's my husband!" "Husband?" She scoffed, her nails scraping across my cheek. "You are just a stand-in. All the jewelry and bags you received are nothing but trash I didn't want anymore." Suddenly, my phone vibrated, and a text message from an unknown number popped up: "Your third miscarriage wasn't an accident. Bruce put medicine in your milk." A cold chill swept over my entire body. I dialed Bruce's number, my voice trembling: "Was there something wrong...

My name is Kathy Sue. I waited for him in the pouring rain for two whole hours. Until I saw, in his friend circle, a female coworker smiling as she accepted the box of chestnut cake I'd been longing for over half a month. Seven years of love couldn't measure up to a casually bought box of pastries. What's even more ironic was that when I got home and opened the door, the girl who had bullied me back in school was sitting right on my sofa. And my boyfriend was gently handing her a cup of hot water.收起

The moment Caleb convulsed, I scooped him up and bolted downstairs, dialing Mark's number almost yelling into the phone. "Caleb's having a seizure again! Hurry to the City First Hospital!" The noise of an amusement park blared from the other end, his voice sharp and grating. "What's all the fuss about? It's not like it's the first time. Handle it yourself." "He's dying! He might need to be admitted to the ICU!" My legs were shaking violently. "Are you coming or not?" "Can't leave! I'm wining and dining Ms. Clark—this deal will net us a fortune!" His tone was matter-of-fact. "The hospital has doctors. Pay the fees first." "I don't have that much money! Mark, he's your son!" "You're so noisy!" He hung up without a second thought. I charged into the emergency room with burning-hot Caleb in my arms. The nurse took him from me, and I collapsed onto the floor right then and there. Just as the doctor...

Estelle River stood under the flashing police lights, his voice trembling but clear: "My father used illegal methods to cause the deaths of Yolanda Harper's parents." He knelt at my feet, eyes red, swearing, "Yolanda, from now on, I will protect you for life." Seven years later, on our wedding anniversary, he sounded impatient on the phone: "Working late. Let's do it another day." But the news photos showed him with the intern Lena Jackson, standing outside a luxury boutique. "Estelle, where are you?" "At the company. What are you doubting now?" "I saw the photo." He was silent for a few seconds, then let out a cold sneer: "Yolanda, do you really want to tear everything apart? Do you honestly believe your parents were innocent?" "Want to know the truth behind their jump?" He lowered his voice, like a venomous snake flicking its tongue. "Come to the hospital—I'll let you hear it with your own ears: what your father...

I clutched the revised seating chart, kicked open the door to Philip's office, and snapped, "Why did you give my reserved seat to Sophia?" He didn't even look up. "Sophia said the investors need to coordinate with her—business comes first." "Business?" I slammed the paper down on his desk. "You promised we'd sit together at every annual gala. Did that promise count for nothing?" "Circumstances have changed," he frowned. "Don't be childish. It'll jeopardize the financing." "Childish?" I let out a cold laugh. "The way you talk to her is way more affectionate than you've ever been with me." The door swung open, and Sophia sauntered in with a provocative smile. "Rachel, I asked for that seat. After all, Philip and I have more important matters to discuss." "Important matters?" I stepped closer, my voice sharp. "Are you talking about the baby in your belly? Or are you plotting how to swallow up the shares in my hands?" Both of...

A few days ago, Chris whispered in my ear, "Natalie Lynn, we'll get engaged early next month, and I'll dote on you like a real princess." But in the very next second, he walked through the crowd holding a bouquet of white roses, knelt down on one knee in front of Mindy, his voice humble to the dust: "Mindy, I've waited for you for five years. Marry me." The whispers around me were like poisonous needles piercing my eardrums. I gripped the wine glass tightly, my knuckles turning white: "Chris, have you forgotten our three years of companionship? Have you forgotten the tree you planted with your own hands?" He turned to look at me, his eyes filled with no remorse at all, only impatience: "Natalie, Mindy and I are soulmates. Stop being unreasonable." Mindy leaned against him, the corners of her red lips curling into a mocking smile: "Ms. Lynn, in a relationship, the one who isn't loved is...

The disinfectant stings like an ice pick, rousing me from the nightmare of lying on this white hospital bed for the tenth time in half a year. I stare at the ceiling, hearing the door softly turn open—it is him, dressed in a suit, carrying "apologies" in his hand. I clutch the bedsheet tightly, sneering coldly within: This time, I will no longer be the prey. In the next moment, I whisper: "Mark Collins, let us divorce." The words fall like stones; his mask of gentleness shatters instantly, and I, at last, have lit the fuse of my counterattack with my own hand.收起
