Taking Back What's Mine

2026-03-04

The disinfectant stings like an ice pick, rousing me from the nightmare of lying on this white hospital bed for the tenth time in half a year. I stare at the ceiling, hearing the door softly turn open—it is him, dressed in a suit, carrying "apologies" in his hand. I clutch the bedsheet tightly, sneering coldly within: This time, I will no longer be the prey. In the next moment, I whisper: "Mark Collins, let us divorce." The words fall like stones; his mask of gentleness shatters instantly, and I, at last, have lit the fuse of my counterattack with my own hand.收起

Chapter 1 of "Taking Back What's Mine"

The scent of disinfectant seeps once more into my nostrils, wielding a biting chill. I lie upon the familiar hospital bed, my frail body wrapped in white sheets. Red marks from intravenous needles linger on my arms like a series of ugly medals. This is my tenth time hospitalized in half a year. The nurse has just finished changing my dressing; her footsteps fade away. The ward door is gently pushed open, the metallic hinge creaking sharply. My husband, Mark Collins, enters wearing a sharply tailored dark gray suit. His hair is meticulously combed, yet beneath his eyes lies a subtle, hardly noticeable weariness. Behind him followed his assistant, Willow Lynn, the girl dressed in a pale pink dress. In her hand, she carried a fruit basket adorned with cartoon patterns, her face wearing a perfectly measured apology, like a puppet meticulously rehearsed. "Ruby, I am truly sorry; I accidentally bumped into you again this time." Willow placed the fruit basket on the bedside table. Her voice was as soft as waterlogged cotton, gently falling into the air. I stared at her without speaking, my fingers unconsciously clenching the bedsheet beneath me. The cotton fabric creased, its rough texture rubbing against my palm, also scraping the wound within my heart long since scabbed over. The last time, she "accidentally" spilled hot coffee on my hand, the red burn mark lingering for more than half a month. The time before that, she "accidentally" collided with me at the stairway, twisting my ankle until it swelled so badly I couldn't even wear my shoe. Every single "accident" bears the marks of intention, piercing my life like needles. Mark Collins came closer, reaching out to touch my forehead, likely trying to gauge my temperature. I turned my head aside; his fingertips missed, suspended in midair. After a few seconds, he awkwardly withdrew his hand. "Does it still hurt? The doctor said it's only a minor bone fissure this time; it should heal in a few days." His tone sounded gentle. His voice rose slightly at the end, yet I felt an icy chill creeping over me, as if submerged in freezing water.

My phone buzzed; it was a link from my roommate to the Campus Bulletin Board: "Look, someone's painted you as a malicious ex-girlfriend." I opened the post marked "Hot," its glaring title: "Former Campus Heartthrob, Tyler Chester's Fairy-tale Romance —Exes, Stay in Your Lane." "I heard the ex-girlfriend caused a car accident out of jealousy, ended up with an amputation, and still can't let go..." Comments kept flooding in below: "That ex-girlfriend is so vicious!" "Tyler Chester, Run!" My fingers trembled as a new message popped up from an unknown number: "Florence James... you think a cripple like you could ever make a move on Tyler?" I stared at that message, slowly running my hand over the cold joint of my prosthetic limb. Harper Nair, three years passed, and you're still pulling the same old trick.收起

That bottle of Folic Acid Tablets slipping out of Eddie's briefcase made my blood run cold instantly. "Suitable for pre-pregnancy and early pregnancy"—the words on the leaflet pierced my eyes sharply. I touched my swollen belly, my fingertips icy cold: "Eddie, why did you buy this?" The phone screen lit up, and in the shared Countdown App, besides our April due date, there was glaringly another note: "September 1st, baby's due date." My whole body trembled as I dialed his number, my voice shaking uncontrollably: "Eddie, whose baby has a due date in September?" "What foolish thoughts are running through your mind?" His tone was hurried, tinged with evasion. "The company has been busy, so Quincy asked me to help out with this..." I sneered coldly, grabbed my coat, and stormed to his Company. As the elevator doors slid open, an overwhelming rush of glaring pink flooded the room—my most despised color, one he had promised would never stain our...

She said this wedding is nothing but a show put on for you." I clench my fists tightly, forcing down my rage. "Brian, cut the crap and stop sowing discord. Today is Fiona's and my big day." "Big day?" He scoffs, shoving the phone right in front of my eyes. "See for yourself. She promised me she'd dump you the second the ceremony ends. All the happiness you thought you had is just a trap we carefully laid out." I stare at the malice in his eyes, my fingertips turning cold. "What do you want?" On my wedding day, my assistant Howard Lincoln came alone to propose a toast. She screamed and pushed me away, and the next moment, reporters stormed in. "Mr. Sanchez, why did you betray your fiancee Julia Sullivan on your wedding day?" The flashes nearly blinded me. Aurora James covered her face, sobbing, "He forced me—" Outside the crowd, Julia Sullivan stood there, her eyes filled with feigned pain. "Julia, let me explain—" "Gabriel Sanchez," her voice was as cold as ice, "you truly disgust me." Howard Lincoln caught her as she swayed; amid the clamoring voices, his whisper was sharp and clear. "Mr. Sanchez, did you enjoy the toast I proposed?"收起

The icy rain lashed against my face. I clenched the hem of my clothes, listening to the bald man's roar. "Thirty million—pay up today! Or I'll drag you to the nightclub to work off your debt!" "I really don't have the money. Give me a few more days..." My voice trembled, but it only earned me a harder kick. "Playing the prude? The Scott Family are done for!" He ground his shoe into the back of my hand, the searing pain piercing straight to my bones. Just then, a cold, crisp male voice cut through the rain. "Let her go." It was Bruce. The second I looked up, my blood all but froze. He stood beside his car, holding a black umbrella, his gaze as frigid as ice. "How much do they want?" He didn't spare me a glance, addressing the bald man directly. "Thirty million!" The bald man instantly turned obsequious. Bruce tapped his phone lightly with his fingertip....
