Chapter 1 of "Five Rounds"

I sit on the floor; it's cold, like the soles of Yale's feet when he had a fever last time. In my arms, I hold a blue teddy bear jacket, its collar stained with a bit of milk—Yale spilled some on it yesterday morning, and I haven't had a chance to wash it yet. On the coffee table lies a stainless steel fruit knife, its handle scratched—the mark Yale made when he was learning to cut fruit, crying and saying, "Dad, I'm sorry." Now, no one says sorry to me anymore. Yale is gone. I take out my phone and open the live streaming app. The account is newly registered, named "Yale's Dad." I thought about the livestream title for a long time, and finally typed: Wendy Wade, five rounds to save Leo Jones, or else bury Yale. The moment I hit the "Start Live" button, my hand trembled. The viewer count on the screen went from 1 to 10, then to 100, climbing fast. I glanced behind me; Leo was tied to a chair, his mouth sealed with tape, his eyes filled with terror. The bullet comments started scrolling: "What's going on? What is the streamer doing? Is this some kind of drama?" "Isn't that one in the back a mannequin? The prop looks pretty realistic." "Already reported for spreading violent content. Are you out of your mind?" I ignored the bullet comments, picked up another phone, and sent a message to Wendy Wade: Yale said he misses you. Come home early. After waiting three minutes, Wendy replied: Got it. Don't rush me. I'll come back soon. I mounted the phone on a stand and adjusted the angle to make sure it captured me and Leo Jones behind me. I spoke to the camera, my voice a little hoarse—probably from crying too much yesterday. I said, "Hello everyone, my name is Simon Lincoln. The woman on the screen is my wife, Wendy Wade. She betrays me with her lover, unaware that Leo Jones is here with me. Next, I'm going to play a game with Wendy. You all bear witness. Now, I'm connecting with her." I clicked on the video call, and while waiting, the bullet comments kept coming: "No way, a real call? This can't be scripted, right?" "The streamer looks pretty polished, how could he do something like this?" "Waiting for the twist, I bet it's just hype." The call connected, and Wendy Wade's face appeared on the screen, neon lights from a bar glaring behind her. Wendy said, "Simon Lincoln, what kind of madness are you up to now? Didn't I say I would be back soon?" Before she could finish, her eyes landed on Leo Jones behind me, and her voice suddenly stopped. She froze for two seconds, then immediately pulled out another phone and started dialing. The busy signal came through, and her face gradually turned as pale as paper. Wendy said, "Simon! Why is Leo Jones at your place? What are you trying to do?!" I said, "Nothing really. Just playing a game—truth or dare." Wendy laughed, a bitter, ugly laugh, and said, "Are you crazy? Simon, I'm warning you: don't touch him! Or you'll regret it!" I stood up and slowly walked behind Leo. The number of viewers in the live streaming room had already climbed to two hundred thousand. I picked up the fruit knife from the coffee table, pressing the blade against the tendon on Leo's left foot. Without hesitation, I sliced down. Blood sprayed out, splattering onto my face—warm and sticky. Leo Jones, who had been unconscious, was now jolted awake by pain, letting out 'oo-oo' sounds as he struggled desperately. The bullet comments exploded: "It's real! Not a prop!" "This guy's crazy! Call the police!" "Is he being cheated on? Why else would he be this ruthless?" I waved the bloodstained knife in front of the camera and said, "Wendy Wade, five rounds to save Leo Jones. Otherwise, you come and claim the body yourself." I raised the knife, aiming it at Leo Jones's eye. His tears fell onto my hand. Wendy's voice was sharp, like a broken whistle. She said, "No! I want to play! Simon Lincoln, I want to play! Don't hurt him!" I put down the knife and asked, "Truth or dare?" Wendy's voice trembled, laced with sobs. She said, "Dare." I said, "Okay."

The Ousted Daughter

"Cynthia, you stole my necklace!" My foster sister Ophelia Lopez clutched the diamond necklace and sank to the floor, crying. My father, Jonathan Lopez, instantly slapped me across the face. "Dad! I didn't steal it—she lent it to me to wear!" I yelled, clutching my burning cheek. "Shut up!" He pointed toward the door, his eyes ice-cold. "The Lopez family has no place for someone with dirty hands like you. Get out!" I looked at the barely concealed smile on Ophelia Lopez's lips, then at my mother's indifferent face; my heart felt torn apart. "You'd rather believe an outsider than your daughter?" "Cynthia, stop it." My older brother Casper Lopez's voice came from the staircase, his tone laced with impatience. "Ophelia is so pure—how could she possibly lie to us?"收起

When the trending topic "Richard Locke picks up Gillian Wilson from prison" popped up, I nearly dropped the coffee cup in my hand. The moment the door opened, that familiar perfume hit me—Gillian Wilson's signature scent. "Maya, I only picked her up to keep the reporters off our backs and give her a temporary place to stay." Richard Locke's voice was laced with fake tenderness. "A temporary place to stay? In my house?" I pointed at the long hair on his suit that wasn't mine. "Just like three years ago, when you hid her in your office and let me be the crazy woman everyone mocked online?" The doorbell rang abruptly, and Gillian Wilson stood at the door with her slightly swollen belly, timidly saying, "Mrs. Ford, I came to apologize." Richard Locke put his arm around Gillian Wilson and warned me, "She's carrying my child, so you'd better behave." I looked at this absurd scene and suddenly burst out...

The Past Pledge

On the night of the Valentine's Day, I held the bespoke "Star" necklace for her, trapped in traffic on the viaduct, wondering if she would cry when she received it. The car radio suddenly broke in with news of an accident—the location, the car model, the license plate—all unbearably familiar to me—the last digits matching our wedding anniversary. I ran wildly to the riverbank, the rose falling into the mud, seeing that mangled white car, her tangled long hair, and a hand reaching out from the passenger seat that was not mine. The police tape stretched like a torn red ribbon, slicing our love in two; I knelt on the ground, hearing my heartbeat shatter like shards of glass. So it turned out, tonight her surprise for me was to let me cast the necklace into the sea with my own hands.收起

As I counted for the three hundred and twenty-first time the glint along the crack in the foyer, the sound of the key turning echoed precisely on cue. Simon Jones leaned against the wall to change his shoes; the muted tapping of his prosthetic limb against the floor seemed to toll a death knell for this three-year marriage. He did not meet my gaze, instead walking directly to the living room. Tucked in the indentation of the sofa lay the movie ticket stub from the couples' seats last Wednesday. Suddenly, my cell phone vibrated; a multimedia message from an unknown number showed him stooping to tie the shoelace of a woman I did not know. Just then, the doorbell rang. I assumed it was the delivery, but when I opened the door, there stood the woman in the white dress from the photo, clutching a thermos, her eyes curved in a smile.收起

Bruce leaned against the end of the corridor, his tone provocative. "Jagger, Stacy Scott is carrying my child. It's time for you to step aside." I clenched the IV tube tightly. "You're well aware that you're HIV-positive. Do you dare to confess that to her?" He scoffed and closed in. "Confess? She did it voluntarily. The Scott Family's fortune will be mine. She's nothing more than a stepping stone." My phone vibrated. Stacy's voice was cold. "Jagger, I've sent the divorce papers. Noah is yours. Stop pestering me." "Pestering?" I said coldly. "Do you know those 'tonics' he's been giving you are antiretroviral drugs?" She snapped impatiently. "Jagger, you're despicable! Spreading rumors to slander Bruce!" The call ended abruptly. Bruce's tone turned vicious. "Be sensible. Otherwise, I can't guarantee Noah will be safe." My eyes turned icy. "If you dare to touch Noah, I'll send you both to hell." He left with a sneer. I once thought the poorest days were when we shared a single steamed bun, until he let his adopted sister move into our master bedroom, pushing me down into the basement with his own hands. I clutch the abortion diagnosis slip and stand at the villa gate, her coquettish giggles drifting out from inside. I push the door open. Brian Jones is drying her hair, snowflakes still clinging to the hem of his coat. "Brian, why is she back?" Nora snuggles into his arms, her tone dripping with provocation. Brian lifts his eyes, his gaze cold and indifferent. "Who allowed you to come back?" I fling the diagnosis slip in front of him. "Brian, our baby is gone." He doesn't even spare it a glance; instead, his brows furrow tightly. "I told you not to bother me with this nonsense. Nora caught a chill from skiing—I don't have time for you." "Your child!" My voice trembles. "While you were indulging in pleasure with her, I was losing him all alone in the hospital!" Nora lets out a scoffing laugh. "Hannah, Brian only has me in his heart. Losing this baby is a relief for everyone."...
