Belated Honesty

As I counted for the three hundred and twenty-first time the glint along the crack in the foyer, the sound of the key turning echoed precisely on cue. Simon Jones leaned against the wall to change his shoes; the muted tapping of his prosthetic limb against the floor seemed to toll a death knell for this three-year marriage. He did not meet my gaze, instead walking directly to the living room. Tucked in the indentation of the sofa lay the movie ticket stub from the couples' seats last Wednesday. Suddenly, my cell phone vibrated; a multimedia message from an unknown number showed him stooping to tie the shoelace of a woman I did not know. Just then, the doorbell rang. I assumed it was the delivery, but when I opened the door, there stood the woman in the white dress from the photo, clutching a thermos, her eyes curved in a smile.收起

Chapter 1 of "Belated Honesty"

The figure in the mirror bore a faint redness at the corners of their eyes. I pressed my fingertip against my eyelid, striving to quell the sharp sting of emotion. From the foyer came the sound of a key turning in the lock. As I turned, Simon Jones was propped against the wall, changing his shoes. His left prosthetic limb struck the floor with a heavy, dull thud. "You're back." I took the briefcase from his hand. A low sound emerged from his throat as his gaze swept over the dining table. "No cooking?" "A little tired," I replied. I lowered my eyes. "I ordered takeout—from your favorite place." He said no more, making his way directly to the living room. The sofa sank in one spot, accompanied by the soft rustle of fabric. Three days ago, I found a movie ticket stub in the pocket of his suit jacket. The seats were the couples' seats, and the date was last Wednesday. That day, he had said he was working late at the office. Suddenly, the cell phone screen lit up with a multimedia message from an unknown number. In the photo, Simon Jones was bending down to tie a woman's shoelace. Sunlight filtered through the cafe's glass window, casting a gentle curve upon his profile. My knuckles whitened as I gripped the cell phone. When the doorbell rang, I thought it was the food delivery. When I opened the door, the woman from the photograph stood before me. She wore a white dress and held a thermos, smiling warmly at me. "Who are you?" I leaned against the doorframe. "My name is Bella Miller." She shook the thermos gently. "Simon Jones said he wasn't feeling well, so I brought him some porridge." My gaze rested on her overly elaborate makeup. "He's inside. Please come in." As Bella stepped into the living room, Simon suddenly sprang up from the sofa; his prosthetic limb slipped against the floor, producing a sharp, grating sound. "Why have you come?" His voice bore a barely perceptible tremor of unease. Bella Miller set the thermos on the tea table, affectionately linking her arm with his. "I was afraid you might be hungry." She turned to look at me, her gaze suddenly sharp. "So this is Ms. Shaw, yes? Simon often speaks of you." I fixed my eyes on Simon Jones. "Who is she?" Simon Jones pushed Bella Miller's hand away. "Bella is... a friend's younger sister." "A friend's younger sister?" Bella Miller chuckled softly, drawing a velvet box from her bag. "Simon, these are the cufflinks you left at my place yesterday." Those platinum cufflinks were a gift I gave him last year for his birthday. Simon's face instantly darkened. Suddenly, I found it all bitterly laughable. For three years, I had stood by him through rehabilitation, rubbed his body, and cradled him through countless nights of insomnia wrought by phantom pain. All along, it had been nothing but a cruel joke. "Simon," My voice remained calm. "Let us divorce." He snatched his head up, his eyes bloodshot. "Nora, don't be ridiculous." "I am not being ridiculous." I turned toward the study to retrieve the divorce papers. They had been printed in the dead of night three days ago, when I found the movie ticket stub. Bella suddenly gave a sharp scream. I turned and saw her fall to the floor, clutching her ankle, her face pale as death. "Why did you push her?" Simon rushed forward and shoved me aside. I staggered back against the doorframe, a dull pain radiating through my back. "I did not." "If not you, then who?" Simon lifted Bella into his arms, his eyes as cold as ice. "Nora Shaw, when did you become so cruel?" Cruel? I studied him carefully, suddenly recalling that rainy night three years ago. He dragged me from the wrecked car, only to have falling steel bars strike his leg and face. At that moment, he was drenched in blood, yet he smiled at me and said, "Nora, don't be afraid; I'm here." It seemed that no matter how profound the gratitude, no matter how intense the love, neither could withstand the ravages of time and betrayal. Bella Miller wept in his embrace. "Simon, I don't blame Ms. Shaw; she only... she simply loves you too deeply." "Shut up!" Simon Jones shouted, then immediately softened his tone, "Does it hurt? I'll take you to the hospital." He carried Bella Miller toward the doorway, pausing as he passed beside me. "Nora Shaw, you will regret this." I watched them disappear beyond the door, then slowly knelt down, burying my face in my knees. The rain began to fall outside, as heavily as it had that night three years before. Amid the sound of rain, it seemed I could still hear him say, "Nora, when I'm better, I will marry you."

Bruce leaned against the end of the corridor, his tone provocative. "Jagger, Stacy Scott is carrying my child. It's time for you to step aside." I clenched the IV tube tightly. "You're well aware that you're HIV-positive. Do you dare to confess that to her?" He scoffed and closed in. "Confess? She did it voluntarily. The Scott Family's fortune will be mine. She's nothing more than a stepping stone." My phone vibrated. Stacy's voice was cold. "Jagger, I've sent the divorce papers. Noah is yours. Stop pestering me." "Pestering?" I said coldly. "Do you know those 'tonics' he's been giving you are antiretroviral drugs?" She snapped impatiently. "Jagger, you're despicable! Spreading rumors to slander Bruce!" The call ended abruptly. Bruce's tone turned vicious. "Be sensible. Otherwise, I can't guarantee Noah will be safe." My eyes turned icy. "If you dare to touch Noah, I'll send you both to hell." He left with a sneer. I whispered, "The game has only...

The Adopted Sister's Trap

2026-03-04
I once thought the poorest days were when we shared a single steamed bun, until he let his adopted sister move into our master bedroom, pushing me down into the basement with his own hands. That stormy night, my grandmother disappeared, while his adopted sister smiled and said to me, "She's just an old woman; if she's lost, then she's lost." Only later did I realize that some hearts are damper and darker than the basement.收起

I clutch the abortion diagnosis slip and stand at the villa gate, her coquettish giggles drifting out from inside. I push the door open. Brian Jones is drying her hair, snowflakes still clinging to the hem of his coat. "Brian, why is she back?" Nora snuggles into his arms, her tone dripping with provocation. Brian lifts his eyes, his gaze cold and indifferent. "Who allowed you to come back?" I fling the diagnosis slip in front of him. "Brian, our baby is gone." He doesn't even spare it a glance; instead, his brows furrow tightly. "I told you not to bother me with this nonsense. Nora caught a chill from skiing—I don't have time for you." "Your child!" My voice trembles. "While you were indulging in pleasure with her, I was losing him all alone in the hospital!" Nora lets out a scoffing laugh. "Hannah, Brian only has me in his heart. Losing this baby is a relief for everyone."...

"Mia, sign it! Cindy's pregnant with my child, and this divorce is a must! " Jimmy slammed the divorce papers on the table. Cindy stood beside him, covering her face and pretending to sob: "Mia, it's all my fault. I'd better leave..." I stared at the two of them, the searing pain of burning to death in my past life still seeming to gnaw at me. I picked up the papers and tore them to shreds right in front of their eyes. "Are you crazy?" Jimmy roared. "It's you who are crazy." I sneered, "This house was my dowry. If anyone's leaving, it's you two." Cindy paled: "What do you mean?" "Either get out right now and never show your faces again, or stay here as a maid to wait on me and your beloved Jimmy." I fixed my gaze on her, my voice icy, "Make your choice." Jimmy's face turned ashen with rage: "Mia, don't push your luck!" "Push...

The Picky Landlord in the Old Building

Clutching the sweat-soaked rental contract, I hurried up the worn stairwell toward my "new home," my heart full of hope—only to be met with the landlord's cold face. The shoe rack, drying clothes, cooking hot pot—each little thing became her excuse to be critical, even calling me "unreliable" in front of my colleagues. It wasn't until one night, when I caught sight of her sitting alone in the dark, lonely, that I realized the solitude behind her harshness...收起

I clutched the copy of the marriage alliance agreement, my fingers trembling as I slammed it down in front of Samuel. "A wedding with a thousand roses? It was all a lie to fool me, wasn't it?" His brows furrowed, his tone still laced with his usual haughtiness. "Nicole, stop being childish. My relationship with Melody is just a stopgap measure." "A stopgap measure?" I laughed, but tears streamed down my cheeks uncontrollably. "What am I then? A toy for you to amuse yourself with when you're bored? Or a pawn to keep you grounded?" He stepped forward, reaching out to touch me, but I dodged him sharply. "I never treated you as a toy," he said, his voice dropping, tinged with a hint of impatience. "Once the project stabilizes, I'll get a divorce." "No need," I stepped back, my gaze firm and resolute. "Samuel, I'm leaving." His eyes turned cold instantly. He blocked the door, his tone carrying an...

The first time I met Bruce River was in Nanny Zimmerman's dark, cramped room. His sleeves were rolled up, his wrists slender, his eyes filled with the despair of his sister close to death. I offered him that almost humiliating bargain: "I can save your sister, but you must be my bed partner." He was silent for a long while, then hoarsely replied, "Fine." At that moment, I did not know that this sordid entanglement would corrode my life for the next twenty years.收起

"I'm buying this house, two million." Lance Woodward's voice rang out in the empty living room, buzzing loudly in my ears. Three years apart, he wore an expensive coat, his eyes sharp as ice. "Lance Woodward, are you crazy?" I clenched my fists. "This house isn't worth that much." He pulled at the corner of his mouth, full of sarcasm. "What, afraid I can't afford it?" "I just don't get it," I met his gaze. "You clearly hate me, and why are you helping me?" He turned to leave but paused at the door, turning his face slightly, his voice low: "Harper Ferguson, why did you break up with me back then?" My breath hitched. He fixed me with a gaze that felt like judgment: "Think carefully before you answer."收起

I once thought I'd spend the rest of my life with Leo, but everything went off track after he brought Norman home. "This is Norman; he just turned sixteen. His mom was my best friend in college—she got into a car accident and passed away." "I'm sorry, I won't cause trouble. I can stay in the guest room, and cook for myself..." With his innocence and youthfulness, he gradually made me fall for him. I hated him, pouring out coldness and hostility, yet I couldn't resist his deep affection. "You're disgusting!" I once threw my nightgown fiercely at his face, but he only endured it silently. Three years later, he showed up again, no longer the naive boy he used to be. "Jenny, do you really love Leo?" he demanded, his eyes filled with pain and resentment. "I love you—I've loved you for a long time!" I was shocked and struggled, yet I also fell into his tenderness. "No matter...
