The Ousted Daughter

"Cynthia, you stole my necklace!" My foster sister Ophelia Lopez clutched the diamond necklace and sank to the floor, crying. My father, Jonathan Lopez, instantly slapped me across the face. "Dad! I didn't steal it—she lent it to me to wear!" I yelled, clutching my burning cheek. "Shut up!" He pointed toward the door, his eyes ice-cold. "The Lopez family has no place for someone with dirty hands like you. Get out!" I looked at the barely concealed smile on Ophelia Lopez's lips, then at my mother's indifferent face; my heart felt torn apart. "You'd rather believe an outsider than your daughter?" "Cynthia, stop it." My older brother Casper Lopez's voice came from the staircase, his tone laced with impatience. "Ophelia is so pure—how could she possibly lie to us?"收起

Chapter 1 of "The Ousted Daughter"

My cell phone vibrated on the bar counter as I wiped a wine glass. Water droplets slid down the glass, blurring the glaring headlines on the screen. "Heiress of a prestigious family caught stealing, adopted daughter reveals shocking secrets"—the notification pierced my eyes like needles. My grip on the glass suddenly tightened; the cold surface bit sharply into my palm. Colleagues gathered in the corner, the cell phone's speaker playing the conversation clearly. "Look at Ophelia Lopez, smiling so innocently, claiming Cynthia Lopez was the one who misled her." "Oh, the true heiress ends up like this—caught stealing and thrown out of her own home. How tragic." "Things in wealthy families are truly complicated: a foster daughter rising up while the true heiress falls into ruin. No script would dare write such drama." I turned and walked into the staff lounge; the moment I locked the door behind me, I slid down against the cold door. It's been five years. I thought I had buried those unbearable memories deep inside, but the moment I see Ophelia's hypocritical face, all my wounds tear open again. Ophelia Lopez wore an exquisite white dress in the video, her eyes brimming with tears as she faced the camera. She said she was only joking with me, never expecting I would actually steal her diamond necklace. She claimed I grew up away from home, inexperienced and naive, and made a foolish mistake. After speaking, she deliberately displayed the so-called "stolen" necklace, its diamonds flashing coldly in the light. I stared at the woman on the screen, twisting truth and lies, my teeth clenched until my gums ached. The scene from five years ago surged into my mind like a tide. It was my eighteenth birthday, and Ophelia Lopez took my hand and led me into her room. She opened the jewelry box, took out the diamond necklace, and said she wanted to lend it to me for a day to take photos as a keepsake. I didn't want to touch her things at first, but she clung to my arm coquettishly, saying that since we were sisters, we didn't need to be so strict. Just as I took the necklace, the door was suddenly flung open. My biological father, Jonathan Lopez, stood in the doorway, his face ashen, followed by the butler and several servants. Ophelia Lopez immediately let go of my hand, took two steps back, her eyes instantly reddening. "Dad, it's not Cynthia's fault, it's mine... I wasn't careful with the jewelry box." She said, choking back tears. I still clenched that necklace in my hand, helplessly without a word. Jonathan Lopez didn't give me a chance to explain; he pointed to the door and shouted, "The Lopez Family has no place for someone with dirty hands like you. Get out!" I looked at him with his eyes full of disgust, then at Ophelia beside him, her head lowered but a smile hiding at the corner of her lips, and my heart felt as if it had been ripped out. "I didn't steal." I gritted my teeth, my voice trembling uncontrollably. Jonathan Lopez pulled a thick wad of cash from his wallet and slammed it onto my face. The bills scattered across the floor, some even sticking to my hair. "Take the money and disappear immediately. Don't ever let me see you again." His voice was dripping with disgust. As I walked out of the Lopez family villa, fine rain was falling. I didn't look back. I just shoved the money into the trash bin, letting the rain soak me through. The lounge door was knocked, and a colleague's voice came through: "Cynthia, Private Room 308 needs more wine. Please go." I took a deep breath, wiped the wet traces from the corner of my eyes, and stood up to straighten my uniform. The moment I pushed the door open, the figure at the end of the corridor made me hesitate. The man wore a perfectly tailored black suit, standing tall, his profile still as I remembered it. Casper Lopez, my elder brother—the one who once spoiled me like a little princess but chose silence the moment I was falsely accused. He seemed to notice me as well; turning his head, a flicker of surprise crossed his deep eyes, quickly replaced by a complex emotion. We locked eyes from several meters apart; the air seemed to freeze around us. Five years had passed since we last met. He was more mature now, a sharper ruthlessness etched between his brows from the business world. I was the first to look away, lowering my head and quickening my pace as I passed him by. As we brushed past, I caught the familiar scent of cedar on him, and my heart clenched painfully without my control. "Cynthia." He spoke suddenly, his voice low and husky. My footsteps faltered, but I didn't turn around. "You really don't want to see me?" His voice carried a faint, almost imperceptible trace of grievance. I gripped the wine list tightly and said coldly, "Mr. Lopez, I still have work to do." After speaking, I walked straight into Private Room 308 and closed the door behind me, cutting off his gaze.

When the trending topic "Richard Locke picks up Gillian Wilson from prison" popped up, I nearly dropped the coffee cup in my hand. The moment the door opened, that familiar perfume hit me—Gillian Wilson's signature scent. "Maya, I only picked her up to keep the reporters off our backs and give her a temporary place to stay." Richard Locke's voice was laced with fake tenderness. "A temporary place to stay? In my house?" I pointed at the long hair on his suit that wasn't mine. "Just like three years ago, when you hid her in your office and let me be the crazy woman everyone mocked online?" The doorbell rang abruptly, and Gillian Wilson stood at the door with her slightly swollen belly, timidly saying, "Mrs. Ford, I came to apologize." Richard Locke put his arm around Gillian Wilson and warned me, "She's carrying my child, so you'd better behave." I looked at this absurd scene and suddenly burst out...

The Past Pledge

On the night of the Valentine's Day, I held the bespoke "Star" necklace for her, trapped in traffic on the viaduct, wondering if she would cry when she received it. The car radio suddenly broke in with news of an accident—the location, the car model, the license plate—all unbearably familiar to me—the last digits matching our wedding anniversary. I ran wildly to the riverbank, the rose falling into the mud, seeing that mangled white car, her tangled long hair, and a hand reaching out from the passenger seat that was not mine. The police tape stretched like a torn red ribbon, slicing our love in two; I knelt on the ground, hearing my heartbeat shatter like shards of glass. So it turned out, tonight her surprise for me was to let me cast the necklace into the sea with my own hands.收起

And my husband Sam, who is a judge, wanted me to take the blame! My best friend slit her throat in the courtroom. As I counted for the three hundred and twenty-first time the glint along the crack in the foyer, the sound of the key turning echoed precisely on cue. Simon Jones leaned against the wall to change his shoes; the muted tapping of his prosthetic limb against the floor seemed to toll a death knell for this three-year marriage. He did not meet my gaze, instead walking directly to the living room. Tucked in the indentation of the sofa lay the movie ticket stub from the couples' seats last Wednesday. Suddenly, my cell phone vibrated; a multimedia message from an unknown number showed him stooping to tie the shoelace of a woman I did not know. Just then, the doorbell rang. I assumed it was the delivery, but when I opened the door, there stood the woman in the white dress from the photo, clutching a thermos, her eyes curved in a smile.收起

Bruce leaned against the end of the corridor, his tone provocative. "Jagger, Stacy Scott is carrying my child. It's time for you to step aside." I clenched the IV tube tightly. "You're well aware that you're HIV-positive. Do you dare to confess that to her?" He scoffed and closed in. "Confess? She did it voluntarily. The Scott Family's fortune will be mine. She's nothing more than a stepping stone." My phone vibrated. Stacy's voice was cold. "Jagger, I've sent the divorce papers. Noah is yours. Stop pestering me." "Pestering?" I said coldly. "Do you know those 'tonics' he's been giving you are antiretroviral drugs?" She snapped impatiently. "Jagger, you're despicable! Spreading rumors to slander Bruce!" The call ended abruptly. Bruce's tone turned vicious. "Be sensible. Otherwise, I can't guarantee Noah will be safe." My eyes turned icy. "If you dare to touch Noah, I'll send you both to hell." He left with a sneer. I whispered, "The game has only...

I once thought the poorest days were when we shared a single steamed bun, until he let his adopted sister move into our master bedroom, pushing me down into the basement with his own hands. That stormy night, my grandmother disappeared, while his adopted sister smiled and said to me, "She's just an old woman; if she's lost, then she's lost." Only later did I realize that some hearts are damper and darker than the basement.收起

I clutch the abortion diagnosis slip and stand at the villa gate, her coquettish giggles drifting out from inside. I push the door open. Brian Jones is drying her hair, snowflakes still clinging to the hem of his coat. "Brian, why is she back?" Nora snuggles into his arms, her tone dripping with provocation. Brian lifts his eyes, his gaze cold and indifferent. "Who allowed you to come back?" I fling the diagnosis slip in front of him. "Brian, our baby is gone." He doesn't even spare it a glance; instead, his brows furrow tightly. "I told you not to bother me with this nonsense. Nora caught a chill from skiing—I don't have time for you." "Your child!" My voice trembles. "While you were indulging in pleasure with her, I was losing him all alone in the hospital!" Nora lets out a scoffing laugh. "Hannah, Brian only has me in his heart. Cindy stood beside him, covering her face and pretending to sob: "Mia, it's all my fault. I'd better leave..." I stared at the two of them, the searing pain of burning to death in my past life still seeming to gnaw at me. I picked up the papers and tore them to shreds right in front of their eyes. "Are you crazy?" Jimmy roared. "It's you who are crazy." I sneered, "This house was my dowry. If anyone's leaving, it's you two." Cindy paled: "What do you mean?" "Either get out right now and never show your faces again, or stay here as a maid to wait on me and your beloved Jimmy." I fixed my gaze on her, my voice icy, "Make your choice." Jimmy's face turned ashen with rage: "Mia, don't push your luck!" "Push...
