Beyond the Pain

"Rachel, stop daydreaming. A man of such distinction as Harry—do you really think you deserve him?" Mary's contemptuous voice was like shards of ice, piercing straight into my heart. "My business with Harry is none of your concern!" I clenched my fists, staring at her angrily. "Humph," she sneered. "I'm only doing this for his good. You're just an ordinary nurse; you'll only hold him back." Just then, Harry's voice came from behind: "Rachel, maybe we... should take some time apart." "What did you say?" I turned around in disbelief, tears welling up in my eyes. "Have you forgotten our promise?" "Face reality. I can't miss this chance to pursue advanced studies in Capital City." Five years later, Harry appeared in front of me again: "Rachel, can you give me another chance?" I looked at him coldly and said, "Harry, do you really think we can go back to how things were before?"收起

Chapter 1 of "Beyond the Pain"

The laughter in the dormitory hallway was like shards of broken glass, sharply piercing my eardrums. The door to the activity room on the third floor was half-open; my diary lay spread out on the coffee table, and a few girls were gathered around, pointing at it. The secrets I had hidden between the lines were being passed around as a joke. "So Rachel Lincoln has a crush on Harry Jones, that guy from the Computer Science Department who picks up empty bottles every day?" "Hilarious. She should look at herself first—she's from the Nursing Department. Does she think she deserves Harry?" Clutching the hem of my clothes, my nails digging deep into my palms, I rushed to close the diary and, under their mocking stares, nearly fled from the dormitory. Tears welled in my eyes, but my feet didn't stop; I kept running until I reached the wisteria bed behind the Library, only then daring to crouch down, my shoulders shaking uncontrollably. The late spring breeze carried the sweet scent of wisteria, yet it couldn't ease the weight in my heart. I buried my face in my knees, clutching my diary tightly against my chest, as if it were the last fragment of my dignity. "You're blocking me from picking up the empty bottle." The clear voice carried a faint teasing note, like a breeze gently skimming over a restless lake. I looked up and met a pair of eyes so clear they seemed untouched by any impurity. The boy wore a school uniform, faded from countless washes, with the knees of his pants frayed. Cradled in his arms was a small stack of empty plastic bottles. Without waiting for my reply, he crouched down beside me, carefully arranging the plastic bottles one by one, and somehow built them into a small tower. "See," he said, smiling sideways at me, a faint dimple appearing on his cheek, "no matter how chaotic things are, no matter how hard it gets, if you take your time sorting them out, you can put them all in perfect order." I stared at that crooked, wobbly plastic bottle tower and couldn't help but laugh out loud, but the tears came harder, splashing onto the cover of my diary, smudging a small patch of water stains. His name was Harry Jones, a second-year student in the Computer Science Department. Later, I learned that in his spare time, he always collected recyclables around campus and tutored on weekends, all to save up medical expenses for his grandpa in the countryside. That day, he stayed with me for a long time, didn't ask much—just, after I calmed down, he gave me that plastic bottle tower and said, "When you're sad, look at this. No matter how messy things get, you can always put them in order." Our paths cross from this moment on.

The Pill Conspiracy

My phone rang; it was my husband, Kane Carr. I was staring at the suspiciously colored pills inside my mother's medicine bottle. "Rhoda, did you get your bonus? Frank is waiting to buy the car; he just needs the money." My fingers tightened around the medicine bottle. "Kane Carr, where did you get my mother's targeted therapy drugs?" There was a pause on the other end, then he laughed lightly. "From the hospital—where else? They're working well, aren't they?" "Working well?" I poured the pills into my palm. "I just sent them for testing, and the doctor said they contain only Vitamin B." "Listen to me, Rhoda, maybe... maybe I was deceived!"收起

The Lipstick and the Lies

That morning, I caught a cloying scent of perfume on the collar of her coat—neither one I had bought, nor a scent she had worn in the past three years. On the washbasin lay a freshly unwrapped, 'seductive red' lipstick, like a flag of provocation. She kissed me lightly goodbye as usual, saying she had a department dinner, seemingly forgetting that I am the true heir to L Group. That night, I unlocked her mobile phone. A pinned message from someone labeled 'AI' read, 'The dress you wore today is beautiful.' She replied, 'Too bad you can't touch it.'收起

The Bomb Defuser

The live stream countdown reaches the last second, and I smile as I hit start — the camera capturing me, the city bomb squad's "queen of bomb disposal." The next second, my phone flashes with my sister's urgent video: what she's stepping on isn't a bomb, but my past. I hang up and keep demonstrating the "zero-cost purchase," while the bullet screen insults me as a cold-blooded monster. Nobody knows the real explosive device isn't under her shoe, but inside my chest — a landmine buried by my family for twenty-five years.收起

I once believed the rose tattoo on Draco Goodwin's chest was made for me. Three years by his side, a parade of actresses came and went—but I was the only one always there. I attended his social engagements, drank for him, slept in his master bedroom, and heard him mumble "Rose" indistinctly before sleep. Until Sandy Black arrived. She wore the emerald bracelet Draco Goodwin gave her and laughed softly as she entered the lounge I had used for two years. From outside the door came the sound of him making a phone call, tender yet painfully sharp— "Got it, Sandy." "Before we get married, I'll settle all my past lovers." The hand gripping the door handle was as cold as ice.收起

"What's the big deal about giving the pocket watch to Whitney, Daniel?" My sister Mindy's voice was tinged with impatience as she shielded Whitney behind her. "It's just an old watch—do you really want to ruin the engagement party over it?" Whitney's eyes were red, and she looked on the verge of tears. "Daniel, I just like it so much, that's all. I don't mean anything else. Please don't fight with Mindy..." "That's all?" I let out a cold laugh, pulled out my phone, and played the recording. Her calculating voice echoed through the Banquet Hall instantly: "Once I get the pocket watch, I'll stir up trouble to make them break up. Then the position of Mrs. Lewis will be mine!" Whitney's face turned deathly pale, but Mindy still refused to back down. "Even if she was wrong, you should have given in to her! If the Scott Family hold us accountable, can you take the responsibility?" "I can't take...

My son, Sawyer Evans, is in the emergency room being pumped—poisoned by my husband Frank Evans' mistress, Grace Lindsay. I kicked open her door; she was casually wearing a face mask. "You poisoned the milk?" My voice trembled. "So what if I did?" She pulled off the mask, smiling wickedly. I lost all control; the moment I plunged the fruit knife into her arm, Frank Evans burst in. "Ivy! Are you crazy?!" He shoved me aside and grabbed Grace Lindsay. "Yeah, I'm crazy." I wiped the blood from my face and looked him straight in the eye. "Frank, I want a divorce. I'm taking Sawyer with me." He looked like he'd just heard a joke. "Sawyer is my child; you have no right—" "He's not!" I cut him off, every word sharp as ice. "Sawyer is my son with Kingsley Flores! Your entire family's empire is propped up by his patents!" I stepped forward and locked eyes with his shaking...
