The Recording Under My Bed

"Sophia, is this what your daily life with Luke is usually like?" Sarah, who claimed to be Luke's good friend, spoke with undisguised malice in her tone. Before I could even respond, she played that private audio recording from our wedding night—one that was supposed to be only between the two of us. "Guess where I recorded this? Right under the bed in your bedroom!" She laughed triumphantly. "Hiding under the bed to record something like this—this is what you call a friend?" I stared at Luke, but he averted his gaze, daring not to meet my eyes at all. Luke grabbed my wrist abruptly: "Sophia, stop making a mountain out of a molehill. Sarah doesn't mean any harm. Can we just let this go?" "Let it go?" I yanked my hand back sharply. "We're getting a divorce." His face darkened instantly: "Sophia, are you really going to ruin us over such a trivial matter?" "If you dare to mention divorce, I'll make sure you can't stay in this city any longer, and I'll also ruin your reputation!" I tightened my grip on the backup of the recording in my pocket and said coldly: "We'll just wait and see then. I'll make sure neither of you ever get a chance to bounce back."收起

Chapter 1 of "The Recording Under My Bed"

The home party house was thick with smoke, colorful LED strips twisting into light trails across the ceiling. I linked my arm with Luke's, sitting in the corner of the sofa, watching him and his childhood friends clinking beer cans and joking around. Sarah Xavier walked over holding a wine glass, droplets of condensation slipping through her fingers. She was wearing the same strappy dress I'd worn last birthday, a cheap rhinestone brooch pinned to the neckline, her teardrop mole flashing wildly every time she smiled. "Sophia, do you and Luke usually... get all lovey-dovey like this?" She dragged out the tone, the ending laced with a challenge. Her gaze swept across everyone there, deliberately sharpening the malice in her voice. I pinched Luke's sleeve with my fingers, just as I was about to speak. She pulled out her mobile phone and quickly tapped twice. The suggestive sound of heavy breathing suddenly exploded in the noisy room, mixed with car horns outside. Every syllable sounded like a rusty needle stabbing into my ears. That was my voice, along with Luke's drunken whispers. It was a private moment from our wedding night. "Guess where I recorded this?" Sarah Xavier smiled smugly, the curve of her mouth sharp like a little knife. "Right under your bedroom bed. Luke told me to hide there and wait until you guys were done—said he wanted to surprise me." The whole room fell dead silent, the air conditioner's whoosh suddenly sounding way too loud. Some people looked away at the paintings, others tightened their grip on their beer cans and whispered. Luke suddenly jumped up, his knee hitting the coffee table with a dull thud. He snatched the phone and turned off the screen. "Sarah, don't be ridiculous. We're just friends." His excuse sounded weak and empty; his eyes darted around, avoiding mine. "Friends?"I cut him off, my voice shaking uncontrollably. Ice-cold tingles ran from my fingertips up my arm to my chest, and a wave of humiliation crashed over me. "Hiding under the bed to listen to us, recording it, and then playing it for everyone—this is what you call a friend?" I stared into his dodging eyes, my stomach twisting, acid burning up my throat. A jug of ice water sat on the coffee table, just pulled from the fridge, frost covering its sides. I reached out and splashed the water hard over the two of them. The ice water ran down Luke's white shirt, spreading a dark stain across his chest. Sarah's camisole was soaked and stuck to her skin, revealing the edge of her gray underwear—she looked completely helpless. "Luke, I'm divorcing you." I dropped those words, my fingers white from gripping so hard. I grabbed the canvas bag on the couch, didn't even zip it up, and stormed out of the home party house without looking back. The evening breeze outside, carrying the chill of early autumn, hit my face like a block of ice. I sobered up a little, but the tears wouldn't stop falling, cold and sharp against my collarbone. Luke and I met in school, dated for three years, and have been married for one. I used to think he was a good man—I remember telling him I hated cilantro and how he surprised me with a rose cake on our anniversary. But I never expected he'd let his female friend do something so ridiculous and shameless. Turns out all that tenderness and care was covering up betrayals no one knew about. I took a cab back to our empty home; the motion sensor light by the door flickered on and off. Sitting on the cold floor, staring at our wedding dress photo on the wall, all I felt was bitter, painful irony. I don't know how long I've been sitting there; the cold from the floor seeped right into my bones. The door lock clicked, and Luke walked into the hallway, reeking of booze and smoke. He crouched in front of me; the booze smell made me turn my head away. He reached out to touch my hair. "Sophia, I'm sorry. I know I messed up." "Sarah's a blunt one, but she means no harm. Don't take it to heart." His apology sounded casual, like he was brushing off something trivial. "No harm?" I looked up, my voice ice-cold. "Luke, if I had my guy best friend hiding under the bed recording you, could you seriously say he didn't mean any harm?"

Three months later, clutching the medical exam report that read "Reproductive Function Restored," my hands trembled. The weight that had been pressing on my heart for half a year was finally lifted. My phone buzzed. In the family group chat, my wife, Clara Hassan, posted a photo of a pregnancy test: "Baby on the way! Can't wait to meet our baby!" My blood ran cold. A private screenshot message followed immediately—transfer of 8.88 million, recipient: Wayne Sheen. Wayne Sheen, the "nutritionist" she introduced to come to our home to treat me. I stormed into the bedroom, holding my phone up in front of her. "8.88 million? Does a nutritionist really deserve that much?" She stopped applying lipstick, her smile frozen at the corner of her mouth: "... Wayne worked hard for three months too before I could get pregnant." I slammed the report down in front of her: "So the moment I'm healed, you're pregnant. What are the odds? Your nutritionist really knows...

In the funeral home, the eerie green candlelight flickered. I struggled, but the servant held me down tightly. Shirley Hough held up a voice recorder, her voice sharp: "Listen, everyone! This is the proof that Tina Hough forced our parents into no man's land!" "That voice was doctored! You are framing me!" I shouted. She grabbed my hand, cold iron tongs clamping down on my fingernails. "Won't confess? Then don't blame me for being ruthless." "Ah—!" In excruciating pain, my fingernails were ripped out one by one. She leaned close and whispered in my ear, "Dear sister, this is only the beginning. I will make you confess with your own lips that you were the one who killed them."收起

"Careful." A pair of hands steadied me. It was Victor Lancaster. Later, he sat in the shadows of the clubhouse and asked me, "What do you want?" "I want to be the best actress." My private photos were all over the internet. I called him, my voice trembling, "Those were secretly taken!" But he sneered, "Melissa Jackson, what wouldn't you do for opportunities?" For nine years I knocked at the temple gate, and on the day I finally came down the mountain, I saw the Shaw Family's Residence bore a different name. Mindy Carter—my wife left behind in the mundane world—sat on the pear blossom wood, setting a fountain pen into the inkstone, like delivering a verdict. "The Shaw Family is under my control now." She lifted her eyes, her voice as calm and cold as autumn frost. I carried an empty box, thinking I could reclaim my inheritance, only to be pinned at the doorstep by her words, "You try." The mundane world I fled nine years ago had long since turned on me and struck me down instead.收起

The Kindest Deception

As I picked up the pearl earrings, Theodore was just opening the car door. "Whose are these?" My voice trembled. His eyes darted away. "Probably a client's." Three days later, I pulled a pair of black stockings from the car trunk, scented with an unfamiliar perfume. "Which client's are these now?" I threw the stockings down in front of him. His face went pale. Suddenly, he gripped my shoulder with frightening force. "Don't ask, Felicity." His voice was low, each word pressed through clenched teeth. "Some things are better left unknown." "Are you afraid I'll find out something?" I stared at him. "Shut up!" He snapped, his eyes terrifyingly red. "For our child's sake, and for your own, don't ask again."收起
