Lies That Gnaw at Family

I blocked the basement door, clutching the stack of fake overseas photos. My voice trembled, but every word cut like a blade: "Mia, did you do this? Did you spread those rumors too?" She twirled a strand of hair, her smile vicious yet unapologetic: "So what if I did? Mom, Dad, and Brother only believe me. Who'd ever trust someone as 'superfluous' as you?" "I saved your life!" I lunged forward and grabbed her wrist. "I pushed you out of the way during the car crash! I worked part-time jobs to buy you that cake! Why would you ruin me?" She wrenched her arm free, her eyes glinting with malice: "Because you're in my way! Their love was always meant to be mine alone!" No sooner had the words left her mouth than two dark figures emerged from behind, clamping their hands over my mouth and nose. I struggled, glaring at her. She stepped closer, leaning down to whisper in a cold, low voice: "Molly, disappear. Never come back." Before my consciousness faded, I heard her order the men in black: "Clean this up properly. And make sure the 'evidence' gets sent home." As darkness closed in, I summoned my last ounce of strength to scream: "You'll be exposed sooner or later!" But she only laughed louder, more cruelly: "Exposed? By the time they find out, you'll already be rotting sludge—guess which one they'll believe? A dead girl... or me?"收起

Chapter 1 of "Lies That Gnaw at Family"

The elevator doors clicked shut, and my sister Mia Lynn's sobbing immediately echoed inside. Her right leg was in a metal support frame as she curled up in the corner, her hands gripping the rods tightly. "Sis, I'm scared. What if we're stuck in this elevator forever?" Mia Lynn's voice trembled, her eyes red and puffy. I crouched down to comfort her. "Don't be afraid. I pressed the emergency bell; the maintenance personnel said they'll be here in ten minutes." Before I could even touch her, Mia Lynn suddenly flinched, and the support frame clanged dully against the elevator wall. "Don't touch me!" she said, her tone resisting and her eyes panicked. I was stunned; that moment of avoidance became the root of all the misunderstandings that followed. Ten minutes passed, but the maintenance personnel still hadn't arrived. The elevator lights flickered on and off. "Sis, my leg is so numb. The support frame is pressing against my bone and it hurts. I don't think I can hold on much longer." Mia Lynn bit her lip, her voice filled with pain. "I'll press the bell again." I stood up and pressed the bell repeatedly, then reached out to pry open the elevator door. "Hang in there a little longer—I'll try to make a crack for some air." "It's useless!" Mia Lynn's crying suddenly grew louder. "You just don't want to save me, you just want to see me suffer!" I froze for a moment, both angry and frustrated. "Mia, how can you say that? How could I not want to save you? I've been trying all along!" She turned her face away and ignored me, only her sobbing echoing inside the elevator. We waited like that for a full three hours.

In the warm light of the music store, I was accompanying Tina to choose a practice piano when a familiar male voice suddenly pierced my eardrums, freezing the blood in my veins. Charles stood not far away, dressed in a neat suit and leather shoes. He looked more composed than he had seven years ago, yet the arrogance of his younger self still lurked in his eyes. "Bella, seven years apart, and you're still so shabby," he said as he walked over, his gaze sweeping over Tina and me with a condescending contempt in his tone. "Buying this kind of cheap piano for the kid? If you hadn't plagiarized back then, would you have ended up so hard up?" I suddenly clenched Tina's hand tightly, my fingertips turning white. "Charles, shut your mouth! Stars is my work—it was you and Nancy who teamed up to steal it!" "Steal?" He let out a sneer and took a step closer. "Back then,...

"Fiona?" Felix Green held a cigar between his fingertips. His black suit made him stand tall and straight, and his voice was imposing. "Stay here and obey my rules." "What do you want me to do?" I stepped back warily. Dylan shoved me forward. "Fiona, take good care of Mr. Green." "I don't need a servant." Felix chuckled, cutting Dylan off. "The money's been transferred to your account. Leave." The heavy door clicked shut. I was like a bird in a cage. "My rules," he said. "Don't ask questions that aren't your business. Be at my beck and call." "What about my freedom?" I turned to look at him. He grabbed my wrist, his grip tight and forceful. "You lost your freedom the moment you were sold." "It hurts!" I struggled, and red marks sprang up on my wrist. He let go, his thumb brushing the red marks. "Don't provoke me." Passing the study late at night, I heard him...

With a carefully chosen gift for my father's milestone 60th birthday in hand, I hurried home full of joy, hoping to surprise him. The birthday banquet I had painstakingly prepared unexpectedly became the beginning of my despair...收起

The Dark Side of Wedding

"Debra Buck, you're truly the most obedient dog the Buck family has ever raised." Allen Shane grasped my chin; the first words he spoke to me at the end of the wedding aisle shattered every disguise he had worn. The ring slipped coldly onto my finger, but I felt the engraving inside — his and Sylvia Buck's initials. My blood instantly froze. "Surprised?" He pressed close to my ear, his breath scorching, his words venomous: "You stole her identity, so I'll let you taste what it's like to live as a laughingstock under her name." The guests' blessings crashed down like a tidal wave. I clenched my skirt, my fingertips digging into the palm of my hand: "Allen Shane, you will regret this." He smiled, but his eyes were as cold as ice: "You're the one who will regret it."收起

He gripped my chin, forcing me to look at my father's pale face on the screen. "Either he dies, or you do." He smiled, "Make your choice, my fiancée." My mouth was gagged; I could not speak, only desperately shook my head. Tears blurred my vision, but I clearly saw the determination in my father's eyes. "Jenny, live well." Those were my father's final words. Then came a muffled sound. Miguel Raymond released me, his fingertips brushing my cheek: "Happy birthday." I slumped against the car seat, the sound of the world collapsing deafening in my ears. It wasn't until he turned to get out of the car that I forced the words through clenched teeth: "You'll regret this." He glanced back, as if hearing some joke: "You?"收起

The Winning Lottery

I clutched that lottery ticket and hid in the kitchen, my knuckles whitening from the grip. The ten million digits danced before my eyes, while in the living room, my mother smiled as she said to my sister, "Let your sister give you the computer." For thirty years, I've been used to sacrificing, but this time—I touched the burning paper tucked inside my pajamas pocket—I'm going to live for myself. Even if they tear me apart.收起

The Rural Tycoon

"86,000 total; you all should pay 43,000 each." When I pushed the bill toward Carrie and her parents, Grace, her mom, nearly rolled her eyes. "Jeff! Are you even a man? You invite us out and then want to split the bill?" I looked at her calmly, "You just said we're not family." I turned to Carrie, who still wore that defiant look from slapping me: "Carrie, you agree to break up, right?" She bit her lip, avoided my eyes, but still nodded. "Then that's settled." I tapped on the bill. "Cash or transfer?" Just then, the door to the private dining room swung open, and Mr. Johnny—the one who'd been showering Carrie with gifts—walked in. "How much? I'm paying for Carrie!" He flashed his bank card with a showy grin.

Back to Eighteen

A splitting headache bursts through my skull. I pry my eyes open, and my gaze collides with Daniel—thirty years old, dressed immaculately in a tailored suit, standing at the doorway of our high school classroom, his stare cold enough to cut to the bone. "You're here too." He speaks first, his voice sharp with wariness. My fingers clamp white-knuckled around the edge of the desk. "What right do you have to come back? Weren't you the one who abandoned me back then, only to turn around and get engaged to the Scott Family?" He takes a long, menacing step forward. "I'm here to stop the past from repeating itself. Better that than you stubbornly walking straight into the same ruin." "Stop it?" A bitter laugh rips from my throat. "You think you even deserve to? You said you had no choice, that you were powerless. I waited for you in the pouring rain for three hours that day—where were you?"...
