Her Own Light

"Judy, now and always, my wife is only you." The tenderness in his eyes made me believe him. Until I was three months pregnant, when I found a lipstick in his pocket. I held up the lipstick and asked, "This color suits Greta Rodriguez pretty well, doesn't it?" His face turned pale: "A client left this in my pocket. Don't think the worst." I didn't press him further. At seven months, when I was suffering severe pregnant sickness, he came home late, his collar stained with lipstick and smelling of perfume. "Robbie Madison," I leaned against the wall, my stomach twisting, "you smell like Greta Rodriguez." He irritably loosened his tie. "Judy Fox, how long are you going to keep suspecting me? I'm exhausted!"收起

Chapter 1 of "Her Own Light"

My name is Judy Fox. Robbie Madison is my husband. Before I married Robbie Madison, I already knew about Greta Rodriguez. Greta Rodriguez had been the one Robbie had cherished in his heart for many years. It's not that I didn't mind; it's just that back then, I always believed love could conquer past attachments. My acquaintance with Robbie Madison was hardly romantic, yet it held my first feelings of pity and a fluttering heart for him. I was seventeen that year, and on my way home from school, I came across a group of boys surrounding Robbie. They tugged at his school uniform, faded from too many washes, insulting him as a b*stard without parents. Robbie kept his head down, fists tightly clenched, but never once fought back. I don't know where I found the courage, but I picked up a stone from the roadside, threw it, and shouted at them that I was calling the police. Seeing I was serious, the group cursed under their breath and finally left. I walked over to Robbie Madison and handed him a tissue. He lifted his head, his face bruised, his eyes as cold as ice, without saying a single thank you. Later, I found out that Robbie Madison had grown up in an orphanage, where bullying was a daily ordeal. I started paying attention to him, bringing him breakfast and helping him catch up on the lessons he'd missed. At first, he resisted and kept his distance from me. Then, six months later, he walked me home in the rain, drenched, yet smiled and said he was afraid I'd catch a cold. From that day on, our relationship slowly grew closer. Robbie Madison said I was the first person who treated him well and never looked down on his background. I believed that this unique kindness would help him completely let go of his past. After graduating from university, Robbie Madison proposed to me. He knelt on one knee, holding a modest ring, his eyes sincere. He promised to treat me well for life and give me a stable home. I nodded with tears in my eyes, overlooking the fleeting haze in his gaze. Our wedding was simple, with few guests, but every corner bore the marks of my careful planning. The days after marriage were ordinary, yet somehow tender. Robbie Madison worked hard, and when he came home, he helped me with the housework. I thought we would just keep going like this forever. Until I discovered I was pregnant. When I showed Robbie Madison the pregnancy test, his face lit up with surprise, but beneath it lay a flicker of worry I couldn't decipher. From that moment on, Robbie began to change. He often came home late, sometimes carrying a scent that wasn't mine. When I questioned him, he said it was just socializing and told me not to read too much into it. I comforted myself, telling myself it was just pregnancy hormones and I shouldn't suspect him. But once suspicion takes root, it grows uncontrollably. That day, I was overcome with pregnancy nausea and wanted Robbie Madison to accompany me to the hospital. I called him, but he said he was busy, his tone dismissive. Compelled by some strange impulse, I went to the address a friend had given me. It was a small apartment, with a pair of women's high heels placed by the door. I pushed the door open and saw the scene I least wanted to see. Robbie Madison and Greta Rodriguez were entwined on the sofa; Greta's hand rested on his chest, her smile gentle and tender. When they saw me, the smiles on their faces froze instantly. I stood at the door, my body chilled, even breathing felt difficult. Robbie Madison hurriedly stood up, trying to come to my side. I raised my hand to stop him—not crying or making a fuss, just quietly looking at him. Greta Rodriguez also stood, her eyes filled with provocation and a faint, barely noticeable smirk. "Judy Fox." Greta was the first to speak, her tone deliberately intimate. I ignored her, my gaze fixed solely on Robbie Madison. Robbie Madison's face flushed bright red, his eyes averted, unable to utter a single word of explanation. I turned and left the apartment without looking back. The wind outside was fierce, making my whole body shiver. I didn't know how long I had walked until my legs gave out, and I stopped, leaning against a tree. Tears finally spilled uncontrollably, dropping onto the cold ground. The deep love I believed in was nothing but a lie. The sense of security I thought I had was nothing but an illusion.

"The girl your husband was holding is named Ingrid." My friend slammed the secretly taken photo down in front of me, her voice full of outrage. In the photo, Stanley's gaze was so tender it was painfully bright—a look I had never received, even when our daughter was critically ill. I lifted my wine glass and swirled the amber liquid inside. "I know." I tugged at the corner of my mouth. "You know? Then you..." "Ingrid," I interrupted her, staring at that face in the photo—eerily resembling someone deceased—"was the one I picked out two years ago." My friend let out a sharp gasp. I dialed the number, and a girl's sweet yet slightly nervous voice answered, "Mrs. Stanley." "Did he take the bait?" I asked.

A mobile payment alert pops up. The thermos bucket in my hand clatters to the floor. "Bruce! Where did you transfer Noah's surgery fee?" I rush into the study, my voice trembling. He holds a cigarette between his fingers, scrolling through his phone. "Gave it to Stacy. Her commission for that deal." "That's money for his life!" I grab the collar of his shirt. "The doctor said Noah has to have the surgery next week!" Bruce shoves me away, his tone dripping with contempt. "We can scrape up more money later. If Stacy leaves, the company will collapse. What's the hurry with Noah?" "He's your son!" I scream and lunge at him, but he slams me against the wall. The door swings open, and Stacy walks in. "Susan, don't get so worked up. Mr. Bruce knows what he's doing." I glare at the two of them. "Bruce, if you dare touch this money, I swear I'll make you lose everything...

The Scented Maiden

The golden threads along the hem of the wedding dress still shimmered under the warm yellow light; the cedar scent on Felix Lewis' shirt—the cologne I had specially blended for him—had yet to dissipate, when a pair of rust-scented hands clamped over my mouth. A moment before the black cloth was drawn over my eyes, I saw in the mirror the wedding dress like a coagulated pool of blood, and the sickly sweet stench of inferior perfume piercing my nostrils—later, this became the trigger of my nightmare. When I awoke again, the damp chill of the warehouse seeped into the wedding dress, and the hospital's voice burst from my mobile phone: 'Ms. Scott, your father is undergoing emergency treatment for a myocardial infarction in the ICU!' Mother grasped me, trembling with sobs: "It was the Lewis family... They are the ones who harmed your father!" Clutching the blood bead in my palm, I finally discerned the malicious eyes of Lisa...

I caught my husband Howard James locked in a kiss with his childhood friend Willow Charles on the couch. He snapped away suddenly and rushed over, "Selena, don't get the wrong idea! Willow fainted so I gave her CPR!" Willow Charles stood by, clutching her chest, eyes wide and scared. I laughed bitterly, "CPR? Does it really take this long?" But that ridiculous scene was only the beginning. At the hospital, just as the doctor came out, Howard James hurried up, "How's my baby?" "My baby"—those two words hit me like a thunderclap. Last winter, he signed the abortion consent form himself, ending our baby's life. I slapped him hard across the face, the crack sharp and clear. He covered his face and yelled, "Are you crazy?" I stared at him, tears burning in my eyes. "When I was pregnant, you said you didn't want to be a father. Now she's pregnant, and suddenly you do?"收起
