Chapter 1 of "The Lazier, The Luckier"

My name's Moira Yip, and I'm a sales rep at a company. I barely took any days off this month. Every day, I'm out the door before dawn to meet clients. I still have to sort through contracts and documents after getting home at night. The client's demands keep changing constantly. I revised the proposals over and over, staying up for countless nights. Sometimes the client calls last-minute meetings, and I rush over without even having time to eat. My colleagues say I'm pushing myself too hard and tell me to take it easy. But I know this multi-million deal is super important to me. It's not just about a hefty bonus, but also a promotion. Finally, some good news came today. The client signed the contract—I landed the multi-million deal. Holding the contract, my hands were shaking. It felt like all the hard work was finally paying off right at this moment. I couldn't contain my excitement and wanted to share it with my boyfriend, Cameron Roger, right away. I bought his favorite grilled skewers and beer, then hurried home. I was already planning to surprise him big time later. I slipped the key into the lock and gently turned it. The door opened; the living room lights were off, and strange noises were coming from the bedroom. My heart sank, and a bad feeling started creeping in. I stepped lightly and slowly walked toward the bedroom. The bedroom door was slightly open, and I could see inside. Cameron Roger and the company's finance officer, Genevieve Guthrie, were embracing closely. My mind instantly went completely blank. The skewers and beer in my hands dropped to the floor, making a sharp clinking sound. They heard the noise, abruptly broke apart, and turned to look at me. There wasn't a trace of guilt on Cameron's face, only a hint of impatience. Genevieve anxiously straightened her clothes, avoiding my gaze. I pointed at them, my voice shaking with anger and shock. "What are you... what are you two doing?" Cameron frowned, walked over to me, and spoke casually. "Moira, don't make such a big deal out of this." "What do you mean by 'big deal'?" I almost shouted, "We're a couple, and you're here with her..." "So what if we're a couple?" Cameron cut me off, "You're always working and never have time for me." "Isn't all this work for our future together?" Tearing up, I said, "I just closed a multi-million deal today. I wanted to share the good news with you, and yet you..." When it came to the multi-million deal, there wasn't a trace of joy in Cameron Roger's eyes—only pure disdain. "It's just a deal. What's there to be so proud of?" "A deal?" I couldn't believe my ears. "Do you have any idea how much I've struggled for this deal?" "Still just luck." Cameron sneered, "Without the company's platform, do you really think you could have landed this deal? Don't act like you're all that." His words pierced my heart like sharp knives. All my hard work meant absolutely nothing in his eyes. Looking at this familiar yet unfamiliar person in front of me, my heart shattered. The huge blow left me weak, and my vision started to fade. I wanted to say something else, but no sound came out. Then, everything went black, and I lost consciousness, collapsing to the ground.

"Larry Fraser, are you out of your mind?" Her voice shook, "You're just a waste who got out of a psychiatric hospital. How dare you make demands of me?" I leaned close to her ear, my voice barely above a whisper: "Three years ago, when you tampered with my parents' brakes, did you ever imagine this day would come?" Her pupils constricted sharply. "You... you have no proof!" I chuckled softly, my fingertips tracing the baby's cheek resting in her arms. "Proof? Tell me why Owen Locke agreed to help me get the signed agreement from you." Nova Jackson's face instantly drained of color, pale as paper. "What did you do to him?!" "What exactly do you want?" I leaned close to her ear, speaking each word deliberately: "Everything you've done to me, I'll repay a hundredfold. The game has only just begun, darling." Her breathing was ragged, and the baby in her arms suddenly burst into tears. "Aren't you...

The acrid smell of rust choked the warehouse as the scar-faced man jabbed an iron rod at Alex and me. "Call Mason—five million, or you die!" My knuckles whitened around my phone, my back throbbing from the blow I'd just taken. "I want to hear my dad's voice!" "Cut the crap!" He lashed out at Alex, but I threw myself in the way. "So you're Mason's kid, huh? Real protective of your brother." The call connected, and Mason's voice crackled through, sharp with irritation. "What is it this time?" The scar-faced brute snatched the phone and roared into it. "I've got your kids! Meet me at the old docks tomorrow—and don't even think about calling the cops, or you'll be picking up their bodies!" "Don't hurt them! I'll get the money!" Panic edged into Mason's tone. He hung up, then his phone rang again. When he answered, his voice turned sickeningly obsequious. "Don't you worry, Ms. Lopez—everything's going exactly as...

"Ralph Johnson, who are you holding?" He drunkenly buried his face in Lara Stafford's neck: "My wife." My fingers went cold. "Look carefully—I'm your wife, Monica Franco." He looked up, eyes cold and mocking. "Monica? What are you doing here?" Dead silence fell around us. My best friend, my husband, tore my life to shreds right in front of me. Lara Stafford went pale, trying to explain, but I cut her off: "We've known each other for ten years, and this is how you repay me?" She suddenly looked up, eyes sharp with venom: "You're always so high and mighty! I've had enough!" I glared at the cheating couple and pulled out my phone to play the video of them kissing. Ralph Johnson furiously slammed the phone down: "You were spying on me?" "What else? Just gonna sit back and let you two chew me up until there's nothing left?"收起

Awards happen every year, but the opening of Quinn's coffee shop only happens once." The call was cut off. I opened my phone—he'd posted a video three minutes ago, playing the guitar, with Quinn Furr leaning on his shoulder. The caption read: "Always here to support my girl Quinn. At the very moment my mother-in-law breathed her last, it felt as if a syringe filled with icy insulin had been plunged into my chest, the cold arresting my heart instantly. Clutching the empty medicine bottle, I overheard my husband in the corridor telling the doctor, "Five hundred thousand; hurry up and remove the body." The old man at the morgue handed me the ashes in the wrong box, then chuckled awkwardly, "It's mixed up, just make do." The Final Curtain

The pagoda tree flowers at the alley entrance had fallen. I squatted down, wanting to pick them up, when Chris crushed them under his foot. "Childish," he said. "Mind your own business?" I stuffed the petals into my schoolbag, yet he silently followed behind me. Who would have thought that this person, who had argued with me ever since we were kids, would turn 18, his ears flushed red, and say, "My mom asked if you'd be willing to get engaged." After we got married, the tomato noodles he'd cooked were still warm when I came home with a braised pork knuckle. But I heard Whitney's voice: "Chris, when are you going to tell her the truth?" When Chris saw me, all he said was, "Let's get a divorce." I ran out of the house and got hit by a car. When I opened my eyes again, he was sitting by the hospital bed. "The doctor said you might have...

The diagnosis paper trembles in my hand. "Late-stage stomach cancer" those three words stab like an ice pick into my eyes. With trembling hands, I called Caleb Elliott. My voice was hoarse, unlike myself: "Caleb, I need money. I need treatment immediately..." "Funds are tied up right now. Just wait." I didn't call again; I went straight to the company. Pushing open the door to the finance office, my voice was weak: "I need to withdraw a sum of money. It's urgent." The finance director looked up at me, her gaze evasive. "Mrs. Woods... Mr. Elliott just withdrew a considerable amount in your name. He said it was your instruction." I caught my breath. "How much?" She gave me a figure. It was exactly the cost of my first treatment phase.收起
