He lied to me, saying I was infertile, but secretly had children with his mistress. I decisively divorced him and bought a motorhome to travel, but he followed me, begging for a reconciliation. Chapter 1 of "The Forty-Year Lie"

My name is Sophie White. When I was twenty, I was still in the village, farming alongside my parents. There was a girl in the village named Marty Bunch—beautiful and always surrounded by a crowd of admirers. I'm straightforward by nature. Once, I saw Marty deliberately driving Cara's chickens into the ditch, and I couldn't help but say a few words to her. Those few words were what got me into trouble. That evening, I was walking home after buying some things in town. As I passed the cornfield at the east end of the village, three men suddenly rushed out. They were Marty's admirers, saying they were there to teach me a lesson on her behalf. I was so scared I wanted to run, but there were too many of them, and they quickly dragged me into the cornfield. The corn leaves scraped painfully against my face, and I screamed for help with all my might, but no one heard me. Just when I thought I was done for, a figure rushed in. It was Marcel Chandler. Marcel was two years older than me, usually quiet and always working silently in the fields. He grabbed a wooden stick and swung it at the three men. The three men never expected anyone to come to my rescue and were momentarily stunned. Marcel was relentless, and before long, he had beaten those three men until their faces were bruised and swollen, forcing them to flee. I collapsed to the ground, trembling all over. Marcel crouched down and handed me a clean handkerchief. He said nothing, silently staying by my side until I regained my composure. But just a few days later, the police arrived. Those three men were seriously injured and reported Marcel to the police. Marcel was sentenced to three years in prison for intentional injury. I visited him at the detention center; he smiled at me through the glass and told me to wait for him. I nodded through my tears, promising that I would wait. During those three years, I waited every day for Marcel to come out. I helped his parents with their work and took care of the household for him. Finally, after three years, Marcel Chandler was released. He was thinner than before, but his eyes were more determined. He came to me and said he couldn't stay in the village any longer; he wanted to take me south to build a new life. Without hesitation, I packed a simple bag and went with him. The southern city was vast and unfamiliar. At first, we had little money and lived in a cramped rental house. Marcel found work at a construction site, leaving early each day and coming home late, exhausted enough to fall asleep right away. I stayed at home, washing clothes and cooking, and occasionally took odd jobs at a nearby small factory. Life was tough, but as long as I was with Marcel Chandler, I held onto hope. Marcel was capable and intelligent. He worked his way up from a laborer to a foreman at the construction site, and later began taking on small contracting projects himself. Over the years, our life gradually improved. Eventually, Marcel started his own company, and the business kept growing. We moved from a rental house to a spacious home and even bought a car. Marcel Chandler became the "Mr. Chandler" everyone talked about, a renowned new elite in this city. And I became his wife. On our wedding day, there was no grand ceremony—just a handful of close friends. Marcel held my hand and promised he would care for me for a lifetime. I cried then, feeling as if all my hardships had finally come to an end. That hand in mine lasted for forty years.
