Eyes of the Deep

The day my mother slipped into a coma again, I ran through the hospital corridors in my patient gown, heading straight for Uriel Chandler's office. As I climbed the stairs, my foot suddenly slipped—the scattered walnuts looked like a carefully laid trap. I fell, struck the ground, and a sharp pain exploded from my lower abdomen. Before losing consciousness as they lifted me onto the stretcher, I heard Uriel Chandler talking on the phone just around the corner. His voice was low, carrying a cold patience I had never heard before: "Don't worry, the switch in her mother's medication was done so covertly no one will detect it." "These walnuts will just cause her to lose the baby." On the other end of the phone, a syrupy voice purred, "Uriel, you're so good..." When I woke up again, Uriel Chandler was sitting by my bed, his right hand wrapped in thick gauze stained with blood. "Eileen, I'm sorry..." His voice was hoarse, eyes rimmed with red. "I've already punished myself. The child... we can have another child." At that moment, Mia Charles came in carrying chicken soup. "Eileen, I made you some soup to help you regain your strength." I looked at them—one with his hand wrapped in deceptive gauze, the other wearing a fake, considerate smile. Those cold words from the phone just now collided violently with these two concerned faces before me, clashing in my mind. "F*ck off!" My voice was soft, yet it plunged the ward into sudden, breathless silence.收起

Chapter 1 of "Eyes of the Deep"

The monitor's beeping suddenly sped up. The nurse burst into the ward as I was gently rubbing my belly, where a three-month-old life was growing. "Ms. Downey, your mother's heart rate has suddenly dropped — she's being resuscitated!" My blood froze instantly. I grabbed my coat and bolted for the door. Uriel Chandler's office was in the building across from the inpatient ward; he was the only one supporting Mom's medical expenses. I ran in my high heels, silently begging that nothing go wrong. At the corner of the stairs, a few smooth walnuts rolled across the floor. I didn't have time to react; my foot slipped, and I fell down the stairs. A sharp, ripping pain burst through my abdomen, and warm liquid soaked my skirt. My vision blurred as I was lifted onto a stretcher, familiar voices drifting into my ears. It was Uriel's phone ringing, carrying a kind of indulgence I had never heard before. "Mia, don't worry—the medicine was switched very subtly. The doctors won't catch it." "I purposely left the walnut in the stairwell. She's pregnant and can't run fast—one fall will do just fine." "That child was never meant to exist; it stands in the way of us being together." Mia's voice was sweet and delicate: "Uriel, you're so good to me. Once her mother never wakes up again, we can be together openly." "Don't worry; she won't last long." Darkness swallowed me whole. Waking up again, the hospital ward was thick with the scent of disinfectant and sorrow. My lower abdomen was flat—the child was gone. Uriel sat beside the bed, his right hand wrapped in thick gauze, eyes full of guilt. "Eileen, I'm sorry. I didn't take care of you properly. I've already punished myself." He raised his injured hand; dark red blood seeped through the bandages. I looked at that hand, recalling the conversation before I lost consciousness, a wave of nausea churning in my stomach. It was all just a play he wrote and performed himself. The door creaked open, and Mia Charles came in carrying a bowl of soup, wearing the same dress Uriel had bought for me. "Ms. Downey, I heard you had a miscarriage, so I made some nourishing soup especially for you." She smiled with a false sweetness. "F*ck off." My voice was hoarse. "Why are you so harsh?" Mia looked up at Uriel with a hurt expression. "I was only trying to help." Uriel frowned. "Eileen, Mia cares about you. Don't be so unreasonable." Watching them play along, my pent-up rage exploded all at once. I raised my hand, and a sharp slap struck Mia's face. With a sharp "smack," the hospital ward plunged into a deadly silence. Mia covered her face, crying, "Uriel, look at her!" Uriel suddenly stood up and shoved me aside. "Eileen! You've gone too far! Mia is innocent!" I staggered backward and collided with the edge of the bed. My heart was completely dead. "Uriel, let's get a divorce." I said each word slowly and clearly.

Pushing open that slightly ajar door, all my sweet illusions froze in an instant. "Rose, once our children are born, we'll have both a son and a daughter—no more regrets." It was his voice. Through the crack of the door, I saw him half-kneeling, holding his brother's wife's pregnant belly with his hands. I leaned against the cold wall, barely keeping myself from collapsing. The snow slammed into my face like a slap. The homeless man grabbed my chin, the sour stench hitting me head-on. I dragged my broken leg, crawling through the snow leaving a trail of blood, and knocked on the door that used to be mine. The one who opened it was my former mother; she recoiled as if seeing filth. "Why are you here again?" "Mom... save me..." Jill Fletcher approached, her gaze as cold as ice. I clung to the last shred of hope: "Jill, I'm being bullied..." "Don't call me Jill." The CEO's Broken Promises

Fireworks still bloomed across the city night sky. I leaned in Louis's arms, staring at our wedding photos looping on the screen, yet not a trace of warmth reached my fingertips. He bent down to kiss my forehead, his voice gentle enough to drown in: "Nancy, having you and Andy makes my life complete." This marriage admired by all was nothing but sugar-coated poison from the very start. That stormy night, I overheard a conversation between Louis and Vivian by chance. "Louis, are you really going to keep hiding this from her forever?" Vivian's voice trembled with unease. Louis let out a cold laugh, his tone sharp and icy: "What else? She's merely a pawn sent by the Shawn family." "Only Andy is the true heir to our family—this secret must never get out." "But what if... what if she finds out?" "Finds out?" A ruthless glint flashed in Louis's eyes. "Then we'll shut up her up forever."收起

Everyone thinks I'm greedy, including Ricky Wilson. "Giselle Franco, you really are a shameless b*tch." Until our wedding anniversary, when I couldn't pay the infusion fee at the hospital, while the television broadcasted live the grand fireworks show he held for his lover. I sent him one last message: "Ricky Wilson, let's get a divorce." He replied quickly: "What tricks are you trying to play now? If you want money, just say so." At that moment, my heart died. I arranged a "death" for myself. A year later, under the small town's sunshine, he found me with red eyes, his voice trembling beyond recognition: "Giselle, I was wrong.
