A Mother's Vengeance

2026-03-04

The red light in the emergency room went out, and I had to prop myself up against the wall to stay on my feet, my mind fixated on nothing but that door. Dylan's car skidded to a stop, his suit reeking of perfume. "She's gone? I told you to keep an eye on her. All that effort, for nothing." I grabbed him by the collar and screamed, "That's your daughter! Where were you last night? Why didn't you answer the phone?" He shoved me away. "I was with Rachel and Leo for their birthday. Isn't having you enough for Alice?" "Leo?" My heart plummeted. "You were with your illegitimate son and didn't care if your own daughter lived or died?" Dylan let out a scornful laugh and tossed a business card at me. "Stop being unreasonable. The divorce papers will be sent over, and don't bother me with Alice's business." I clenched the card tight in my fist. "Dylan, you'll regret this." As he turned to leave, a flash of pink fuzz on his cuff caught my eye—it was from Alice's stuffed toy! "You saw Alice! Did you do this to her?" His steps faltered, but he didn't look back. "What nonsense are you talking about?"收起

Chapter 1 of "A Mother's Vengeance"

The torrential rain hammered my face, sharp and piercing like needles. I cradled Alice's lifeless body as I walked through the rain all through the night. Soaked to the skin, the cold gnawed deep into my bones, yet I dared not loosen my grip, fearing that if I did, she would truly be lost forever. When I pushed open the door, the hallway light blazed harshly. Dylan Lynn sat on the sofa, clad in a suit, not a single raindrop on him. He shot me a quick glance, his brow tightly furrowed. "Are you finished making a scene?" His voice was as cold as the rain outside, "Parading about with a corpse—don't you find that shameful?" My throat tightened, and no sound came out; I could only fix my gaze on him. This is our daughter, his own flesh and blood—little Alice, only three years old. How could he speak so callously about her? "Speak," Dylan Lynn stood up impatiently and kicked the nearby coffee table. The glass shattered across the floor, shards scattering everywhere. "Because you're useless, failed to take care of the child, and now you want to use her to blackmail me?" "Blackmail?" I finally forced out a voice, hoarse and scarcely my own. "Dylan, that is Alice." "I know it was her." With a face as cold as stone, he tossed a document from his briefcase onto the table, "The divorce agreement—I've already signed it." I froze, staring at the harsh divorce agreement, my heart gripped fiercely as if by a cruel hand. "Why?" I asked. "Why?" Dylan Lynn sneered, his eyes brimming with scorn, "Because you can't even care for a child, and you've stood in the way between me and Rachel and Leo." Rachel was his nanny, and Leo was their illegitimate child. I had heard the rumors for a long time but refused to believe them. "Alice is gone, and you're not thinking about how to send her off one last time—you only care about divorce?" My voice trembled, not from fear, but from heartbreak. "Then what? Keep someone as unlucky as you in this house?" Dylan Lynn stepped closer, his voice threatening. "Sign the papers, and I'll give you some money. Don't sign, and you get nothing." I looked at him, suddenly feeling this man before me was utterly unfamiliar. "And," he added, his gaze icy, "kneel and apologize to Rachel and Leo." "Apologize?" I retorted, a faint, bitter smile tugging at the corner of my lips, "Why should I apologize?" "Because you have occupied Mrs. Lynn's place for so long, causing Rachel and her son to suffer." Dylan Lynn's tone brooked no argument: "Either you kneel and apologize by signing, or you walk away empty-handed. I won't have anything to do with Alice's funeral arrangements." He wielded his power with precision, knowing that Alice was what I cared for most. I did not argue. I stooped to retrieve the divorce agreement from the floor, took up the pen, and signed my name—Laura Scott—in the column for Party B. My handwriting was faint, but it drained every ounce of my strength. "The inscription is finished." I handed him the agreement. "I want to take Alice for cremation. I will keep her ashes." Dylan Lynn took the agreement, scanned it briefly, and nodded approvingly. "Do as you please." He waved his hand, as if shooing away flies. "Hurry up and take her away. Don't stain my place." I cradled Alice in my arms and turned to leave the place I once called "home." The rain outside had not ceased, but the storm within me seemed to have finally passed.

You want the three kids, you cling to the family fortune—this life is the only thing I still have a say over." "I never said I wouldn't let you go. Leave the kids behind!" His voice was both furious and flustered. "Leave them to be at Cindy's mercy? When you forced me to stay with the kids under the pretense of being a nanny, did you ever think this day would come?" "It was to protect you all!" He roared, "Cindy won't let you off the hook—come back with me!" "Protect?" I laughed until tears came, "Your so-called protection is making me watch the kids call someone else mom, watch myself be humiliated in public?" He was lost for words, suddenly clamping his hands on my shoulders: "I'll...

"Kate, do you think this wedding gown looks good on me?" Sylvia Bertrand's voice was as sweet as honey, yet laced with poison. "Theodore picked it out himself." She leaned down, her fingertips pressing into my chin, "He said he wanted me to be the happiest bride." "Guess," she chuckled softly, "when the fireworks go off at the wedding later, do you think he'll remember you?" Suddenly, footsteps sounded outside the door. A familiar voice pierced the door panel: "Sylvia?" My blood froze in an instant. Sylvia Bertrand suddenly clamped her hand over my mouth, her nails digging into my festering flesh. She sweetly coquetted to the door outside, "Coming right away, darling——" Then, close to my ear, she spoke deliberately, "If you dare make a sound, I'll drag him down to hell with you." I stared at the faint light slipping through the vent, hearing the sound of my heart breaking. The voice of Theodore Fraser faded away: "Did...

Do you plan to renew it?" "Oh, not at all." Owen said coldly. Ms. Vivian immediately leaned in, the pride in her eyes impossible to hide: "Owen has long wanted to break free from this relationship. Why are you still clinging to him and refusing to let go?" I took out the copy of the contract from my handbag: "It's clearly written in the contract — I can leave anytime I want." "Owen, you just had a scandal with her yesterday, and then you immediately asked me to pay her a million to hush it up."
